The first story has the reader with an ancient clan of hunter-gatherers tracking a beast on the east African savanna 100,000 years ago. The beast means meat and fat for food, blood for drink and hides for warmth. There will be bones and sinew to stiffen their hide-roofed huts against the ie age winds from the north. The last story has the reader on a modern-day crab boat, the "Aleutian Challenger", working well north of the Aleutian Chain off the west coast of Alaska. The all-woman crew must fight rolling, heavy seas, iced-over decks and crew injuries if they are to pull their remaining pots up from the sea floor 600 feet below. The valuable loads of crab in these pots means the difference between profit or deepening debt for the boat's owners and crew. By careful use of history the writer layers fiction and character onto the selected time and place that enfolds each story. In that way he illuminates the shape of human culture as it has evolved over the 100,000 years of his chronol;ogy.

The protagonist in each story is a young woman. Though young she is exceptionally mature and intelligent as she makes her way through the events and social interactions with historic figures and other fictional characters living and working in that story's time and place. The author does not claim to be a historian but does admit to a certain enthusiasm for learning and writing about the gritty details of those times and places that show the influence of particular individuals on the evolution of what we now think of as western culture since Homo Sapiens first descended from the trees onto the limitless horizons of the grassy savanna. So, the historical facts offered in each of the stories has been intensively researched and cross-checked with the research help of a professional editor and several volunteer readers. The author is new to fiction writing and - also with the story-telling help of his very capable professional editor - his personal style is still evolving. For these 10 stories the author hopes his style comes across to the reader as "Hemingwayesque." Someday the author hopes to write as Hemingway did when he described a "clean well-lighted place." The language in the stories is mature and some is a little off-color. Among the 10 stories there are a couple of incidents that could be considered either violent or sexually provocative enough that some parental guidance may be advised for youthful readers. If these stories were a movie a rating of PG-13 may be appropriate.
