The Genitive Many of the genitives indicate possession, yet many are construed with verbs or verbal derivatives, more commonly the latter. These, with the descriptive and the partitive genitives, form the larger part of those not indicating possession. Equivalent constructions are also found, but no attempt will be made here to point them out, as it is possible to lose sight of the genitive amid the variations and equivalents. Different readings also might cut some figure in the presentation, but in a matter where certainty is impossible, excepting in a few instances, we have not sought to be wise above what is written in the Weissen born-mueller edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Case Usage in Livy: III. The Accusative The accusative as limit of motion is confined to a few classes of words, giving an early concept of the function of the accusative. The accusative states the limiting place which is neither affected nor effected, and may express the actual or merely the prospective limit, as in 33, 10, 2 lussis proficisci Komam. The limiting activity is freely given in the supine, and z'nfitz'as occurs 6, 4o, 4; 9, 9, 4. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Case Usage in Livy: II. The Dative While the dative of reference gives the person who stands in a special relationship, the so-called ethical dative gives the person interested in the entire procedure. It is a rare construction for Livy, and some instances quoted as such can be associated with some particular part of the statement. The following instances are sure: 2, 12, 13 en tibi; 2, 29, 12; 5, 13, 5 en vobis, inquit, iuvenem; 22, 60, 25 haec vobis istorum militia fuit. All these are in speeches and the appeal is to the auditor. There is the possibility of another explanation for Praef. 9 ad illa mihi pro se quisque acriter intendat animum; 2, 4o, 4 mater tibi coniunxque et liberi adsunt; 24, 38, 7 de lucro tibi, inquit, vivere me scito, where do lucro, is rhetorical for lucro. Book Case Usage in Livy Vol 4

Download or read book Case Usage in Livy Vol 4 written by Robert Benson Steele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Case Usage in Livy, Vol. 4: The Ablative Under the Ablative are to be placed also some types of non-prepositional statements. Of these the ablative of source is occasionally found, as also the ablative indica ting that in accord with which something is done, which stands in somewhat the same relation to statements with the preposition as does the ablative of cause; though the one gives the established guide, the other the source of the impelling motive. The full causal force is at times indicated by a parallel statement: 3, 8, 7 ingens terror, magis re subita, quam quod; 25, 15, 17 magis quia ipsi ob imperium in se mite ac iustum consultum volebant, quam respectu Romanorum. When a verb with a person as subject is put into the passive voice the subject is changed to the ablative of agent with de, or gui rem faez't becomes a guo res fit. In the active the abstract noun is considered as having the same potency as the person. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
