Of all forms of apparatus, the simplest and best for ninety and nine amateurs out of a hundred is the ordinary to and fro so-called light ning carrier, some of the most up-to-date forms of which have ebonite shutters for obscuring the picture at the actual moment of change, and all sorts of little fakes to avoid fingering and to facilitate the removal of the exhibited slides. What ever form of carrier be employed, I strongly recom mend that it should be firmly wedged, or, better still, screwed into position, as nothing is more annoying to an exhibitor than to find his pictures wobbling all over the screen as a result of careless ness in this respect. When we make our print from this, the tones are reversed again, this second reversal bringing them right. Such a print is a positive. We examine a print by reflected light, that is, the light falls on to the surface of the print and is thrown back or bent back. But if we make a print on glass, using for the purpose a dry plate, we still have a positive, but one which we must examine by looking through instead of at. Such a positive, because we can see through it, is often called a transparency. We examine it by transmitted light. Transparency, then, is a generic term for a positive picture on glass, or celluloid, or other transparent support. The support may even be of ground or opal glass, or the emulsion may have something added to it to give an opalescent or ground-glass effect, in which case it ceases to be transparent in the strict sense of the word, and is merely translucent, but it is still termed a transparency. Sometimes the expression "glass-positive" is used. Such transparencies have various uses. They may be employed for window decoration, for lamp shades, for advertising purposes, and so on.
