Book Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology

Download or read book Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology written by Nancy Thomson de Grummond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 1357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 1,125 entries and 170 contributors, this is the first encyclopedia on the history of classical archaeology. It focuses on Greek and Roman material, but also covers the prehistoric and semi-historical cultures of the Bronze Age Aegean, the Etruscans, and manifestations of Greek and Roman culture in Europe and Asia Minor. The Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology includes entries on individuals whose activities influenced the knowledge of sites and monuments in their own time; articles on famous monuments and sites as seen, changed, and interpreted through time; and entries on major works of art excavated from the Renaissance to the present day as well as works known in the Middle Ages. As the definitive source on a comparatively new discipline - the history of archaeology - these finely illustrated volumes will be useful to students and scholars in archaeology, the classics, history, topography, and art and architectural history.

Book Antiquities Acquired

Download or read book Antiquities Acquired written by Catherine Philippa Bracken and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extraordinary, often shocking, story of how Greece was despoiled of much of her treasures in the early nineteenth century -- The treasures that are now priceless exhibits in the great museums of the world. Lord Elgin acquired the famous marbles that bear his name, but he was not the only one to take part in a kind of free-for-all, not so far removed from modern vandalism: many amateur and semi-professional collectors were at work, taking what they could get for paltry sums, bribes or nothing at all, blissfully blind to the havoc they wrecked... Miss Bracken has lived for long periods in Greece, visiting sites of its classical civilisation. Her interest in the spoliators was first aroused by the names carved with laborious care on many of the monuments; one example is the column at Delphi inscribed by Lords Aberdeen and Bryon. This is a book that will fill in the often colourful background to Greek treasures in museums and Greece itself.

Book Cracking the Egyptian Code

Download or read book Cracking the Egyptian Code written by Andrew Robinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1799 Napoleon's army uncovered an ancient stele in the Nile delta. Its inscription, recorded in three distinct scripts--ancient Greek, Coptic, and hieroglyphic--would provide scholars with the first clues to unlocking the secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphs, a language lost for nearly two millennia. More than twenty years later a remarkably gifted Frenchman named Jean-Francois Champollion successfully deciphered the hieroglyphs on the stele, now commonly known as the Rosetta Stone, sparking a revolution in our knowledge of ancient Egypt. Cracking the Egyptian Code is the first biography in English of Champollion, widely regarded as the founder of Egyptology. Andrew Robinson meticulously reconstructs how Champollion cracked the code of the hieroglyphic script, describing how Champollion started with Egyptian obelisks in Rome and papyri in European collections, sailed the Nile for a year, studied the tombs in the Valley of the Kings (a name he first coined), and carefully compared the three scripts on the Rosetta Stone to penetrate the mystery of the hieroglyphic text. Robinson also brings to life the rivalry between Champollion and the English scientist Thomas Young, who claimed credit for launching the decipherment, which Champollion hotly denied. There is much more to Champollion's life than the Rosetta Stone and Robinson gives equal weight to the many roles he played in his tragically brief life, from a teenage professor in Revolutionary France to a supporter of Napoleon (whom he met), an exile, and a curator at the Louvre. Extensively illustrated in color and black-and-white pictures, Cracking the Egyptian Code will appeal to a wide readership interested in Egypt, decipherment and code-breaking, and Napoleon and the French Revolution.
