The Genitive Many of the genitives indicate possession, yet many are construed with verbs or verbal derivatives, more commonly the latter. These, with the descriptive and the partitive genitives, form the larger part of those not indicating possession. Equivalent constructions are also found, but no attempt will be made here to point them out, as it is possible to lose sight of the genitive amid the variations and equivalents. Different readings also might cut some figure in the presentation, but in a matter where certainty is impossible, excepting in a few instances, we have not sought to be wise above what is written in the Weissen born-mueller edition. The Dative While the dative of reference gives the person who stands in a special relationship, the so-called ethical dative gives the person interested in the entire procedure. It is a rare construction for Livy, and some instances quoted as such can be associated with some particular part of the statement. The following instances are sure: 2, 12, 13 en tibi; 2, 29, 12; 5, 13, 5 en vobis, inquit, iuvenem; 22, 60, 25 haec vobis istorum militia fuit. All these are in speeches and the appeal is to the auditor. There is the possibility of another explanation for Praef. 9 ad illa mihi pro se quisque acriter intendat animum; 2, 4o, 4 mater tibi coniunxque et liberi adsunt; 24, 38, 7 de lucro tibi, inquit, vivere me scito, where do lucro, is rhetorical for lucro. The full causal force is at times indicated by a parallel statement: 3, 8, 7 ingens terror, magis re subita, quam quod; 25, 15, 17 magis quia ipsi ob imperium in se mite ac iustum consultum volebant, quam respectu Romanorum. When a verb with a person as subject is put into the passive voice the subject is changed to the ablative of agent with de, or gui rem faez't becomes a guo res fit.
