  • Pages : 308 pages

Book excerpt: Antoni Muntadas (*Barcelona, 1942) is one of the most important contemporary Spanish artists. His work addresses social, political and communications issues, the relationship between public and private space within social framework, and investigates channels of information and the ways they are used to promulgate ideas and control and censor information. Working in different media, such as photography, video, publications, Internet and multi-media installations, Muntadas often speaks about the condition of being "in between" as a point of departure for his work. This "between" can be characterized as a place of ambiguity outside specific sites or destinations. This two-volume publication is the catalogue of the retrospective exhibition that will be held at the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofi?a in Madrid in October 2011. The catalogue uses the same organizing principle as the Muntadas' exhibition that considers his oeuvre from the perspective of "constellations of space," with titles such as Micro Spaces, Power Spheres, The Construction of Fear or Translation Spaces. Each constellation is a comprehensive thematic unit of images, artist's writings as well as new and old texts by notable contributors from the field of contemporary art and theory. The second volume will contain a conversation between the director of the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofi?a, Manuel Borja-Villel, and Muntadas, plus documentary material from the installation at the Museum.

Book Spanish Cinema against Itself

Download or read book Spanish Cinema against Itself written by Steven Marsh and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish Cinema against Itself maps the evolution of Spanish surrealist and politically committed cinematic traditions from their origins in the 1930s—with the work of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, experimentalist José Val de Omar, and militant documentary filmmaker Carlos Velo—through to the contemporary period. Framed by film theory this book traces the works of understudied and non-canonical Spanish filmmakers, producers, and film collectives to open up alternate, more cosmopolitan and philosophical spaces for film discussion. In an age of the post-national and the postcinematic, Steven Marsh's work challenges conventional historiographical discourse, the concept of "national cinema," and questions of form in cinematic practice.

Book Catalan Cinema

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anton Pujol
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2024-03-26
  • ISBN : 1487544529
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Catalan Cinema written by Anton Pujol and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catalan Cinema offers a theoretical reading of the most relevant cinematic productions to emerge from Catalonia in the last twenty years. The essays in this collection examine cinema in relation to the Escola de Barcelona (The Barcelona School), a group of cinema directors that drew inspiration from British pop-art, Free Cinema, and the Nouvelle Vague to create works that defied and challenged the Franco dictatorship. Highlighting the aesthetic, social, and political elements of Catalan cinematography, contributors to this volume explore what young directors have in common with works created by more notable directors such as Joaquim Jordà, Jacinto Esteva, Jordi Grau, and Pere Portabella. Catalan Cinema focuses on the importance of modern production and its connection with the avant-garde and underground cinema from the Barcelona School. Establishing a cinematic genealogy, the volume ultimately questions if Catalan cinema’s own push for self-expression may be interpreted as a connection to Catalonia’s current drive for independence.

Book Cuban Music Counterpoints

Download or read book Cuban Music Counterpoints written by Marysol Quevedo and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book tells readers: tracing the classical music networks that Cuban composers cultivated between 1940 and 1991 through examining compositions, ensembles, and cultural institutions with a microhistorical approach. It sets the foundation for investigating how aesthetics and politics intersected in the case studies explored throughout the book: individual points of view largely determined the degree to which composers engaged in various local and international artistic networks; and these networks were constantly being nurtured and shaped by their actors, who also had to contend with national and global political and economic circumstances. This chapter provides readers with working definitions of key concepts: modernism, avant-garde, experimentalism, and vanguardia. Key figures Fernando Ortiz and Alejo Carpentier and their contributions to the intellectual milieu that Cuban composers inhabited -especially the concepts of transculturation and lo real maravilloso, respectively-are also discussed. It contextualizes the book within existing scholarship on 20th-century classical music of the Americas, Eastern Europe, and the Cold War, as well as those dealing with Cuban music and Cuban studies more broadly"--

Book In the Eye of the Storm

Download or read book In the Eye of the Storm written by Sharon G. Feldman and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Barcelona, the cultural epicenter of Catalunya, is presently experiencing the most dynamic and polemical period in its modern theater history. It is the commanding hub of an energetic theater scene that in recent years has witnessed an exuberant outpouring of new dramatists, a steady crescendo in theater attendance, and a continual increase in the international presence of Catalan directors, playwrights, and companies. Barcelona's post-Olympian cultural landscape, moreover, comprises several architecturally striking theater projects. The diversity of opportunities to stage plays in Catalan at an assortment of city spaces is unprecedented, ranging in variety from commercial locales to publicly funded stages to experimental "alternative" venues. Since its origins in the nineteenth century, modem Catalan drama has frequently exhibited a cosmopolitan and even transnational impulse, engaging in an artistic dialogue with international theater traditions of both past and present and forging its identity vis-a-vis its intercultural associations. The path along which the contemporary Catalan theater scene has struggled to recover and reconstitute the professional legitimacy and visibility that it lost during the Franco dictatorship has been a complex process, never lacking in melodramatic excess, witnessed both on and off the stage. The Barcelona stage, throughout its contemporary evolution, has been immersed in a stormy climate, whose relentlessly frenetic atmospheric activity at times may impede one from acquiring the distance necessary to see beyond the hurricane." --Book Jacket.

Book DIALECTIC OF NOVEL SCRIPT FILM ADAPTATION

Download or read book DIALECTIC OF NOVEL SCRIPT FILM ADAPTATION written by Ryota Nakanishi and published by Ryota Nakanishi . This book was released on 2023-09-25 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proves that the filmability of an original work becomes a criterion of faithful film adaptation. A theory or a theoretical work is to de-mystify illusions and misconceptions which were concocted by the ruling class ideologues. As part of RYOTA NAKANISHI’S FILM STUDIES TRILOGY (Hong Kong, China; 2021-2023), the 1st book A Study of The Three Act Structure (2021) explained the human-centric nature of The Three Act Structure as organism; the 2nd book Marxist Film Aesthetics (in Chinese; 2022) explained the nexus of Marxist aesthetics on cinema and general art practice defined as intrinsic nature / logic of an intrinsic object and dialectically turning them into specifically accurate methodology; this 3rd book (2023) is specifically written for one of the grave aesthetic issues arising in media after screening, film adaptation and its fidelity to the original. Thus, this one is for promoting media-literacy, not mainly for the pure methodology of film adaptation.
