Book Giotto the Painter Volume 2 Works

Download or read book Giotto the Painter Volume 2 Works written by Michael Viktor Schwarz and published by Böhlau Wien. This book was released on 2023-04-17 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paintings examined and contextualised in this volume are those secured for Giotto through early written sources. These sources also help to reconstruct the sequence of his works and artistic inventions as is plausible in the context of media culture in the decades around and after 1300: while Giotto was spiritually and intellectually formed in the sphere of the Florentine Dominicans, his artistic path began in Rome in the shadow of the Curia. The breakthrough to his own artistic concept came immediately before and during his work in Padua. In addition to prominent churchmen, ecclesiastical institutions, and the King of Naples, his clients were predominantly members of Italy's urban and financial elites. The adoption and further development of his inventions by other - especially Sienese - painters pressured him in his later years to try new approaches again.

  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 332 pages

Download or read book The Vatican Museums written by Carlo Pietrangeli and published by Edizioni Quasar Di Severino Tognon. This book was released on 1993 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great museum is not only a collection of works of art or artefacts of various interest and various importance: it is also a living organism which has its own history to tell. And if the museum is of ancient origin, this can be of great fascination in itself. It is enough to think of a collections formation; of its progressive development which, over the centuries, takes account of, and is shaped by, the cultural interests of the time. Or of the acquisition, sometimes fortuitous, of the various works. Or of the changing tastes reflected in their display, and the various methods used in their restoration; or of the political developments or doctrinal implications in which the museum may find itself involved. The Vatican Museums, whose origins go back to the early 16th century, exemplify all these concerns in a particularly comprehensive and fascinating way. Their initial formation, almost in the character of a private collection; their threatened dispersal in the Counter-Reformation; their recovery under the impetus of the intellectual revival in the 18th century; their development, also in defence of the artistic patrimony of the State threatened by exports, at the end of the same century; their subsequent enlargement up to more recent times, thanks to the distinguished patronage of the various Popes; and lastly their incorporation, at times exemplary, in the context of the Vatican Palaces, first with Simonettis Museo Pio-Clementino, then with Sterns Braccio Nuovo and more recently with Beltramis Pinacoteca and Passarellis Museo Paolino: all this constitutes not only a field of study, comparison, and reflection, but also at times an example which others have followed. The present book, ideally, would have required a far more extensive archival documentation than the author has been able to consult. It is to be hoped that the systematic exploration of the huge, but very scattered, archival sources available may make it possible in future to update, or to amplify, those parts of the book that were unable to benefit from this irreplaceable support. It may be claimed, nonetheless, that it has proved possible to reconstruct the history of the Vatican Museums in sufficient detail, and that this book may prove useful at a time when the history of collecting is arousing increasing interest. Book excerpt: After the Roman empire fell, medieval Europe continued to be fascinated by Rome itself, 'the Chief of Cities', once the centre of the empire, including its history, its buildings, and above all its early Christian martyrs, and the papacy, central to the western Latin church. This book explores ways in which the city itself was preserved, envisioned, and transformed not only by its residents, but also by the many pilgrims who flocked to Rome, and by northern European cultures (in particular, the Irish and English) who imagined and imitated the city as they understood it.

Book The Classical Tradition in Czech Medieval Art

Download or read book The Classical Tradition in Czech Medieval Art written by Jan Bažant and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2003 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Jan Bazant analyses the tradition of ancient Greece and Rome in the art of Bohemia from the 10th to the 14th century. Bohemia is of great interest in this respect because it was never part of the Roman Empire and there was, consequently, no Roman tradition per se. The Classical Tradition in Czech Medieval Art is a scholarly book, the first monographic treatment on this subject: but it is not intended exclusively for art historians. Its unique appeal for the general reader is that it deals with current topical problems of the growth of culture and the relation between art, economics, politics and religion.
