Book Tunis Kairouan Carthage

Download or read book Tunis Kairouan Carthage written by Graham Petrie and published by Darf Publishers. This book was released on 1985 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunis, Kairouan and Carthage - the very names conjure up visions of 'a hundred dramatic scenes and incidents which have governed the subsequent history of the world'. In this volume (written at the beginning of the twentieth century) Graham Petrie gives a thorough and detailed account of the history and contemporary life of these Tunisian habitations. But this is no mere travel guide: the author's first-hand acquaintance with the places and people he describes is evident in the absorbing narrative and delicate watercolours which are reproduced in full colour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carthage and Tunis, Past and Present: In Two Parts During the leisure of a prolonged residence where I was often reminded of the name and glory of Carthage, I natu rally pursued trains of thought and courses of study sug gested by the scenes around me. I read the history and observed the actual condition of the country, without, how ever, any thought of communicating through the press in regard to the subjects that engaged my attention. But in the course of time, communications were received from gen tlemen and societies, asking for such a variety of information as could be furnished only by one acquainted with the geo graphy, history, races, antiquities, commerce, institutions, and even the poetry and legends pertaining to the land of dido and of hannibal. This manifestation of interest, together with some oflicial and personal expressions from the honored head of the Department of State at Washington, served to quicken my efforts, leading me to study and observe, as well to answer the inquiries of others, as to gratify my individ ual taste. Excerpt: The article History of Punic-era Tunisia has been divided into two articles: History of Roman-era Tunisia describes first the Roman Africa Province. Rome took control of Carthage after the Third Punic War (149-146). There was a period of Berber kings allied with Rome (see prior article).
