Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The director of twenty-five films, including My Night at Maud's (1969), which was nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, and the editor in chief of Cahiers du cinéma from 1957 to 1963, Éric Rohmer set the terms by which people watched, made, and thought about cinema for decades. Such brilliance does not develop in a vacuum, and Rohmer cultivated a fascinating network of friends, colleagues, and industry contacts that kept his outlook sharp and propelled his work forward. Despite his privacy, he cared deeply about politics, religion, culture, and fostering a public appreciation of the medium he loved. This exhaustive biography uses personal archives and interviews to enrich our knowledge of Rohmer's public achievements and lesser known interests and relations. The filmmaker kept in close communication with his contemporaries and competitors: François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, and Jacques Rivette. He held a paradoxical fascination with royalist politics, the fate of the environment, Catholicism, classical music, and the French nightclub scene, and his films were regularly featured at New York and Los Angeles film festivals. Despite an austere approach to life, Rohmer had a voracious appetite for art, culture, and intellectual debate captured vividly in this definitive volume.

Created in Paris in 1875, Chloé, Jules Lefebvre's depiction of a naked water nymph, was brought to Melbourne's Young & Jackson Hotel in 1909, where it has hung ever since. In this passionate, luminous retelling, Katrina Kell seeks to unlock the riddle behind the girl on the canvas, known to history only as Marie. Download or read book From Across the Pond written by Michael T. Bellinger and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The instant attraction and love that Matthew Baldwin and Chloe Singh feel for each other during their first in-person meeting at the beginning of From Across the Pond fuels the rapid development of their relationship. The couple’s past romantic relationships with their friend Kelly Bonner, along with other temptations, add wrinkles and drama to their story. As all of these relationships develop, evolve, and become interconnected, they rub against the grain of societal and family norms, which creates drama and some suspense in the novel. It is hopeful that readers will be able to see folks of different skin colors and ethnicities, folks in the LGBTQ community, and folks in interracial relationships in a more favorable and positive light. It’s time to let go of the fear that breeds the mistrust and hate and to embrace one another as equal members of the human race. It’s time to recognize that regardless of skin color, ethnicity, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation, no matter how big or small the contribution, everyone has something positive to offer to society and civilization. About the Author Despite having been declared legally blind for the past twenty years, Michael T. Bellinger has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master’s in Education. He has worked in public accounting as a CPA and in a parochial school as a volunteer classroom teacher, where he taught computers and technology to the K-thru-8 students. Michael enjoys listening to music and audiobooks, and his tastes in both are eclectic. He enjoys writing poetry when the inspiration hits him, and he is currently working on Book Five of the six-book series of From Across the Pond. Michael and his wife, Lisa, have been married for 31 years, and together they share two grown sons. They live in a small town in NJ.

Book Sacra Pagina First Corinthians

Download or read book Sacra Pagina First Corinthians written by Raymond F. Collins and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2000 Catholic Press Association Award Winner! One of the most exciting of Paul's letters, 1 Corinthians offers a vantage point from which modern readers can reflect on diverseness in Christian Churches today. In First Corinthians, Raymond Collins explores that vantage point as well as the challenge Paul posed to the people of his time - and continues to pose in ours - to allow the gospel message to engage them in their daily lives. Paul introduces us to a flesh-and-blood community whose humanness was all too apparent. Sex, death, and money were among the issues they had to face. Social conflicts and tension within their Christian community were part of their daily lives. Paul uses all of his diplomacy, rhetorical skill, and authority to exhort the Corinthian community to be as one in Christ. In examining Paul's message and method, Collins approaches 1 Corinthians as a Hellenistic letter written to people dealing with real issues in the Hellenistic world. He cites existing Hellenistic letters to show that Paul was truly a letter writer of his own times. Collins makes frequent references to the writings of the philosophic moralists to help clarify the way in which Paul spoke to his beloved Corinthians. He also comments on some aspects of the social circumstances in which the Christians of Corinth actually lived.

Book The Unknown God

  • Author : Steven Carter
  • Publisher : Covenant Books, Inc.
  • Release : 2020-10-13
  • ISBN : 164468506X
  • Pages : 69 pages

Download or read book The Unknown God written by Steven Carter and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a very interesting account found in Acts 17:22-23 in which the Apostle Paul was waiting for Silas and Timothy in Athens. While he waited, he was provoked within his spirit when he found the city was given over to idols. Paul addressed the men of Athens by saying, In all things you are very religious, for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you. It is startling to know that the men of Athens were religious, they had objects of worship, and they had an altar; yet they didn't even know the God of their worship! We know altars to be a place of sacrifice, prayer, and religion; but the question arises, How do you worship whom you don't even know? Even Jesus gives us a glimpse into the importance of knowing Him intimately in Matthew 7:22-23: Many will say to Me in that day, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?" And then I will declare to them, "I never knew [my emphasis] you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!" (NKJV) Note that Jesus's emphasis was not on rituals but, rather, on relationship. We must ask ourselves today, are we any different from the men of Athens? I'm afraid that week after week, we fill edifices with people who don't even know God. Sure, we have objects of worship. We have buildings, instruments, podiums, microphones, lighting, etc., but do we know the God of our worship? With the help of the Holy Spirit, I will declare as the great apostle did to the men of Athens, The Unknown God.

Download or read book See You in Paradise written by J. Robert Lennon and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first substantial collection of short fiction from "a writer with enough electricity to light up the country" (Ann Patchett) "I guess the things that scare you are the things that are almost normal," observes one narrator in this collection of effervescent and often uncanny stories. Drawing on fifteen years of work, See You in Paradise is the fullest expression yet of J. Robert Lennon's distinctive and brilliantly comic take on the pathos and surreality at the heart of American life. In Lennon's America, a portal to another universe can be discovered with surprising nonchalance in a suburban backyard, adoption almost reaches the level of blood sport, and old pals return from the dead to steal your girlfriend. Sexual dysfunction, suicide, tragic accidents, and career stagnation all create surprising opportunities for unexpected grace in this full-hearted and mischievous depiction of those days (weeks, months, years) we all have when things just don't go quite right.
