Book excerpt: My life before my husband's stroke was a whirlwind of activity. I worked multiple jobs at times, pursued and completed three advanced degrees, and finished my teaching career. During the move we completed to Oklahoma City in July 2014, I was writing my doctoral dissertation and teaching an online graduate education class. I hoped for an encore career in Oklahoma City.On February 24, 2016, Jerry was unable to wake up. After spending the day in the Emergency Room, a doctor came in to give the diagnosis and prognosis. Jerry suffered a rare and serious bilateral thalamic stroke and probably would not leave the hospital alive. He told me the kindest thing I could do was to withhold food and let Jerry go.At the same time, God told me to "Be still, stop striving, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10) For the first time in my life, I was forced to stop everything I was doing and focus on my God and the strength I now desperately needed to move forward. Over the next 22 amazing months of Jerry's life, God worked with me, Jesus held my hand, and the Holy Spirit gave me inner strength. The lessons I learned through these days are shared in my book. My prayer life became a lifeline. My quiet time became a necessary start to the day. My relationship with my Lord grew during those 22 months more than it had in the previous 70 years of my life.

Book For the Love of God and Family

Download or read book For the Love of God and Family written by Martha H. Robertson and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caregiving is the most humbling yet rewarding of all callings if you go into it with your eyes wide open. Like all life-altering events, it requires research and support from both professionals and those in your circle who have already grown into this role. For the Love of God and Family is intended to draw you into the reality of what God has chosen to bless you with during this chapter in your life. Boy, the idea of this as a blessing from God just seems wrong! Yet you will see how approaching this time in your life with a complete sense of what your role is and who your care receiver is in this new relationship will help you come alongside your loved one with understanding and compassion. Your heart will forever be tender toward this season in your loved one's life. This book is all about jump-starting this journey by helping you find the confidence and courage to step out and give yourself the freedom to find your joy and give your care receiver permission to feel his or her own joy. That, in its own right, is a God-given blessing beyond anything you have ever experienced. For the Love of God and Family will give you the tools you need to guard your heart and protect that joy while living in this precious season of life. You will see where it will be necessary to console yourself to flexibility toward ever-changing challenges. Martha will use this book to help you discover the hard questions that need to be asked, and the answers you should expect to gather the information and help you are going to require. Martha draws from scripture support and confidence while sharing her story.

Book God is Involved

Download or read book God is Involved written by Bethany A. Uhl and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Been there? You have forty-five minutes until the doctor appointment. Plenty of time. But then your mother decides she should clean out her purse and possibly use a different one. As you are going out the front door, she thinks maybe she should go to the bathroom one more time. If you have been there, you will know that you need more than patience. You need to know that God is involved. These stories are real. Bethany Uhl’s insight is that God is close and his Word is important for caregivers. These devotions build on actual events and reflect the insights and encouragements the Word of God gives. She has cared for parents and loved ones through crises and everyday experiences, frustrations, and joys. But more important, her stories reveal how much God was involved in helping and clarifying what she did. This book shares experiences and reflections of the ups and downs of caregiving and relates them to the Word and Spirit of God. These devotions are easy to read. They come from real people and offer practical advice from a biblical point of view. Each entry includes the full biblical texts as well as a prayer for the day. Your story is real too. When you face the challenges of being a loving caregiver, you will find your experience reflected in the many people Bethany writes about.

Book Formed Together

  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Formed Together written by Manager Keith Dow and published by . This book was released on 2021-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joy, pain, celebration, and grief are constant companions on the journey of caregiving. While remaining detached might seem the preferable option, it is not possible to disentangle the threads of our interwoven stories. Our lives are shaped by each other. We are transformed by our encounters. In Formed Together, Keith Dow explores the questions of why we should, and why we do, care for one another. He considers what it means for human beings to be interdependent, created in the image of a loving God. Dow recounts personal experiences of supporting people with intellectual disabilities while drawing upon theological and philosophical sources to discover the ethical underpinnings of Christian care. Formed Together reveals that human beings care for one another not merely by choice, but because every person relies upon others. People are called together in mutually formative practices of care, and human flourishing means learning to care well. Dow suggests five virtues that mark ethical caregiving, such as humble courage and quiet attentiveness. These practices can help guide caregivers in responding to the divine call to care. Dow demonstrates that ethical practices of care do not depend upon intelligence or rational ability. Many are called to the vocation of tending to and being present in the needs of others. To be formed together in the divine image means that caregivers never entirely comprehend themselves, others, or God. Rather, caring well means that humans are to accompany one another in and through experiences of profound mystery and revelation. --Thomas Reynolds, Associate Professor of Theology at Emmanuel College, Toronto School of Theology, University of Toronto
