Book excerpt: A "word artist" delighting in visual and performance elements, this is Stephanie Christie's third collection of poetry. Adventurous, curious and moving, her work braves abstraction and socio-political insights. Widely published, Christie's work has been taught at the University of Auckland, appeared in Fringe Festivals, and she has been the featured poet at numerous events. The poems at their best are devastating in their accuracy, delicate and brutal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Light on Dark Matter', held from 10-14 June 1985 in the Dutch seaside resort of Noordwijk, was the first international conference devoted to the results of the all-sky survey by the US-Dutch-UK Infra-Red Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). As such, it was a hommage to the scientists, engineers and technicians who conceived, built and operated this extremely successful satellite. That this was generally felt to be the case, was proven by the large number of participants (over 200 from seventeen different nations), the li vely discussions, and the great variety of topics presented during the meeting. All this not withstanding a typical Dutch summer: gale-force winds, heavy cloud cover, and meter-high surf crashing onto a beach on which only the hardy ventur. ed. Most participants contented themselves by watching the lonely seagulls patrolling the North Sea coastline through the panoramic windows of the conference center. Parallel to the IRAS Conference, a Workshop on Infrared Properties of Interstellar Grains was organized by J. M. Greenberg of the Leiden Laboratory Astrophysics Group: a busy shuttling of participants between the Workshop room and the Main Conference Hall showed that many found it hard to choose. A large number of people were invol ved in making the Conference a success: in the first place the scientific organizers with their valuable advice and the conference speakers, among which I would like to mention Dr. J. H.

Book Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs

Download or read book Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs written by Lisa Randall and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Takes readers on illuminating scientific adventure, beginning sixty-six million years ago, that connects dinosaurs, comets, DNA, and the future of the planet.” —Huffington Post In this brilliant exploration of our cosmic environment, the renowned particle physicist and New York Times–bestselling author of Warped Passages and Knocking on Heaven’s Door uses her research into dark matter to illuminate the startling connections between the furthest reaches of space and life here on Earth. Sixty-six million years ago, an object the size of a city descended from space to crash into Earth, creating a devastating cataclysm that killed off the dinosaurs, along with three-quarters of the other species on the planet. What was its origin? In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, Lisa Randall proposes it was a comet that was dislodged from its orbit as the Solar System passed through a disk of dark matter embedded in the Milky Way. In a sense, it might have been dark matter that killed the dinosaurs. Working through the background and consequences of this proposal, Randall shares with us the latest findings—established and speculative—regarding the nature and role of dark matter and the origin of the Universe, our galaxy, our Solar System, and life, along with the process by which scientists explore new concepts. In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, Randall tells a breathtaking story that weaves together the cosmos’ history and our own, illuminating the deep relationships that are critical to our world and the astonishing beauty inherent in the most familiar things. “Randall has woven a beautiful account of how life on Earth is intimately connected to the cosmos.” —The Daily Telegraph (UK)

  • Author : Wouter Schmitz
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2022-12-17
  • ISBN : 3031172191
  • Pages : 421 pages

Download or read book Understanding Relativity written by Wouter Schmitz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-17 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the huge gap between popular science and mathematical treatments of Einstein's theories. It explains special and general relativity, gravity, black holes, and gravitational waves, also presenting current ideas about dark matter and dark energy. The explanations are entirely non-mathematical, using many color pictures and clear concepts. In this way, the reader is led to a much deeper understanding than any popular science book can provide. The author has written this book for everyone who wants to go beyond superficial descriptions of relativity's remarkable phenomena, but is not equipped to read the professional literature and complicated math behind the theory. By providing a complete description in terms of concepts and pictures, the book answers many questions about why the theory works as it does. For example, it explains why and how momentum and pressure are related to gravity; why and how mass causes spacetime to curve and how curvature tells objects how to move; it also reveals the origin of the ring seen around the first ever image of a black hole. Not least, the reader will learn in detail how gravitational waves are produced and measured. Since their conception, the theories of relativity have appealed to the public's imagination. Thanks to this book, readers now have the opportunity to convert their fascination with the topic to a deep understanding.

Book Stories Legends and Truths From The Blighted Earth

Download or read book Stories Legends and Truths From The Blighted Earth written by R.M. Tembreull and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-21 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Stories, Legends, and Truths from the Blighted Earth is a book of fictional narratives and artifacts which progressively knit together a hidden world existing outside what humans perceive as our reality. Earth Mother is sentient, and all manner of life on our planet are Her children to whom She gifts sentience of their own. The “spirit essence” or soul is immortal, and all beings progress through many lives. Within this context, sentient life occupies a hierarchy, where the highest tiers are occupied by elementals and Guardian Spirits who are responsible for preserving and maintaining the Natural Order; while those affiliated, coopted, and corrupted by Chaos are continuously trying to disrupt, and ultimately destroy, the balance. There is no such thing as good and evil, just the continual struggle between order and chaos. The Blighted Earth’s sentient existence, where all life on the planet is connected, reveals a hidden realm and provides a new understanding of our world through the provided stories and artifacts. These tales are described within the context of real-world events and historical conflicts as told from the perspective of various characters occupying the numerous tiers in the Hierarchy of Sentience. Many commonly understood theories of existence and spirituality are reimagined within a new model of the universe where humankind’s place, and our importance within “the All” is very different from what most of us interpret it to be, including the definition of life and lifeforms. About the Author R.M. Tembreull spent his childhood roaming the pastures and forests of rural Michigan. He was exposed to the wonders of the wilderness through a variety of experiences including camping, canoe trips, hunting, and fishing. Later, he would experience much of the world during his twenty-six years with the Air Force. His greatest appreciation for the wonders of nature began when he became a certified scuba diver while stationed in Guam. There he met the love of his life, and they began exploring the underwater world together. Tembreull found the courage and time to start writing during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The author hopes his work will ignite the reader’s imagination, instill a new appreciation of the natural world, and inspire others to act in preserving and protecting the life and natural resources of our wonderful Earth.
