Book Caste and Gender in Contemporary India

Download or read book Caste and Gender in Contemporary India written by Supurna Banerjee and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intersectional aspects of caste and gender in India that contribute to the multiple marginalities and oppressions of lower castes, with particular reference to Dalits, Muslims and women. It moves beyond the conventional accounts of experiences of women in unequal social and political relationships to examine how caste as a system and ideology shapes hegemonic masculinity and feminization of work, and thus contributes to the violence against women. The volume looks at their everyday lived realities within and across diverse social and political contexts — families, education systems, labour, communities, political parties, power, social organisations, the politics of representation and the writing of the subaltern women. With a range of empirical work, it brings forth the complexities of identity politics and further analyses its limits in regional and historical frameworks. This book will be of interest to students, scholars and specialists in caste and gender studies, exclusion and discrimination studies, sociology and social anthropology, history and political science. It will also be useful to Dalit writers and people working in the development sector in India.

Book Gender Caste and Class in India

Download or read book Gender Caste and Class in India written by Neelima Yadav and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of the status of women depends on an understanding of gender relations in a specific context. Examining gender relations as power relations makes clear that these are sustained by the institutions within which gender relations occur. For women, absence of power results in the lack of access to and control over resources, a coercive gender division of labour, devaluation of their work, and a lack of control over their own labour, mobility as well as sexuality and fertility. Gender equality thus demands substantive transformation, a set of policies and conditions created by the state that facilitate the reallocation of resources, thereby increasing women s control over resources that confer power at individual, household, and societal levels.

Book The Grammar of Caste

Download or read book The Grammar of Caste written by Ashwini Deshpande and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the caste system disappearing? Are traditional hierarchies being replaced by competing equalities? Do globalization and liberalization automatically result in diminishing disparities? Are modern labour markets intrinsically meritocratic and efficient? Challenging the dominant discourse and demolishing various myths, this book provides answers to these and other critical questions on caste in its contemporary avatar. Linking the economics of caste with its politics, sociology, and history, this innovative book provides a stimulating assessment of continuities and changes in caste disparities over the last two decades. Deshpande uses rich empirical data to uncover how contemporary, formal, urban sector labour markets reflect a deep awareness of caste, religious, gender, and class cleavages. She convincingly argues that discrimination is neither a relic of the past nor is it confined to rural areas, but is very much a modern, formal sector phenomenon. This insightful book is an important step towards a multidisciplinary dialogue for understanding (and mitigating) inequalities based on birth and descent.

Download or read book Daughters of Independence written by Joanna Liddle and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joanna Liddle and Rama Joshi explore the connection in India between gender and caste, and gender and class. They ask whether the subordination of women has diminished as India moves from a caste to a class structure, and what effect colonization had on the status of women in India. Focusing on educated, professional women, the authors look at the particular experiences of 120 women they interviewed, and also interpret the larger patterns of social relations that emerge from the interviews. These sensitive stories are told with an eloquence that is often moving and inspiring. For thousands of years Indian women have had a cultural tradition of resisting male domination. At the same time, the control of female sexuality has always been central to social hierarchies in India. Women are constrained in both class and caste hierarchies, to help distinguish the men at the top of the hierarchy from men at the bottom, where women are less constrained. In class society the seclusion of women allowed men to have sexual control over women and to retain the property that was transferred in marriage. In contemporary India, professional women have had success entering the professions as the social groups to which they belong move increasingly to class rather than caste structures. But men continue to control the type of education they receive and the type of employment open to them, and to participate in the sexual harassment of women in the workplace. The concept that women are inferior to men--a concept that is not part of the Indian cultural heritage--is growing. In a sense, working professional women strengthen male control. The class structure is no more egalitarian than the caste structure, as oppression simply takes other forms.

Book Change and Mobility in Contemporary India

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies caste and community dynamics in India and offers a critical view of social mobility from below. Building on the theories of the eminent sociologist M N Srinivas, the essays in this volume reformulate the debate on caste as they document the changing inter-caste dynamics and caste-based violence in contemporary India. The volume showcases the new language of change in caste relations, articulated mostly from the perspective of the marginalised as experiences, differences, contestations, assertions and as citizenship rights. It focusses on the clash between traditional structures of inequality and the ideals of equality and justice in a liberal, democratic India. It also highlights the persistence of caste and endogamy and the interlocking nature of caste, gender and disability, struggles of ethnic groups and informal workers in the market economy, discrimination in the labour market and the dissolution of dissent in the public sphere. With contributions from leading scholars of social change and development in India and abroad, this volume will be useful for scholars and researchers of sociology, social anthropology, minority and subaltern studies, and development studies.

Download or read book Perpetuating Inequality written by Roberto Miguel Rodriguez and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Perpetuating Inequality" delves into the complex and often misunderstood world of the Indian caste system, exploring its historical roots, its endurance in modern society, and the profound impact it continues to have on social stratification and inequality in India. This comprehensive book offers a critical examination of one of the world's oldest forms of social hierarchy and its implications for contemporary Indian life. The book begins by tracing the origins of the caste system in ancient India, providing a historical context for its development and institutionalization over millennia. It explores how the system, initially perhaps more fluid and occupation-based, solidified into a rigid structure of social order, deeply intertwined with religious and cultural norms. Each chapter methodically dissects the various layers and complexities of the caste system, from the division of society into hierarchical groups based on birth to the subtler, but no less impactful, notions of purity and pollution. The narrative also sheds light on the intersection of caste with other social variables like gender and economic status, examining how these intersections further compound disparities and discrimination. A crucial component of "Perpetuating Inequality" is its exploration of the caste system's persistence in modern India. Despite legal abolition and efforts at social reform, the book reveals how caste continues to influence various aspects of life, including politics, education, employment, and marriage. It brings to the fore contemporary issues such as caste-based violence, affirmative action policies, and the emerging dialogue around caste in the diaspora. The book also amplifies the voices of those at the lowest rungs of the caste hierarchy - the Dalits (formerly known as "untouchables") - sharing their experiences of prejudice and resistance. It looks at the movements that have emerged to challenge caste oppression, profiling key figures who have fought for equality and social justice. Concluding with a discussion on the future of the caste system, "Perpetuating Inequality" contemplates the challenges and possibilities for a society striving to overcome deep-rooted social divisions. It is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the enduring complexities of caste and its pervasive influence on the fabric of Indian society.
