Book The Evolutionary Biology of the Bivalvia

Download or read book The Evolutionary Biology of the Bivalvia written by Elizabeth Harper and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2000 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bivalves are key components of recent marine and freshwater ecosystems and have been so for most of the Phanerozoic. Their rich and long fossil record, combined with their abundance and diversity in modern seas, has made bivalves the ideal subject of palaeobiological and evolutionary studies. Despite this, however, topics such as the early evolution of the class, relationships between various taxa and the life habits of some key extinct forms have remained remarkably unclear. This volume integrates palaeontological and zoological approaches and sheds new light on the course of bivalve evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located where the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea converge, the Florida Keys are distinctive for their rich and varied marine fauna. The Keys are home to nearly sixty taxonomic families of bivalves such as clams and mussels--roughly half the world's bivalve family diversity. The first in a series of three volumes on the molluscan fauna of the Keys and adjacent regions, Seashells of Southern Florida: Bivalves provides a comprehensive treatment of these bivalves, and also serves as a comparative anatomical guide to bivalve diversity worldwide. Paula Mikkelsen and Rüdiger Bieler cover more than three hundred species of bivalves, including clams, scallops, oysters, mussels, shipworms, jewel boxes, tellins, and many lesser-known groups. For each family they select an exemplar species and illustrate its shell and anatomical features in detail. They describe habitat and other relevant information, and accompany each species account with high-resolution shell photographs of other family members. Text and images combine to present species--to family-level characteristics in a complete way never before seen. The book includes fifteen hundred mostly color photographs and images of shells, underwater habitats, bivalves in situ, original anatomical and hinge drawings, scanning electron micrographs, and unique transparent--shell illustrations with major organ systems color-coded and clearly shown. Seashells of Southern Florida: Bivalves is the most complete guide to subtropical bivalves available. It is an essential tool for students and teachers of molluscan diversity and systematics, and an indispensable identification guide for collectors, scuba divers, naturalists, environmental consultants, and natural-resource managers.

Book The Marine Flora and Fauna of Hong Kong and Southern China V

Download or read book The Marine Flora and Fauna of Hong Kong and Southern China V written by Brian Morton and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 6-25 April 1998, the Tenth International Workshop on the Marine Flora and Fauna of Hong Kong and South China was convened at the Swire Institute of Marine Science of the University of Hong Kong. Thirteen scientists from six countries and twenty-two scientists and students from Hong Kong investigated aspects of the marine flora and fauna of the Cape d'Aguilar Marine Reserve and the southeastern waters of Hong Kong. This was to obtain more information about the newly-established reserve (the only one in Hong Kong) and the changes that had taken place on the seabed in the southern waters since they were dredged between 1992-1995, respectively, and, in the latter case, to see if there had been any subsequent benthic recovery. The Proceedings of the workshop contains thirty-six original research papers dealing with aspects of the taxonomy and anatomy, behaviour and physiology of marine life in Hong Kong and Southern China. Papers also explore aspects of Hong Kong's marine parks and reserves, including the pollution of Hong Kong's marine life with particular reference to the Cape d'Aguilar Marine Reserve, established only in 1996, and the fauna of its territorial southern waters. The Workshop was sponsored by the University of Hong Kong, the Croucher Foundation and the K.C. Wong Foundation so as to bring eminent overseas scientists to Hong Kong to work with their local colleagues and students. The success of the workshop concept is self-evident in the contents and scope of these proceedings. This was the eighth workshop convened in Hong Kong since 1977 and these proceedings have become the single-most important body of information on the long-term changes that have taken place in its marine environment over an extended time-frame. The volumes are also the largest regional repository of information on the marine life of the territorial waters of Hong Kong and the northern rim of the South China Sea. For those with any interest in Hong Kong's marine environment, therefore, this proceedings and its predecessors are essential reading.

