Book Carter Reads the Newspaper

Download or read book Carter Reads the Newspaper written by Deborah Hopkinson and published by Holiday House. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Carter G. Woodson didn't just read history. He changed it." As the father of Black History Month, he spent his life introducing others to the history of his people. Carter G. Woodson was born to two formerly enslaved people ten years after the end of the Civil War. Though his father could not read, he believed in being an informed citizen, so he asked Carter to read the newspaper to him every day. As a teenager, Carter went to work in the coal mines, and there he met Oliver Jones, who did something important: he asked Carter not only to read to him and the other miners, but also research and find more information on the subjects that interested them. "My interest in penetrating the past of my people was deepened," Carter wrote. His journey would take him many more years, traveling around the world and transforming the way people thought about history. From an award-winning team of author Deborah Hopkinson and illustrator Don Tate, this first-ever picture book biography of Carter G. Woodson emphasizes the importance of pursuing curiosity and encouraging a hunger for knowledge of stories and histories that have not been told. Back matter includes author and illustrator notes and brief biological sketches of important figures from African and African American history.

Book Big and Small and In Between

Download or read book Big and Small and In Between written by Carter Higgins and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You Are (Not) Small meets The Quiet Book in this beautiful compilation of all the little things that make up our big world. This wide, wonderful world contains many things. Some things are as big as a family of bears; some are as small as a reflection in a puddle. Some things are felt rather than seen. In between it all is . . . you. What kinds of things will you collect? This lovely, lyrical book collects the world by size. Divided into three chapters with three specially paper-engineered separations, every page encapsulates one precious moment that perfectly represents both a size and an experience. Beloved author Carter Higgins's poignant, poetic text and Daniel Miyares's incandescent illustrations capture a whole new way of seeing the world in this beautiful, giftable meditation on what it means to be a kid—and what it means to be a human. A GIFT FOR ALL: This book expresses a genuine love for the world in a sincere, observant way. The author's imagination and the illustrator's keen eyes make it a perfect choice for anyone seeking a gorgeous gift that celebrates the wonder of our world, whether between parents and kids, between grandparents and grandchildren, or even between friends. SPECIAL CONCEPT: Every child learns about size, usually through nonfiction. This book makes the concept of size personal and emotional, something that changes how you feel in any given situation. CLASSIC LITERATURE: Fans of A Hole is to Dig or A Tree is Nice will recognize the inspiration of classic literature and the timeless quality of this special text. THOUGHT-PROVOKING IDEA: This book will change the way every kid encounters the world. Is their room smaller than their parents' or bigger than a mouse's? Is a rock a big hill for an ant or a small pebble for a bear? The mix of poetic and practical in this text makes every life experience worth investigating both from far away and with a microscope. BELOVED AUTHOR: Carter Higgins is the author of many favorite books for kids, including the bestseller Everything You Need for a Treehouse, illustrated by Emily Hughes; Circle Under Berry, which she illustrated herself; and Audrey L and Audrey W, a chapter book series. Perfect for: • Fans of Ruth Krauss • Fans of Margaret Wise Brown • Fans of classic children's literature • Educators looking for a new way to teach the concept of size • Parents and grandparents

Book excerpt: Local Whitby girl, Colette Shipley has become fascinated by the mysteries of the new art of photography and begins to create a record of her scenic home town with its tall ships and twin lighthouses, street urchins and weathered old fishermen. One day she encounters Arthur Newton who shares her passion for the town's unique atmosphere. Colette and Arthur begin a friendship that develops further. However, unbeknown to Collette, Arthur is also married with a young child. Arthur has tried to be content with his steady job at the railways and his marriage to his childhood sweetheart Rose. However even before meeting Colette, Arthur had been living a secret life, one which he has not shared with his family, friends or even Rose: he has a real talent for painting. His talent has blossomed under the tutelage of a sympathetic gallery owner, Ebenezer Hirst, and the patronage of Laurence Steel, an established painter in the Pre-Raphaelite school. A decision not made any easier by his growing attraction for Colette...

Book The Civil War Letters of Joseph and Mary Carter of Bear Lake PA 1861 1865

Download or read book The Civil War Letters of Joseph and Mary Carter of Bear Lake PA 1861 1865 written by Don Rickerson and published by Don Rickerson. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Carter of Bear Lake PA was 34 years old when he was drafted into the Union Army in 1863, serving until the end of the Civil War. He was married to Mary Ellen Howles in 1854. They had a successful 90 acre farm and five children in the Village of Bear Lake in northwestern Pennsylvania. Joseph was an older soldier by any measurement. He was not rich, famous, commissioned or privileged so his writing is that of a simple gentleman. He served as an infantryman with the 82nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment throughout the war seeing many skirmishes and battles. We are fortunate to have the exchange of letters between Joseph and Mary. As paper was very scarce in army camps, Joseph would write on the back of Mary’s letters and send them back to her. Joseph was a foot soldier thought out his enlistment. He endured the boredom of soldiering, periodic carnage of battle and incarceration in Libby Prison as a Prisoner of War. Mary and the children stayed at the farm and kept it running while awaiting his return. The letters they exchanged showed how they tried to keep each other’s spirits up while they were apart. Mary kept Joseph apprised of the happening with the family, the farm, and the village. Joseph in turn wrote Mary of his travels, battles, and army camp life. Joseph nearly died during his imprisonment at Libby Prison in Richmond VA in January-February 1865. He was so emaciated after he was released from the Army hospital at Camp Parole on furlough home that no one recognized him. It was said that you could see candle light through his hands. He returned to the army in June 1865 and served till the 82nd was mustered out in July 1865. After the war, he returned to his wife Mary and the farm at Bear Lake. They had seven more children. At age 46, in 1876 he applied for a veteran’s pension due to health issues from Libby Prison. He died at age 50 on 7 July 1889.
