Book excerpt: This book deals with the modeling, analysis and simulation of problems arising in the life sciences, and especially in biological processes. The models and findings presented result from intensive discussions with microbiologists, doctors and medical staff, physicists, chemists and industrial engineers and are based on experimental data. They lead to a new class of degenerate density-dependent nonlinear reaction-diffusion convective equations that simultaneously comprise two kinds of degeneracy: porous-medium and fast-diffusion type degeneracy. To date, this class is still not clearly understood in the mathematical literature and thus especially interesting. The author both derives realistic life science models and their above-mentioned governing equations of the degenerate types and systematically studies these classes of equations. In each concrete case well-posedness, the dependence of solutions on boundary conditions reflecting some properties of the environment, and the large-time behavior of solutions are investigated and in some instances also studied numerically.

Book excerpt: This book is based on research on the rigorous proof of chaos and bifurcations in 2-D quadratic maps, especially the invertible case such as the Hnon map, and in 3-D ODE's, especially piecewise linear systems such as the Chua's circuit. In addition, the book covers some recent works in the field of general 2-D quadratic maps, especially their classification into equivalence classes, and finding regions for chaos, hyperchaos, and non-chaos in the space of bifurcation parameters. Following the main introduction to the rigorous tools used to prove chaos and bifurcations in the two representative systems, is the study of the invertible case of the 2-D quadratic map, where previous works are oriented toward Hnon mapping. 2-D quadratic maps are then classified into 30 maps with well-known formulas. Two proofs on the regions for chaos, hyperchaos, and non-chaos in the space of the bifurcation parameters are presented using a technique based on the second-derivative test and bounds for Lyapunov exponents. Also included is the proof of chaos in the piecewise linear Chua's system using two methods, the first of which is based on the construction of Poincar map, and the second is based on a computer-assisted proof. Finally, a rigorous analysis is provided on the bifurcational phenomena in the piecewise linear Chua's system using both an analytical 2-D mapping and a 1-D approximated Poincar mapping in addition to other analytical methods.

Book excerpt: Actuator and sensor delays are among the most common dynamic phenomena in engineering practice, and when disregarded, they render controlled systems unstable. Over the past sixty years, predictor feedback has been a key tool for compensating such delays, but conventional predictor feedback algorithms assume that the delays and other parameters of a given system are known. When incorrect parameter values are used in the predictor, the resulting controller may be as destabilizing as without the delay compensation. Delay-Adaptive Linear Control develops adaptive predictor feedback algorithms equipped with online estimators of unknown delays and other parameters. Such estimators are designed as nonlinear differential equations, which dynamically adjust the parameters of the predictor. The design and analysis of the adaptive predictors involves a Lyapunov stability study of systems whose dimension is infinite, because of the delays, and nonlinear, because of the parameter estimators. This comprehensive book solves adaptive delay compensation problems for systems with single and multiple inputs/outputs, unknown and distinct delays in different input channels, unknown delay kernels, unknown plant parameters, unmeasurable finite-dimensional plant states, and unmeasurable infinite-dimensional actuator states. Charlesworth outlines two historical horizons within John. On the one hand, there is the Jewish background to the text (complete with the evangelist's knowledge of Palestinian geography and Jewish customs) which Charlesworth perceives as offering a window into pre-70 Palestinian Judaism. On the other hand, the gospel also reflects a post-70 world in which non-believing Jews, with more unity, begin to part definitely with those who identified Jesus as the Messiah.
