Book The Caribbean Integration Process

Download or read book The Caribbean Integration Process written by Kenneth O. Hall and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ever since the collapse of the West Indies Federation in 1958, debate has raged on the subject of regional integration. In this collection, the contributors illustrate that Caribbean people s similarities far outweigh any drawbacks from their diversity. The survival and success of regional institutions in health, social services, youth empowerment, education and agriculture, among others, have served to create a common bond of understanding and appreciation of the oneness of the Caribbean people. While the regional integration movement is primarily an institutional activity, its success will depend largely on the impact on the people of the region by these institutions. The contributors argue that an approach which puts people a the centre of development is necessary for the construction and effective functioning of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy the linchpin of Caribbean survival in the new globalized dispensation. Download or read book Caribbean Integration Law written by David S. Berry and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caribbean Integration Law offers a comprehensive legal analysis of the current treaties and rules governing the two main regional organisations in the Caribbean, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Both organisations are operating under new treaties, the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas and the Revised Treaty of Basseterre, respectively, which created the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, and the OECS Economic Union. The single market and economic union were built upon principles of free movement of goods, labour, and capital, and a common external tariff. This book reviews the foundations of Caribbean regional integration, the institutional frameworks of the two regional organisations, and fleshes out the scope and context of the legal systems created by the treaties. It also reviews the dispute settlement mechanisms under both treaties, including the increasingly active role of the Caribbean Court of Justice, which allows persons to enforce their treaty rights directly before the Court. The book offers selective comparisons to the current rules governing the European Union, and integrates crucial insights from the field of public international law, including the law of treaties and international institutional law.

Book Pan Caribbean Integration

Download or read book Pan Caribbean Integration written by Patsy Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical part of the history of regionalism in Latin America and the Caribbean is to be found in the widening of the economic and functional relationships among the English-speaking Caribbean to embrace other countries in the Greater Caribbean. Bringing together a range of international experts to explain the broad thrusts of CARICOM’s widening project and the opportunities and challenges it presents, the book pays particular attention to CARICOM’s relations with the French Caribbean territories. Providing a review of the pan-Caribbean landscape this volume notes the impact of these new relationships on internal CARICOM affairs; inter-regional/South-South cooperation; and political and legislative changes in European metropoles of the non-independent territories. It also contemplates recent developments in the region and globally, such as political instability in Brazil and Venezuela, Britain’s decision to leave the European Union and the policies of the Donald Trump administration. This edited collection will be an important resource for students and researchers in Latin American and Caribbean politics, economics, development, history and heritage.

Book Caribbean Trade and Integration

Download or read book Caribbean Trade and Integration written by Roger Hosein and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional integration has emerged as perhaps the most controversial issue within the Caribbean. While some progress in implementing economic reforms, both at the national and regional level are observable, the efforts made by Caribbean policymakers to strengthen regional cooperation and integration have not yielded the envisioned level of economic transformation. Caribbean Trade and Integration distinguishes itself by combining history with sound economic and policy analysis. Moreover, this book reviews a survey of several key historical studies that have identified the urgent need for a change in policy action among Caribbean Community member states over time and that have outlined many pointed policy suggestions to effect the same. The book culminates by addressing the need to unpause the Caribbean Single Market and Economy and proposes a number of initiatives to generate this outcome. While this book is written to appeal to an academic audience, it also provides essential reading for policy practitioners, stakeholder groups, the CARICOM Secretariat and those interested in the dynamics of Caribbean regional integration.

Book Dependency and Socialism in the Modern Caribbean

Download or read book Dependency and Socialism in the Modern Caribbean written by Euclid A. Rose and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three small economies that are the subject of this study were established as artificial colonial societies and have remained extremely vulnerable to the international capitalists system, a situation that has led to homegrown efforts to assert methods of development not associated with capitalism. After placing the developmental realities of the three countries in the general context of the Caribbean region and the global capitalist system, Rose (Siena College) critically examines the attempts of the three countries' experiments with socialism, begun in the 1970s. She reserves greater criticism for the United States as she turns her attention to U.S. government efforts to destabilize the countries in an effort to prevent the emerging of any socialist alternatives in an area it viewed as part of its sphere of influence. Book Caricom Single Market and Economy

Download or read book Caricom Single Market and Economy written by Kenneth O. Hall and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) has for years been touted as the most critical pillar in Caribbean regional integration. Yet, for years, the implementation of the CSME stalled due to the absence of a common view as to its feasibility, the speed of its implementation, the institutional capacity, programming for public education and ultimately, its benefits. In this work, a special edition of the Integrationist, and put together by the UWI-CARICOM project, the CSME is explained in all its dimensions. The contents cover the background to the establishment of the CSME and perspectives on its implementation. The main provisions and expected benefits of the Single Market are also presented along with the strategic framework and efforts at resource mobilisation to make the CSME a reality. The importance of the Caribbean Court of Justice to the effective functioning of the CSME is also outlined. The book concludes with a call to the member states for a unity in both understanding and action in the pursuit of integration, not as choice, but rather as necessity. The work is complemented by the inclusion of several appendices notably the original 1989 Grand Anse Declaration, the 2005 PetroCaribe Agreement as well as an indicative plan of action by priorities and an outline of major technical assistance resource gaps. "

