Book excerpt: Company I of the 16th Louisiana Infantry was originally referred to as"The Castor Guards" from Bienville Parish, Louisiana. They were also referred to as Mabry's and Houston's after their commanders as the war progressed. They were one of several Confederate militia groups formed at Bienville at the beginning of the Civil War. The Castor Guards assembled on 1 September 1861 at the Castor Church (now the site of the Old Castor Cemetery), and rode to Camp Moore, Louisiana. As in every small community across the south, the men who formed these units were brothers, cousins and neighbors. They knew each other most, if not all of their lives. And they were now gathering to take off to the war front together. Bidding farewell to their families, the soldiers left for Camp Moore, just north of Tangipahoa, Lousiana for training. When they arrived, they were assigned as Company I of the 16th Louisiana Infantry. The 16th Regiment was officially organized on September 29, 1861, at Camp Moore. Besides the men from Bienville, it contained men from Avoyelles, East Feliciana, Caddo, Livingston, Rapides, St. Landry, and St. Helena parishes of Louisiana. There were originally a total of 851 soldiers in the regiment, including the Castor Guards. Apparently, the regiment added soldiers through recruitment as they traveled, and consolidated with other units. The regiment spent the winter at training camp in Louisiana. During the Civil War, troops could only move easily in dry months, so very few battles took place in the middle of winter. This book outlines with illustrations the four years of war that this Bienville Parish group underwent. It also contains a roster and service record of its soldiers. The following men were in the Castor Guards Alexander, William E. Amason, John W. Ard, J. M, died at Shiloh Barker, Andrew J. Besant, Robert A. Blackman, J. H. Book Walking the Stones of Time

Download or read book Walking the Stones of Time written by Oswald Brown and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-09-27 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fantasy of time that might have been long before recorded history was written of people who existed and left their signs of being here, not only on the strange standing stones we pass daily without seeing them, but also in the customs and the way they lived. As they lived, we live, trying to avoid some of the same scourges of society, such as human trafficking and the enslavement of the unfortunates in our world. It is a love story of an awkward young man and an equally awkward young woman, who, despite their lack of social skills, forged a love that was stronger than all of their inadequacies. A love that was immediate, romantic, and compelling, even overcoming the torture of her soul. It is a story of treachery overcome by the most unlikely means by the resolve, courage, and fidelity of one man and twenty young women, the team, against overwhelming odds. Indeed, it is the story of the perfidy of men and the fidelity of women. Today in our own time, we learn almost every day of young girls being kidnapped to satisfy the appetites of the human traffickers of our modern world, sold as slaves into the sex trade’s ferocious needs and appetites for younger and younger girls. Even now in our somewhat-enlightened world, organizations exist to prevent the sale of young six-year-old girls being sold to work in the sweatshops of some Eastern manufacturers so that unscrupulous merchants can enjoy greater profits. I cannot wield Rahana’s club. Is the pen mightier than the club? Perfidy or fidelity? That is the question this story is asking you.

Book excerpt: Residents of antebellum northwest Louisiana held strong pro-Union sentiments, and the Pierson family of Bienville Parish, Louisiana, were no exception, opposing secession in 1861. Yet once war began, the region contributed its full share of support to the southern army, and four of William H. Pierson's eight sons enlisted. Ranging from the early battles of the Trans-Mississippi to the epic battles of the Army of Northern Virginia, and from the brutal trenches of Vicksburg to provost guard duty in north Louisiana, this extensive collection of Civil War letters, written by three of the Pierson brothers, offers riveting glimpses of almost every variety of experience faced by Confederate soldiers. Prolific letter writers, the Piersons were educated, observant, and well placed to comment not only on the battles and campaigns of their regiments but also on their commanding officers, the effect of political activity on soldier morale, being taken captive, and, most of all, their entire family's understanding of and commitment to the Confederate cause.

Some tell the story that she was an innocent victim caught between two kings who wanted to possess her. Those stories are lies. I will tell you the true story of Helen of Troy. My name is Helena my story begins when my mother had taken ill and was lying on her death bed. Some of the elders and Physicians in my father’s court thought it may have been the pox that killed my mother, but I knew better. I knew it was witch craft that had taken my mother from me. My father would disappear for days to the temple of Athena to pray for my mother’s good health. My mother’s health continued to worsen as she became bed ridden and rail thin in a matter of months. The castle was overcast with despair; everyone knew that my mother was dying. Everyone except me, I still had hope that whatever witchcraft that had befallen my mother would soon be lifted.

Download or read book It can t happen here a novel written by Lewis, Sinclair and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here in Vermont the affair was not so picturesque as it might have been on the Western prairies. Oh, it had its points: there was a skit in which Medary Cole (grist mill & feed store) and Louis Rotenstern (custom tailoring—pressing & cleaning) announced that they were those historic Vermonters, Brigham Young and Joseph Smith, and with their jokes about imaginary plural wives they got in ever so many funny digs at the ladies present. But the occasion was essentially serious. All of America was serious now, after the seven years of depression since 1929. It was just long enough after the Great War of 1914-18 for the young people who had been born in 1917 to be ready to go to college... or to another war, almost any old war that might be handy.
