Download or read book Carly s Calling written by Sue Ann Smith and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-05-29 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a combination of an editorial written by myself for the literary magazine, JAW, co-produced by myself and a friend for 2 years, the beginning of a screenplay, some poetry, and several short stories. I started the book 9 years ago as the thesis for my undergraduate BA degree which I received from Goddard College, VT. Originally it also included a survey of one novelist, Elizabeth Berg, and three famous women poets, in order to place myself in the field of writing and compare/contrast the growth pattern my writing took through the years. I elected to take those out, to avoid any copyright issues, and prove this book is about a 'dream fullfillment' and what I hope to be the beginning of my book publishing career. As a single Mom of three boys now for 8 years I have struggled to succeed and have grown in ways which I never thought possible. I finished my BA in English and Women's History, and moved on to pursue my MA in Teaching, which I graduated with on September 11th, 2007. Although, I 'appear' to be poor, I am filled with 'riches'--spiritual ones! I hope this book serves as an inspiration for all single Mom's--to never give up on your dreams, they are there, waiting for you to find them and if we are to keep 'hope' alive for us and our children, we must not give up.

At the age of two, Carly Fleischmann was diagnosed with severe autism and an oral motor condition that prevented her from speaking. Doctors predicted that she would never intellectually develop beyond the abilities of a small child. Carly remained largely unreachable through the years. Then, at the age of ten, she had a breakthrough. While working with her devoted therapists, Carly reached over to their laptop and typed “HELP TEETH HURT,” much to everyone’s astonishment. Although Carly still struggles with all the symptoms of autism, she now has regular, witty, and profound conversations on the computer with her family and her many thousands of supporters online. One of the first books to explore firsthand the challenges of living with autism, Carly’s Voice brings readers inside a once-secret world in the company of an inspiring young woman who has found her voice and her mission

Book excerpt: The Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller A People Magazine Top Ten Book of the Year! "Intelligent and captivating. Don't miss it." - People Magazine "One of the best celebrity memoirs of the year." -The Hollywood Reporter Rock Star. Composer and Lyricist. Feminist Icon. Survivor. Simon's memoir reveals her remarkable life, beginning with her storied childhood as the third daughter of Richard L. Simon, the co-founder of publishing giant Simon & Schuster, her musical debut as half of The Simon Sisters performing folk songs with her sister Lucy in Greenwich Village, to a meteoric solo career that would result in 13 top 40 hits, including the #1 song "You're So Vain." She was the first artist in history to win a Grammy Award, an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award, for her song "Let the River Run" from the movie Working Girl. The memoir recalls a childhood enriched by music and culture, but also one shrouded in secrets that would eventually tear her family apart. Simon brilliantly captures moments of creative inspiration, the sparks of songs, and the stories behind writing "Anticipation" and "We Have No Secrets" among many others. Romantic entanglements with some of the most famous men of the day fueled her confessional lyrics, as well as the unraveling of her storybook marriage to James Taylor.

Book excerpt: What do teachers really need to know (and do) to confidently mitigate, address, and resolve the sheer volume and complexity of challenging classroom behaviours they face? In It’s Never Just About the Behaviour: A holistic approach to classroom behaviour management, educator Claire English answers this very question. Behaviour isn′t ever just about the behaviour itself and effective behaviour management isn’t about simply responding to a behaviour. It is about thinking through: *the ′why′ behind the behaviour, *the ′what′ is going on in the body and the brain, and *the ′how′ you can proactively craft your pedagogy and practice to support the wellbeing, development and educational experience of all students. This book explores behaviour and classroom management through a holistic and best practice approach. It is driven by engaging and relatable narratives, grounded in research and delivers essential, actionable, and highly relevant professional learning on behaviour management. Claire empowers you to take the action you can take when you walk into your classroom. To feel supported, confident and equipped to turn your own space into an island of safety and support for each one of your students. To know that, when challenging behaviours inevitably pop up, you’ll be able to respond to them effectively and calmly. Allowing you to do the job that you got into the profession to do, and do it damn well. To teach.
Download or read book Broken Three Times written by Joan Kaufman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Three Times is a story about child abuse in America. It begins with snapshots from a mother's abusive childhood, then fast-forwards to her family's first involvement with Connecticut protective services when her children are eleven and ten. After a brief investigation, the family's case is closed, and despite their many needs, they are not provided links to any ongoing supportive services. Over the next five years we see the children pass through nearly twenty placements, while their mother continually relapses on crack and moves from one violent relationship to the next. Each chapter of the book provides a launching point for discussing state-of-the-art policy, practice, and scientific updates relevant for understanding risk, promoting resilience, and improving the child welfare system. This book will provide readers with some information about innovations and recent improvements in the system, concrete steps to take to enhance practice, ongoing gaps in our knowledge, and a deepening appreciation of the value of incorporating broad perspectives into this work--from neurobiology to social policy.
