    Book Details:
  • Author : Allison Karpyn

  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book Food and Public Health written by Allison Karpyn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new introduction to public health's most elemental topic Food is baked in to most things that public health is and does. But for a field charged with carrying torches as divergent as anti-hunger and anti-obesity, it's unlikely, even impossible, to shape a unified approach to complex concepts like food environment, food access, or even nutrition. Food and Public Health offers a contextualized, accessible introduction to understanding the foundations (and contradictions) at the intersection of these two topics. It distills the historical, political, sociological, and scientific factors influencing what we eat and where our food comes from, then offers actionable insights for future nutritionists, social workers, dietitians, and researchers in public health. Guiding the reader through more than a century of food-focused regulation, policy, and education, Food and Public Health is an essential introduction to: · food production and availability on a global and neighborhood scale · dietary guidelines, agricultural subsidies, rationing, and other attempts by governments to shape their citizens' diets · best practices in health promotion and chronic disease prevention · food insecurity and its paradoxical role as driver of both hunger and obesity Enriched with real-world examples and case studies, Food and Public Health offers a crucial link between kitchen tables and populations for the classroom.

Download or read book Thailand a Market for U S Products written by Paul A. Mayer and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand is an excellent market for American goods. Political stability, traditional friendship with the United States, popularity of American products, sound fiscal and economic management, and gradual industrialization with a resulting rise in individual purchasing power--all create a welcoming climate for sales of U.S. products. In recognition of this potential, Bangkok has been chosen as the site for a new U.S. Trade Center serving the entire Southeast Asian area. This study is part of the Department of Commerce's continuing effort toward increasing U.S. exports and the general stimulating of our international trade. The expansion of American-Thai economic relations will not only assist in improving our balance of payments and thus aid American economic growth, but can also contribute substantially to the well-being of the Thai people.

Book How to Apply Excise Taxes to Fight Obesity

Download or read book How to Apply Excise Taxes to Fight Obesity written by Patrick Petit and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fighting the obesity epidemic has so far proven a difficult challenge, given the diversity of natural and processed foods, the complexity of food supply chains, and the fact that targeting excessive caloric consumption is far trickier than reducing overall consumption (as for tobacco). Nevertheless, efforts to curb caloric intake are gearing up and the experience from tobacco control has drawn much attention on a potential role for excise taxes in fighting obesity. Many related questions have therefore been raised as part of the IMF’s capacity development work: Should excises on unhealthy food be used to fight obesity? If so, under what conditions? What are the product and market characteristics that would help identify the relevant tax bases and the rates at which to tax them? While acknowledging that the scientific evidence keeps evolving, this note summarizes the ongoing debate and practice on food excises and on their potential role as a policy tool to fight the obesity epidemic, with a view to assist policymakers in deciding whether to go forward, and if so, how.How to Apply Excise Taxes to Fight Obesity
