Book excerpt: Capturing Freedom’s Cry—a translation of I’tikal Lahzah Haribah (Capturing a Fleeting Moment), 1979—is a poetry collection written in Beirut by Ghada Samman during the early years of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990). The poems are set in the violent and destructive environment of this time. They are voiced by female narrators who, in addition to living amid the dangers and horrors of the War itself, engage in a necessary and deeply personal cultural struggle for freedom in a society where patriarchy and oppressive gender roles are the norm. In particular, the female narrators assert their personal power and right to sexual freedom and love. Samman’s advocacy for women’s autonomy and sexual equality, particularly in traditional Arab cultures, is courageous. In exposing the socio-political strife and cultural disparity that oppresses women, Samman demonstrates her conviction that the freedom of the nation and women’s liberation from patriarchal oppression are inseparable.

Book The 101st Pennsylvania in the Civil War Its Capture and POW Experience

Download or read book The 101st Pennsylvania in the Civil War Its Capture and POW Experience written by Harold B. Birch and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder echoes off the rugged peaks of the Cutthroat Mountains in the Pacific Northwest and shatters the complacency of guests at Slate Creek Lodge. For one of those guests the death of a colleague brings the emptiness of his own life into sharp relief. As far as Donald McLure can see trading the life of a forensic pathologist in Scotland for that of an academic in the USA has been a mistake. Despite the outward appearance of success he feels unfulfilled. He doesn't belong in this country. His work is esoteric. His wife spends increasing amounts of time abroad and is even more distant when she is at home. The only accomplishments that give him any comfort are the security and happiness of his three kids. Although excluded from the official investigation, Donald is fascinated by the details of this ruthlessly planned murder. When his son's ex-girlfriend is accused of the crime he launches himself on a quest to exonerate the young woman. Following threads and inconsistencies that the police are ignoring he encounters evasion and half truths from the dead man's colleagues in Seattle and hostility from the residents of Slate Creek Valley. Beneath the tranquil veneer of rural life Donald encounters people more interested in a twenty-year-old murder that rocked the community than in this recent murder of an outsider. A family of faded aristocrats clings to the myths of bygone times. A bitter and twisted artist paints hostile pictures to offend the tourists. From the tightly wound innkeeper to a nest of anti-government zealots Donald's probing uncovers more about the old murder than the one he set out to solve. Goaded by a collusion of deceit he stumbles into mortal danger, confronts the killer, and faces up to the realities of his own life.

That is the chilling legacy of the ISIS onslaught, and Only Cry for the Living takes a profoundly personal, unprecedented dive into one of the most brutal terrorist organizations in the world. Journalist Hollie S. McKay offers a raw, on-the-ground journey chronicling the rise of ISIS in Iraq—exposing the group’s vast impact and how and why it sought to wage terror on civilians in a desperate attempt to create an antiquated “caliphate.”

Book excerpt: With the 1st Marine Division in Iraq, 2003: No Greater Friend, No Worse Enemy"The events chronicled here capture the story of the Marines of the "Blue Diamond" as they prepared for war, conquered and army, and liberated a nation. From across America and beyond, they chose the demanding path, to become Marines. These Marines marched in the ranks of this national treasure that we call the 1st Marine Division. And, at a time when timid souls or cynical pundits grew loudest, these men shouldered their weapons and moved without hesitation against the enemy. Our victory was not inevitable. It was the courage, unselfishness, and skill of the young men of Blue Diamond to whom we owe our victory."

Book Battle Cry of Freedom

    Book Details:
  • Author : James M. McPherson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2003-12-11
  • ISBN : 0199726582
  • Pages : 946 pages

Download or read book Battle Cry of Freedom written by James M. McPherson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-11 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filled with fresh interpretations and information, puncturing old myths and challenging new ones, Battle Cry of Freedom will unquestionably become the standard one-volume history of the Civil War. James McPherson's fast-paced narrative fully integrates the political, social, and military events that crowded the two decades from the outbreak of one war in Mexico to the ending of another at Appomattox. Packed with drama and analytical insight, the book vividly recounts the momentous episodes that preceded the Civil War--the Dred Scott decision, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry--and then moves into a masterful chronicle of the war itself--the battles, the strategic maneuvering on both sides, the politics, and the personalities. Particularly notable are McPherson's new views on such matters as the slavery expansion issue in the 1850s, the origins of the Republican Party, the causes of secession, internal dissent and anti-war opposition in the North and the South, and the reasons for the Union's victory. The book's title refers to the sentiments that informed both the Northern and Southern views of the conflict: the South seceded in the name of that freedom of self-determination and self-government for which their fathers had fought in 1776, while the North stood fast in defense of the Union founded by those fathers as the bulwark of American liberty. Eventually, the North had to grapple with the underlying cause of the war--slavery--and adopt a policy of emancipation as a second war aim. This "new birth of freedom," as Lincoln called it, constitutes the proudest legacy of America's bloodiest conflict. This authoritative volume makes sense of that vast and confusing "second American Revolution" we call the Civil War, a war that transformed a nation and expanded our heritage of liberty.

This book locates him, as it is clear in his body of work, in the Azanian (Black and Indigenous) existential tradition. As a philosopher, he is engaged from the perspective of black radical thought. From this intervention, it is clear that his philosophical project originates and is expressed from the existential condition of being-black-in-an-antiblack-world. It is from the lived experience and the fact of being black that More is meditated upon and this book, which is the extension of his work, brings to the forth the ways of thinking, knowing, and doing that that illuminate his philosophical project.

Book The Greatest Trials I Ever Had

Download or read book The Greatest Trials I Ever Had written by Ryan W. Keating and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection of Civil War correspondence between Col. Thomas Cahill and his wife, Margaret, offers a rare glimpse into the symbiotic relationship between soldiers and their home communities. In the only substantial extant collection of letters from an Irish American woman on the northern home front, Margaret’s pivotal role as a go-between in the financial affairs of men in the regiment and their wives is made evident, as is the broader interplay between the community of New Haven, Connecticut, and the regiment. The couple’s correspondence was nearly constant in their four years apart. There is an inherent intimacy in the way that daily life during the Civil War is documented and in particular in the gradual revelation of the emotional toll taken by a long-distance relationship. Because the volume includes letters from both Cahill and his wife, the interplay between the regiment and the home front is traced in a way most collections are not able to achieve. This lively correspondence provides a great introduction to primary source reading for students of the Civil War home front. These teaching opportunities will supplemented by a companion website that features more correspondence, maps, and additional learning materials.
