Book excerpt: With the increasing numbers of research workers and groups of investigators devoting themselves to the ecology of carabids I felt that the time had come to take stock of the existing knowledge in this field and to endeavour to weld my personal results and those of other workers into a comprehensive picture. It was with these aims in mind that the following study was conceived. A further goal was to attempt to show to what extent research on carabids can contribute to the larger fields of research encompassing ecology, ethology and evolution. In my opinion the investigations on carabids permit us to draw conclusions of general applicability and, as such, comparable with those made in recent years upon other groups of animals. I am well aware of the risk involved nowadays in attempting, on one's own, to integrate results from a wide variety of scientific disciplines into a meaningful whole, and for this reason I am always grateful for corrections and for additional information. It is impossible for me to mention by name all of the col leagues who have given me their support in the preparation of the book. Reprints of their publications have been placed at my disposal by almost all of the authors cited, as well as by others whose names and works have been omitted merely in order to prevent the book from taking on encyclopedic pro portions. Book excerpt: Over the past decades, large amounts of data about carabids have been collected in the Netherlands, initially for the purpose of creating distribution maps for the country. In addition to information from collections and faunistic publications, a significant amount of data came from ecological studies using pitfall traps. Because of the rich tradition of carabidological research in the Netherlands, an exceptionally large database of these pitfall data is available. The database is a mix of approximately 1,500 short-term samples and circa 4,400 so-called 'year-samples', for which pitfalls were functional during the whole activity period of ground beetles in spring and autumn. These year-samples came from 2,850 sites, covering the period of 1953-2018, and represent all habitats on the Dutch landscape. These data offer an unusual view of the presence and activity of this common insect family. The data gathered from pitfall trapping is summarised and provides a fresh integrated perspective about the Dutch ground beetle fauna. The characteristic species composition of 17 habitat groups is described in detail. Over 320 species present in the database have been classified into six main groups, according to their patterns of habitat use. Both the classification of habitats and associated species have been tested and used in various analyses in the book. Two chapters give special attention to changes in the Dutch fauna over the past 66 years by means of extensive trend analysis and relate this understanding to nature conservation. The book provides an extension and update for Turin's (2000) atlas. The Dutch carabid fauna is discussed considering relevant literature but uses predominantly European studies to put the faunal patterns in broader context. This book presents the story of Dutch ground beetles and illustrates the contribution of pitfall trapping to our understanding of the ecology of this fascinating and unusually well-studied group of beetles.

Born in Moscow, Russia, on 24 September 1936, he developed his passion for Hymenoptera at an early age. After completing his degrees in 1960 he joined the Arthropoda Laboratory in the Paleontological Institute of the USSR (now Russian) Academy of Sciences, Moscow, and worked his way from Technician to the Head of the laboratory, in this capacityÿ leading the most productive group of paleoentomologists for 28 years. He has co-authored and edited several keystone books on insect paleontology and evolution, including History of Insects (2002), the first large-scale work of its kind in English. Rasnitsyn served as the first President of the International Palaeoentomological Society, and was bestowed Honorary Membership by the Russian Entomological Society and in 2008 with the Distinguished Research Medal of the International Society of Hymenopterists. Herein colleagues from around the world have presented original contributions to the systematics of diverse insect orders, living and fossil, as a tribute to this pioneer of Hymenoptera and paleoentomological research. Book excerpt: The Chun T'Oh Wudujut is a provincial park located in the Interior Cedar-Hemlock biogeoclimatic zone. My objective was to assess the use of carabid beetles as bioindicators of change in this unique interior temperate rain forest ecosystem. Using a combination of morphotyping and DNA barcoding, I examined the diversity of carabid beetles in three different habitat types: clear-cuts, undisturbed old growth, and disturbed old growth subject to frequent human traffic. Nineteen species of carabid were observed, with the highest diversity occurring in clear-cut sites. Carabid diversity in both old growth habitats was similar, but differed from that in the clear-cuts. Temperature and relative humidity proved more variable in clear-cut sites; this may impact carabid biodiversity, and should be measured in future bioindicative studies. Several species of carabid beetles (alone and in combination) were identified as possible bioindicators, including Scaphinotus marginatus, Trechus chalybeus, Pterostichus herculaneus, and Pterostichus riparius.

Book excerpt: Studies of diversity and species distributions are crucial in light of a predicted 4-6°C warming by the end of the 21st century, especially in the tropics where many species may be especially sensitive to climate change. Little is known about patterns of insect diversity and richness in Andean montane forest habitats. The main goal of the present research was to investigate the ecology of carabid beetles at different altitudes in southeastern Peru (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Changes in species richness, species assemblages, and wing and body attributes were estimated at different altitude zones along both disturbed and undisturbed gradients. My first objective was to estimate species richness patterns of carabid beetles on Andean slopes. Preliminary collections employed both hand collections and pitfall traps, but I found that hand collections were more efficient; subsequent data collection was carried out by hand collections. Preliminary data collected on an anthropogenically disturbed gradient from 1400 m to 3450 m revealed a decline in raw species number with altitude. When species number was adjusted for sample size (rarefaction) this trend produced a middle altitude peak in species richness. A truncated portion of the disturbed gradient (2000 m to 3450 m) was also compared to a parallel, old growth gradient, and no pattern was found with altitude for either gradient. However, overall species richness was lower for assemblages from the disturbed gradient. Species assemblages varied by altitude and by whether anthropogenic disturbance had occurred. The second objective was to characterize changes in body length and dispersal ability with altitude. For both morphological attributes, altitudinal patterns were highly variable among tribes of carabid beetles, exhibiting positive, negative and no correlation with altitude. When carabid beetle taxa were combined, however, body length and incidence of flightlessness were both significantly negatively correlated with altitude. Observation of morphological characters between the two gradients revealed that carabid beetles on an anthropogenically disturbed habitat were longer and had greater dispersal ability than those on an old growth gradient. The third objective was to compare assemblages of carabid beetles in the Andes of Peru to a temperate counterpart in the southern Appalachian Mountains, USA. Species richness of carabid beetle assemblages was found to be approximately twice as high in the Andean assemblage. Both assemblages showed a middle altitude peak in species richness. Furthermore, species composition of carabid assemblages had no overlap at the species and genus level, but species composition in both the Andes and the Appalachians varied with altitude. Body length was greater and dispersal ability was reduced for Appalachian as compared to Andean assemblages. Both regions exhibited similar patterns in body length in relation to altitude. However, while the proportion of flightless species was positively correlated with increasing altitude in the Andes, more than 90% of the species in the Appalachians were flightless at all elevations. I suggest the altitude-species richness trend may be more conclusive when a more complete altitudinal gradient is sampled, i.e., extending sampling along the entire length of the gradient. Furthermore, employing multiple study transects will enhance statistical validity of the results and greatly increase our knowledge of how carabid beetle assemblages vary along tropical altitudinal gradients.