Book Caribbean Imperatives

Download or read book Caribbean Imperatives written by Kenneth O. Hall and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With the launch of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy and the Caribbean Court of Justice, the Caribbean Community has taken major steps to promote closer and more intensive forms of economic cooperation among its constituent members. This effort requires the adoption of innovative approaches to regional governance and creative regional development strategies aimed at maximizing the exercise of sovereignty within the Community and also optimizing the development possibilities of the region. The 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Caribbean Community in 2003 marked an important milestone in the historical evolution of regional integration in the Caribbean. Caribbean Imperatives focuses on several important topics relevant to the future of the community by addressing issues such as the conception of the Caribbean Community; integration theory; the exercise of sovereignty; the Single Market and Economy; production integration; the external relations of the community; and the importance of multilateralism for the viability of small states in the international system. The analysis contained in the volume is extremely relevant to policy makers in the region in managing the transition to more intensive forms of regional integration aimed at improving the well-being of the people of the Caribbean. Book Nested Identities

Download or read book Nested Identities written by Guntram Henrik Herb and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1999 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work explores the vital importance of territory and space to any genuine understanding of nationalism and identity. Too often, the contributors argue, national identity is analyzed apart from the lands that are integral to its formation, as territory is seen as a commodity to be brokered rather than as central to a group's self-definition. This volume combines theoretical insights with structured case studies on how national identity manifests itself in space and at different geographical scales.

Book Globalization and Governance

Download or read book Globalization and Governance written by Ann Marie Bissessar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-10-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the controversial nature of globalization, there is no doubt that the pace and intensity of global interactions has been multiplied exponentially over the last few decades. Criticism of globalization is generally arranged into three camps: political, economic and cultural. Political critics point to the status of the small state and conclude either that it is in retreat, or that the state has reconstituted itself to confront the challenges posed by globalization, thereby transforming itself into a "competition state." Economic critics hold that globalization is nothing new, that international transactions are in the logic of capitalism and that the trade along the silk route goes back centuries. Cultural critics protest that globalization is taking us headlong into the "homogenization of the world." Others warn of new fault lines that would lead to "a clash of civilizations" and international conflicts along those lines. Others lament that cultural globalization will end with the Americanization of the world. This collection of essays, like the debates themselves, is divided into three parts. The first section focuses on the political aspects of globalization. In one essay, "Globalization and the Caribbean," the essayist argues that internationalization leaves no room for small countries in the Caribbean. The essays in the second section are devoted to an economic inquiry into the process and impact of globalization. In "Inequality and the Division of Gains at the Global Level," one essayist notes that the logic of economic theory is being overwhelmed by the interests of the powerful, and that the concerns of the poor countries are important only to the point where they begin to impact the well-being of the rich. The final section explores the issue of cultural and social integration. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book Globalization 2 volumes

Download or read book Globalization 2 volumes written by Ashish Vaidya and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-12-19 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a comprehensive collection of cutting-edge scholarship on the economic, international business, political, legal, and environmental ramifications of globalization—one of the hottest topics of the day. International trade is as old as nations. During the last five decades, however, advances in technology and transportation have changed the scope and method of international trade. Disputes rage about the effects of these changes; advocates for different positions offer argument, but little factual or theoretical analysis. Globalization offers all the information readers need to sort out the arguments. Written with the highest degree of scholarship, intended for college students or working professionals, the encyclopedia provides both introductory material to broad economic, legal, political, and environmental theory, and in-depth analysis of how theory interacts with practice in the framework of global trade. A trader in New York can, in a matter of seconds, execute a billion-dollar currency transaction in Hong Kong. What does this transaction mean to New Yorkers, to residents of Hong Kong, and to the rest of the world? This book gives readers the tools to answer those questions.

Book Rethinking Free Trade Economic Integration and Human Rights in the Americas

Download or read book Rethinking Free Trade Economic Integration and Human Rights in the Americas written by María Belén Olmos Giupponi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers the first systematic overview of the protection of human rights in trade agreements in the Americas. Traditionally, trade agreements in the Americas were concerned with economic questions and paid little attention to human rights. However, in the wake of the 'new regionalism', which emerged at the end of the last century, more clauses addressing social issues such as labour rights and environmental standards were inserted in trade agreements. As economic integration increased, a framework for the protection of human rights evolved. This book argues that this framework allows for human rights protection on a transnational level, while constructing regional identities. Looking at the four key regional integration processes, namely the Caribbean Community, the Central American Integration System, the Andean Community of Nations and the Southern Common Market, and also at the North American Free Trade Agreement, it shows how the integration process has reached a considerable degree of consolidation. Writing on key sources in English for the first time, this book will be essential reading for all free trade and human rights scholars.
