Download or read book Exceptional Crime in Early Modern Spain written by Elena del Río Parra and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exceptional Crime in Early Modern Spain accounts for the representation of violent and complex murders, analysing the role of the criminal, its portrayal through rhetorical devices, and its cultural and aesthetic impact. Proteic traits allow for an understanding of how crime is constructed within the parameters of exception, borrowing from pre-existent forms while devising new patterns and categories such as criminography, the “star killer”, the staging of crimes as suicides, serial murders, and the faking of madness. These accounts aim at bewildering and shocking demanding readers through a carefully displayed cult to excessive behaviour. The arranged “economy of death” displayed in murder accounts will set them apart from other exceptional instances, as proven by their long-standing presence in subsequent centuries.

Download or read book Modern minstrelsy written by Carole A. Holdsworth and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1979 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: «Modern Minstrelsy» «Miguel Hernández and Jacques Brel» is an analogy study of two contemporary writers, the Spanish poet Miguel Hernández and the Belgian «chansonnier» Jacques Brel. Through the tracing of universal thematic parallels in their work, «Modern Minstrelsy» discusses the poetry of Hernández and Brel as affined examples of both a socially oriented contemporary humanism and of a modernized medieval minstrel tradition. Modern and medieval, personal and didactic, violent and tender, the poetry of Hernández and of Brel proclaims the poet's serious societal responsibilities, as spokesman for and about our communal nature.
Download or read book The Basques of New York written by Gloria Pilar Totoricaguena and published by Center for Basque Studies Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generations of Basques in New York have vibrantly exercised their culture, language, values, and traditions, transmitting to their children a robust sense of ethnic identity. In today's world of globalization it is often assumed that particular communities are disappearing as a consequence of the factors of homogenization. However, the Basques have proved this false. Depicting Basque mutual aid societies, language courses, musical and dance troupes, cuisine classes, community activities, sport, political involvement, and ties to homeland institutions are just a few of the ingredients which mix to compose the chapters of this work. Readers will learn about the history and reasons why Basques left the Pyrenees of northern Spain and southern France from the personal experiences of political and economic exiles' oral histories. Original archival research allows us to discover the features of the early 1900s Centro Vasco-Americano, the Basque Government-in-exile Delegation in New York, and the development of Basque organizations. "Basqueness" is being redefined in this transnational cosmopolitan community, and with the pioneer spirit of their ancestors, latter generation Basques are nurturing and promoting Basque culture and identity to the world.
