Book FLUID TRANSIENTS IN A PIPELINE WITH ONE END OPEN

Download or read book FLUID TRANSIENTS IN A PIPELINE WITH ONE END OPEN written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water hammer during multi-phase flow is rather complex, but in some cases an upper limit to the pressure surge magnitude during water hammer can be estimated. In the case considered here, a two mile long pipeline with a single high point was permitted to partially drain. Due to gravitational effects, air bubbles up through the pipe line to its highest point, but the time required for air to reach the top of the pipe is rather long. Consequently, some transients caused by valve operations are affected by air entrapment and some are not. The intent of this research was to investigate the complex interactions between air, water vapor, and liquid during water hammer in a long pipe with one end of the pipe open to atmospheric conditions. To understand the system dynamics, experimental data was obtained from a long pipeline with an open end and also from a short, transparent tube. Transient calculations were performed for valve closures and pump operations as applicable. The limitations of available calculation techniques were considered in detail.

Book Gas liquid Transient Flow in Horizontal Pipes

Download or read book Gas liquid Transient Flow in Horizontal Pipes written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies (Taitel and Dukler, 1976) have provided a method for predicting conditions for flow regime transitions by modelling the actual physical processes taking place. This work was concerned only with steady flow conditions. Of considerable importance to the analysis of a Loss of Cooling Accident is the ability to predict the flow regime under conditions of transient flow. This report extends the steady state method of analysis to that of transient flow. It is shown that under transient conditions the transitions between flow patterns can occur at flow rates different than that which will take place if the changes in flow rate were to take place infinitely slowly. Furthermore, for rapid changes in flow rates from one set of conditions to another, flow regimes can appear which would not be observed if the change were made slowly. The theory for flow regime changes under transient flow conditions is developed and methods for predicting the onset of transition under transients presented. Experimental confirmation of the theory is described.