Book Conservation Palaeobiology of Marine Ecosystems

Download or read book Conservation Palaeobiology of Marine Ecosystems written by R. Nawrot and published by Geological Society of London Special Publications. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation palaeobiology tracks the history of ecosystems based on the fossil record to guide conservation decisions and contribute to the theoretical foundations of conservation biology. The accelerating pace of global change requires better understanding of the long-term resilience and adaptive capacities of ecosystems. Fossil assemblages in outcrops and cores, together with surface accumulations of skeletal remains, represent unique archives of past ecosystem dynamics and baseline community states prior to anthropogenic impacts. However, as biological data retrieved from fossil and death assemblages cannot be treated in isolation, conservation palaeobiology integrates palaeontological and geological tools to account for the nature of the stratigraphic record. This volume brings together studies that demonstrate how combining marine palaeoecological records with other types of geohistorical data (taphonomic, sedimentological, geochronological, geochemical) can inform biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. The papers highlight novel approaches and challenges in applying geohistorical data to conservation problems, discuss the limitations imposed by time averaging, and offer both deep- and near-time perspectives on conservation palaeobiology of marine ecosystems.

Book Analytical catalogue of fresh and brackish water molluscs of Russia and adjacent countries

Download or read book Analytical catalogue of fresh and brackish water molluscs of Russia and adjacent countries written by M. Vinarski and published by Litres. This book was released on 2022-01-29 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The monograph summarizes information on taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution and some aspects of bionomics of molluscs of the former USSR fresh and brackish waters. This ‘Analytical catalogue’ is a deeply improved and updated version of two previously published catalogue works (Yu.I. Kantor, A.V. Sysoev “Catalogue of molluscs of Russia and adjacent countries”, 2002, in Russian; and Yu.I. Kantor, M.V. Vinarski, A.A. Shileyko, A.V. Sysoev “Catalogue of the continental mollusks of Russia and adjacent territories”, 2010). In total, the data on 424 nominal species of Bivalvia and 728 nominal species of Gastropoda are included into this book. The actual species richness of aquatic continental molluscs of the former USSR perhaps is significantly lower since validity of many of these nominal species may be questioned and a portion of them is destined to be synonymized in future. During preparation of the book the authors tried to take into account different views on systematization of the ex- USSR aquatic molluscs and to find some correspondence between the ‘Russian’ system (founded in 1960–1970s by Ya.I. Starobogatov) and the approach followed by malacologists working outside Russia. Current approaches to the ‘species problem’ in malacology are briefly discussed. Also, the catalogue includes information about distribution of all molluscan species among large regions of the former USSR area, some data about invasions of alien species and the conservation status of indigenous taxa in accordance with IUCN Red List criteria. The quantitative estimates of faunistic similarity between aquatic malacofaunas of the ex-USSR large regions and the results of the cluster analysis carried out on the basis of these estimates are also provided. The book is addressed to malacologists, biogeographers, hydrobiologists as well as to university lecturers and students.

Book Oceanography and Marine Biology

Download or read book Oceanography and Marine Biology written by S. J. Hawkins and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever-increasing interest in oceanography and marine biology and their relevance to global environmental issues create a demand for authoritative reviews summarizing the results of recent research. Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review has catered to this demand since its founding by the late Harold Barnes more than 50 years ago. Its objectives are to consider, annually, the basic areas of marine research, returning to them when appropriate in future volumes; to deal with subjects of special and topical importance; and to add new subjects as they arise. The favourable reception and complimentary reviews accorded to all the volumes shows that the series is fulfilling a very real need. Volume 55 follows closely the objectives and style of the earlier volumes, continuing to regard the marine sciences—with all their various aspects—as a unity. Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of marine science are dealt with by experts actively engaged in these fields, and every chapter is peer-reviewed by other experts working actively in the specific areas of interest. Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Book The Chora of Metaponto 7

Download or read book The Chora of Metaponto 7 written by Joseph Coleman Carter and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 1713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh volume in the Institute of Classical Archaeology's series on the rural countryside (chora) of Metaponto is a study of the Greek sanctuary at Pantanello. The site is the first Greek rural sanctuary in southern Italy that has been fully excavated and exhaustively documented. Its evidence—a massive array of distinctive structural remains and 30,000-plus artifacts and ecofacts—offers unparalleled insights into the development of extra-urban cults in Magna Graecia from the seventh to the fourth centuries BC and the initiation rites that took place within the cults. Of particular interest are the analyses of the well-preserved botanical and faunal material, which present the fullest record yet of Greek rural sacrificial offerings, crops, and the natural environment of southern Italy and the Greek world. Excavations from 1974 to 2008 revealed three major phases of the sanctuary, ranging from the Archaic to Early Hellenistic periods. The structures include a natural spring as the earliest locus of the cult, an artificial stream (collecting basin) for the spring's outflow, Archaic and fourth-century BC structures for ritual dining and other cult activities, tantalizing evidence of a Late Archaic Doric temple atop the hill, and a farmhouse and tile factory that postdate the sanctuary's destruction. The extensive catalogs of material and special studies provide an invaluable opportunity to study the development of Greek material culture between the seventh and third centuries BC, with particular emphasis on votive pottery and figurative terracotta plaques.

