Book The Ottawa River Canal System

Download or read book The Ottawa River Canal System written by Normand Lafrenière and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a brief history of the Ottawa River canal system from the time construction began until 1963. Although the Carillon Canal (a national historic park) would normally have been the focal point of such an undertaking, a specific study of this canal proved virtually impossible owing to the lack of information pertaining to its initial construction period. Records of the commercial use of the canal over the years were equally sparse. Fortunately, however, the history of the Carillon Canal is closely linked with that of several other canals (the Vaudreuil, St. Anne's, Chute-a-Blondau, and Grenville canals) constructed on the lower Ottawa River in the early 19th century. As a consequence this study encompasses the entire Ottawa River canal system.

Book The Carillon Canal

Download or read book The Carillon Canal written by Parks Canada and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carillon Canal, located along the Ottawa River, is a popular recreational site, a heritage site, and a part of Canada's national canal system. This document has been prepared as part of the preparation of a management plan for this site. It describes the canal's location, regional setting, and historical context, and the current situation at the site with regard to natural characteristics, historical components, facilities & services, landscape features, and attendance. It then sets out plan objectives and proposes orientations for guiding the actions of Parks Canada and its partners in the conservation, use, development, and management of the canal site. Three principal issues, reflecting concerns to be addressed and problems to be solved within the terms of the plan, are discussed along with development concerns. Guidelines are presented for the conservation & development of significant landscape, preservation & development of cultural resources, conservation of natural resources, communicating heritage values, site attendance & use, architecture & site layout, management & partnership, and revenue generation. Finally, the report presents a vision for the future of the canal, a development concept, and an overall plan that describes the functions, activities, and infrastructures required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Lachine Canal National Historic Site of Canada is located in the southern part of the island of Montreal. This 14.5 kilometre long engineering structure was built between 1821 and 1825 in order to bypass the Lachine Rapids. The canal was designated of national historic significance in 1929. This new management plan is part of the renewal of the site and its surroundings, in the midst of a full urban redevelopment process. The plan will also allow the canal to better position itself within Montreal's tourist and cultural activities. The vision for the Lachine Canal aims to create an emblematic and inspiring place, supported by a community committed to its protection and improvement"--Executive summary, p. vii.
