Book Reefs at Risk in the Caribbean

Download or read book Reefs at Risk in the Caribbean written by Lauretta Marie Burke and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many coastal communities in Latin America and the Caribbean depend on the resources provided by reefs for their livelihoods. The Reefs at Risk in the Caribbean project is a response to an information need. The primary goal is to raise awareness and improve management by improving the knowledge base on the status of and threats to coral reefs.

Book Navigating Social ecological Tradeoffs in a Highly Exploited Caribbean Coral Reef Fishery

Download or read book Navigating Social ecological Tradeoffs in a Highly Exploited Caribbean Coral Reef Fishery written by Tyler T. Pavlowich and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishing on coral reefs supports the livelihoods of millions of people around the world, but also has negative impacts fish population and, consequently, reef ecosystem health. Poverty and weak governance capacity have impeded the design and implementation of appropriate management systems. Here, I present three studies that advance the understanding of key social-ecological interactions in coral reef fisheries and that were inspired by actual management questions faced by stakeholders in the Montecristi province of the Dominican Republic. In the first chapter, I observed and described fishers' foraging behavior and decision making during the fishing process. This provided a novel insight into the fishing process with implications for management decisions on gear and species restrictions. In the second chapter, I proposed and simulated the effects of implementing a new strategy for managing stoplight parrotfish, Sparisoma viride, a protogynous hermaphrodite and key species for maintaining reef health. I built an agent-based population model to bring together demographic information from empirical studies and theoretical models to test how three aspects of fishing - fishing pressure, size selection, and life-phase selection - would interact to determine the biological outcomes of prohibiting the capture of certain life phases. I found that the easy-to-understand rule of prohibiting brightly-colored terminal-phase males could be an effective means of controlling the capture of this species. In the third chapter, I adapted the model in chapter two to compare other management options within the context of a highly exploited fishery. I tuned the model to better reflect the demographic processes of an overfished reef, and compared the population and economic outcomes associated with various management interventions. I found that stakeholders will face tradeoffs between short-and long-term economic gains, but that population rebuilding is a long-term, social-ecological win-win. Stakeholders can use this information to decide which strategies are likely to achieve ecological goals and what cost to expect from their implementation. Together, this body of work advances understanding of effective management interventions to improve the condition of coral reef ecosystems and sustain the livelihoods of fishers who depend on them.

Book Coral Reef Fishes

Download or read book Coral Reef Fishes written by Ewald Lieske and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide includes all fishes that are likely to be observed by people visiting or diving on the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific - including the Red Sea - and Western Atlantic oceans to a depth of 60m. 2074 species are listed, with each major form included, whether male, female, immature or a geographical variety. Identification characteristics are highlighted, with the text covering where the species is likely to be found on a reef and where it is found in the world, with an introduction to the habitat and how to identify fish in the wild.

Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Insects is a comprehensive work devoted to all aspects of insects, including their anatomy, physiology, evolution, behavior, reproduction, ecology, and disease, as well as issues of exploitation, conservation, and management. Articles provide definitive facts about all insects from aphids, beetles and butterflies to weevils and yellowjackets. Insects are beautiful and dreadful, ravenous pests and devastating disease vectors, resilient and resistant to eradication, and the source of great benefit and great loss for civilization. Important for ecosystem health, they have infl.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Reef Fisheries written by Polunin Nicholas V.C. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reef ecosystems extend throughout the tropics. Exploited by small-scale fishers, reefs supply food for millions of people, but, worldwide, there are growing worries about the productivity and current state of these ecosystems. Reef fish stocks display many features of fisheries elsewhere. However, habitat spatial complexity, biological diversity within and among species, ecosystem intricacy and variable means of exploitation make it hard to predict sustainable modes and levels of fishing.

Book Fish Fishing Diving and the Management of Coral Reefs

Download or read book Fish Fishing Diving and the Management of Coral Reefs written by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is a multi-disciplinary attempt to understand how coral reef resources can be sustainably managed. I begin by examining the peer-reviewed literature on artisanal reef fisheries, identifying gaps in knowledge, and proposing a set of priority areas for future research. Ecological examinations of trap fishing and gill nets follow. Fish trap bycatch can be dramatically reduced by the inclusion of escape gaps that allow juveniles and narrow-bodied species to escape, although catch of ecologically important herbivores remains high. Gill nets capture the few remaining apex predators present on Caribbean coral reefs, and as such are unsustainable. The second half of the dissertation is a tripartite presentation of the results of interviews with 177 fishers and 211 professional SCUBA divers on Curaçao and Bonaire. First, I consider whether interviewees' baseline conception of a healthy reef ecosystem is actually a degraded state, and they have a "shifting baseline." Then, I evaluate interviewees' discount rates and present bias, and relate those measures to their preferred management approaches. Lastly, I contemplate how to reconcile ecosystem requirements with stakeholder preferences, and use socioeconomic information to develop a sustainable management plan.

Book Towards Marine Ecosystem based Management in the Wider Caribbean

Download or read book Towards Marine Ecosystem based Management in the Wider Caribbean written by Lucia Fanning and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approach that encompasses the human and natural dimensions of ecosystems is one that the Wider Caribbean Region knows it must adopt and implement, in order to ensure the sustainable use of the region's shared marine resources. This volume contributes towards that vision, bringing together the collective knowledge and experience of scholars and practitioners within the Wider Caribbean to begin the process of assembling a road map towards marine ecosystem based management (EBM) for the region. It also serves a broader purpose of providing stakeholders and policy actors in each of the world's sixty-four Large Marine Ecosystems, with a comparative example of the challenges and information needs required to implement principled ocean governance generally and marine EBM in particular, at multiple levels. Additionally, the volume serves to supplement the training of graduate level students in the marine sciences by enhancing interdisciplinary understanding of challenges in implementing marine EBM.
