Book Remembering Child Migration

Download or read book Remembering Child Migration written by Gordon Lynch and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1850 and 1970, around three hundred thousand children were sent to new homes through child migration programmes run by churches, charities and religious orders in the United States and the United Kingdom. Intended as humanitarian initiatives to save children from social and moral harm and to build them up as national and imperial citizens, these schemes have in many cases since become the focus of public censure, apology and sometimes financial redress. Remembering Child Migration is the first book to examine both the American 'orphan train' programmes and Britain's child migration schemes to its imperial colonies. Setting their work in historical context, it discusses their assumptions, methods and effects on the lives of those they claimed to help. Rather than seeing them as reflecting conventional child-care practice of their time, the book demonstrates that they were subject to criticism for much of the period in which they operated. Noting similarities between the American 'orphan trains' and early British migration schemes to Canada, it also shows how later British child migration schemes to Australia constituted a reversal of what had been understood to be good practice in the late Victorian period. At its heart, the book considers how welfare interventions motivated by humanitarian piety came to have such harmful effects in the lives of many child migrants. By examining how strong moral motivations can deflect critical reflection, legitimise power and build unwarranted bonds of trust, it explores the promise and risks of humanitarian sentiment.

Book On Subject and Theme

Download or read book On Subject and Theme written by Ruqaiya Hasan and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ten papers in this volume focus on Subject and Theme. Theme began its life as a semantic notion in the work of Vilém Mathesius, while Subject has traditionally been seen as just a syntactic entity. More recently two related perspectives on these concepts have attracted linguists' attention: the formal criteria for their recognition and the relations between the two concepts. Using the systemic functional model as their point of departure, the papers in the present volume consider the two notions in a wider context by relating them to the interpersonal and textual metafunctions of language. By contrast with the current linguistic approaches, the primary focus here is neither simply on formal recognition criteria nor on the relation of these elements to each other; instead, the notions of Subject and Theme are examined from the point of view of their function in the economy of discourse, with studies of their significance in English and French, as well as in a range of non-Indo-European languages. Definitions of the concepts are offered on the basis of their discourse functions, which are also important in selecting the formal recognition criteria and in understanding their mutually supportive role vis à vis each other. Most of the papers in the volume are a selection from presentations made at the 19th International Systemic Functional Congress at Macquarie University.

Book Researching Irish Australians

Download or read book Researching Irish Australians written by Brian Trainor and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 1998 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This directory provides short histories of some 5,000 of the Irish who settled in Australia in the last century. Included also are over 500 abstracts of Irish-Australian wills taken from the printed Irish will calendars 1858-1900. High and low in society are to be found there ranging from a State Governor like Sir Arthur Kennedy of Queensland down to John Augustin Martin, a billiard marker of Inverell, New South Wales, whose estate was valued at £250 when he died in 1892. Significantly, over 80 abstracts relate to women, an important feature since documentation about individual women is meagre.