Book Ornaments and Other Ambiguous Artifacts from Franchthi

Download or read book Ornaments and Other Ambiguous Artifacts from Franchthi written by Catherine Perlès and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famous Franchthi Cave excavations in Greece brought to light an exceptionally long sequence of ornaments, spanning from the earliest Upper Paleolithic to the end of the Neolithic. This volume focuses on the Neolithic, whose assemblages are far more diversified than those of earlier times. The introduction during the Neolithic of entirely artificial shapes, geometric and anthropomorphic, creates a marked departure from earlier periods and shows new directions in creativity by the bead makers. It also denotes a conceptual break in the treatment of shell, no longer solely a natural element barely modified by perforation, but now also a raw material rendered anonymous by workmanship. Due to the systematic sieving of the sediments and its location by the sea, the Franchthi cave and its outdoor settlement, the Paralia, yielded one of the richest collection of ornaments for Neolithic Greece.

Book Convergent Evolution on Earth

Download or read book Convergent Evolution on Earth written by George R. McGhee, Jr. and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of patterns of convergent evolution on Earth that suggests where we might look for similar convergent forms on other planets. Why does a sea lily look like a palm tree? And why is a sea lily called a “lily” when it is a marine animal and not a plant? Many marine animals bear a noticeable similarity in form to land-dwelling plants. And yet these marine animal forms evolved in the oceans first; land plants independently and convergently evolved similar forms much later in geologic time. In this book, George McGhee analyzes patterns of convergent evolution on Earth and argues that these patterns offer lessons for the search for life elsewhere in the universe. Our Earth is a water world; 71 percent of the earth's surface is covered by water. The fossil record shows that multicellular life on dry land is a new phenomenon; for the vast majority of the earth's history—3,500 million years of its 4,560 million years of existence—complex life existed only in the oceans. Explaining that convergent biological evolution occurs because of limited evolutionary pathways, McGhee examines examples of convergent evolution in forms of feeding, immobility and mobility, defense, and organ systems. McGhee suggests that the patterns of convergent evolution that we see in our own water world indicate the potential for similar convergent forms in other water worlds. We should search for extraterrestrial life on water worlds, and for technological life on water worlds with continental landmasses.

Book Companion For The Shell Collector

Download or read book Companion For The Shell Collector written by Sven Erik Gehrmann and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is based on the WORLD REGISTER OF MARINE SPECIES (WORMS), which is an international platform of science. This includes the currently valid scientific names and systematics of our recent marine animals. This book presents more than 600 different species of marine and freshwater molluscs. It also includes some species of sea urchins, starfish and arthropods, bringing the total number of diverse species to more than 780. The work places the species in the context of their habitats, their survival and reproduction strategies, and their aquaristic durability, if live specimens can be obtained. This book presents both: The live animals for the vivarists and their empty shells for the collectors. Many of the species shown here are not common, unusual or even rare. In addition, some photos of original habitats and aquarium photographs round off the work. In passing, the book also comments on some current environmental problems, which are unfortunately usually not mentioned in conventional works on this subject. A very informative book, which should inspire reflection and action at the same time.

Book Limitations and Effects of Waste Disposal on an Ocean Shelf

Download or read book Limitations and Effects of Waste Disposal on an Ocean Shelf written by Florida Ocean Sciences Institute and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three year study to determine the effects of sewage outfall on macroscopic marine life and human recreation by comparison surveys was made using Boca Raton as a control for the Pompano Beach and Delray, Florida, outfalls. Sand samplings from the sewage lift stations were tested for total fecal and coliform counts, using standard methods. Temperature, salinity and current profiles were done and fluorometric dilution measurements were augmented by Sample Fit Analysis and Gausian Fit Analysis, measuring concentration deviations of the dye tracking of plumes resulting from the rising effluent surface 'boils'. A diffusion model furnished the basis of analysis on the various physical data and charted the fluorometric data. Rules are enumerated for limiting pollution on beaches as set by the state water quality controls.
