Download or read book Multiple Sclerosis written by Robert M Herndon, MD and published by Demos Medical Publishing. This book was released on 2002-12-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge has been described as being like an expanding sphere with the volume of knowledge contacting a surface on the unknown. This new comprehensive review of the many fields of basic and clinical research that impact our understanding of multiple sclerosis has its basis in this premise. In doing research on MS, it is not enough to know clinical neurology or neurochemistry or neuroanatomy or pathology; it is important to understand the many other areas that relate to them. This volume provides an overview of MS-related research and will benefit many investigators in the field and help to advance our efforts to cure this, thus far intractable, disease. It is now more than 160 years since the first clinical-pathological descriptions of cases of multiple sclerosis and more than 130 years since the classic clinical description and development of diagnostic criteria by Charcot, yet MS remains an enigma. After decades of intense effort to find the cause, no cause has been clearly identified and the disease remains poorly understood. Despite the introduction of immunomodulatory therapies and immunosuppressive regimens, MS remains a devastating disease. While a great deal of progress has been made, much remains to be done. Our understanding of the disease remains limited, treatments remain inadequate, and comprehensive management all too rare. This volume is an overview of the basic sciences as they relate to MS and will provide clinicians and investigators a better understanding of the basic aspects of the disease. While it is possible to find excellent reviews of almost any aspect of MS, few attempts have been made to bring these very different aspects together in a single source. This volume is a companion to Multiple Sclerosis: Diagnosis, Medical Management, and Rehabilitation, edited by Drs. Jack S. Burks and Kenneth P. Johnson. Together, they represent an attempt to comprehensively cover the field of MS from basic research to comprehensive management and to provide a broad overview for those interested in understanding the disease better or in pursuing MS research.

Book Multiple Sclerosis Immunology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Takashi Yamamura
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-09-14
  • ISBN : 1461479533
  • Pages : 468 pages

Download or read book Multiple Sclerosis Immunology written by Takashi Yamamura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-14 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of powerful genome-wide association study technology, during the last five years, has shown that most of the “new” MS susceptibility loci are immune-response genes. It is clear that there is much novelty in the field of MS immunology, which has served as an impetus to invest in new therapies. Notably, most if not all of these are immunotherapies. Even the equally exciting field of cell-based therapies and neuro-regeneration may well rely on cells or growth factors that are no less immunomodulators than restorative of myelin and neural cell function. Multiple Sclerosis Immunology looks at MS immunology as the basis for the present and—even more—the future of treatments for this complex autoimmune condition. Both editors are immunologists, as well as clinical neurologists, and appreciate the importance of a sustained dialogue between basic and clinical scientists to ensure that “translation” is real and not just virtual.

Book Molecular Basis of Multiple Sclerosis

Download or read book Molecular Basis of Multiple Sclerosis written by Roland Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite major efforts by the scientific community over the years, our understanding of the pathogenesis or the mechanisms of injury of multiple sclerosis is still limited. Consequently, the current strategies for treatment and management of patients are limited in their efficacy. The mechanisms of tissue protection and repair are probably even less understood. One reason for these limitations is the enormous complexity of the disease and every facet of its pathogenesis, the mechanisms of tissue injury, the diagnostic procedures and finally the efficacy of treatments and their side effects. The aim of this book is to review the most recent advances made in this highly complex field.

Book Immunological and Clinical Aspects of Multiple Sclerosis

Download or read book Immunological and Clinical Aspects of Multiple Sclerosis written by R.E. Gonsette and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking back is a luxury for which scientists normally have little time. This XXV Anniversary Symposium, however, gives the opportunity of reminding us that in Belgium, where the risk of developing multiple sclerosis is among the highest in the world, a great man to whom we all pay tribute, I mean Dr Ludo van Bogaert, in 1957, took the initiative in founding the Belgian Research Group for Multiple Sclerosis. It may sound immodest but since that time members of the Belgian Research Group happen to have an honourable record of important contributions to MS research, quite out of proportion to the financial support they received for it. Indeed, when compared to the situation in English speaking countries, funding of MS research has always been neglected in our country in spite of the fact that in 1958, acting on the advice of the Belgian Research Group, the Belgian National MS Society was founded with the specific object of collecting money for research as well as for social care. At that time, the difficulty in raising funds for research was partly due to the fact that solving the problem of MS appeared almost impossible. Scientists could apparently only too slowly improve their ability to prevent and cure the disease. Media were indifferent to MS which was considered to have no news value, and the public remained uninformed.

Book Multiple Sclerosis

Download or read book Multiple Sclerosis written by Kathy Reed and published by . This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Sclerosis: The Many Faces of the Disease, is a non-fiction autoimmune disease story revolving around Suzanne McCuiston Bradley, a woman plagued with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for most of her life. In the beginning, the focus is on symptoms and early indicators of the disease. Although the National MS Society estimates that about 400,000 people have the disease, no one knows for certain. This alarming number can have serious impacts on people with MS, as well as loved ones and caregivers.A case study of Suzanne reveals her life and how she suffered from this debilitating disease. It shows how she was able to overcome in certain circumstances and how she was merely able to survive in other situations. Her life is discussed before and during MS. This story was originally about helping her find a cure, or at least relief. Later, it became about helping other people deal with the emotional and physical symptoms of MS. While one chapter is specifically about Suzanne, her battle is tied into the other chapters as well. She is used as an example whenever possible.Writing this book helped gain insight into the true life of Suzanne. The goal was to learn primarily what science could not yet answer: why this disease occurs and how to cure it. Despite the fact that these answers do not really exist, hopefully one day they will exist, this story examines these questions and other areas relative to Multiple Sclerosis.

Book Emerging and Evolving Topics in Multiple Sclerosis Pathogenesis and Treatments

Download or read book Emerging and Evolving Topics in Multiple Sclerosis Pathogenesis and Treatments written by Anne C. La Flamme and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, we have made great advances in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS) research, and this book focuses on those advances in MS pathogenesis and treatment. While some of these advances have been through new approaches and ideas that have emerged in the last decade such as the newly identified protective role that amyloid proteins may play in MS or the use of helminths to treat autoimmune diseases, others have evolved from previous theories and ideas that have only now gained momentum and a deeper understanding such as the role of HLA or gender in MS susceptibility. This book covers these emerging and evolving topics and highlights the substantial advancements made in elucidation of the factors regulating susceptibility or disease progression, identification of new ways to monitor or predict MS pathology, and development of new strategies for treating MS.

Book The Strange Case of the Missing Myelin

Download or read book The Strange Case of the Missing Myelin written by Rafael González Maldonado and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strange Case of the Missing Myelin is a scientific text. The volume of information and the rigor with which it is expounded are determinant. It is not journalistic narrative, yet it uses language honestly to allure and hold the interest of the reader. The author resorts to a wide range of tools. The enigmatic chapter headings urge the reader on to decipher their meaning. The short paragraphs prevent fatigue. The anecdote, the diaphanous wording so quick to offer an explanation when technical terms come up, the literary quotes and historical or mythological footnotes, all contribute to pleasure ful reading. And so the didactic intentions of the author are fulfilled. The analogy with the myth of Actaeon, King of Tebas, who was devoured by his hounds ate the wrathful orders of Diana, strikes me as beautifully appropriate. Were the dogs unable to recognize their master? Or was it because the goddess had covered him with a deerhide that the dogs misdirected their aggressivity? This is precisely the nature of the mystery to date that would explain the antigen-antibody interrelation and the lack of recognition of the body ́s own myelinic antigens (Actaeon) by the misdirected immune system (the dogs). Never was there a more elegant literary portrait of the immunological conflict behind multiple sclerosis. Prof. Eduardo Varela de Seijas (extract from Prologue).
