Book Race Class and Politics in the Cappuccino City

Download or read book Race Class and Politics in the Cappuccino City written by Derek S. Hyra and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For long-time residents of Washington, DC’s Shaw/U Street, the neighborhood has become almost unrecognizable in recent years. Where the city’s most infamous open-air drug market once stood, a farmers’ market now sells grass-fed beef and homemade duck egg ravioli. On the corner where AM.PM carryout used to dish out soul food, a new establishment markets its $28 foie gras burger. Shaw is experiencing a dramatic transformation, from “ghetto” to “gilded ghetto,” where white newcomers are rehabbing homes, developing dog parks, and paving the way for a third wave coffee shop on nearly every block. Race, Class, and Politics in the Cappuccino City is an in-depth ethnography of this gilded ghetto. Derek S. Hyra captures here a quickly gentrifying space in which long-time black residents are joined, and variously displaced, by an influx of young, white, relatively wealthy, and/or gay professionals who, in part as a result of global economic forces and the recent development of central business districts, have returned to the cities earlier generations fled decades ago. As a result, America is witnessing the emergence of what Hyra calls “cappuccino cities.” A cappuccino has essentially the same ingredients as a cup of coffee with milk, but is considered upscale, and is double the price. In Hyra’s cappuccino city, the black inner-city neighborhood undergoes enormous transformations and becomes racially “lighter” and more expensive by the year.

His cooking at a top London restaurant has been equally mocked ('the sausage on my plate could have been a turd') and celebrated (will he be the nation's first celebrity offal chef?). Frustrated, disappointed and undersexed, Adrian despairs until a letter from his past changes everything . . . 'With the Mole books, Townsend has an unrivalled claim to be this country's foremost practising comic novelist' Mail on Sunday 'Adrian Mole really is a brilliant comic creation. Every sentence is witty and well thought out, and the whole has reverberations beyond itself' The Times 'One of the greatest comic creations. I can't remember a more relentlessly funny book' Daily Mirror 'Three cheers for Mole's chaotic, non-achieving, dysfunctional family. We need him' Evening Standard

Book The Cappuccino Club at Jacob s Well

Download or read book The Cappuccino Club at Jacob s Well written by Ron Willis and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newspapers evolve as societal norms shift. The same is true for newspapermen. Former journalists Charlie Benskin, now a private detective, and Bill Proude, now a marketing consultant, meet by chance in York more than two decades after working together. Their life experiences have twisted and spun them in distinct directions as their dreams, relationships, and interests took them down two separate, circuitous roads. What is the common thread that binds these two together? The Cappuccino Club at a caf called Jacob's Well. A writers' group named The Cappuccino Club may sound innocent enough, but when author Ron Willis weaves a bottle fight, suicide, and a train crash into the story line, what was once considered harmless turns dangerous and riveting. A killing spree aimed at women aged 99 turns The Cappuccino Club at Jacob's Well into a page-turner that grasps and holds its readers' attention until the stunning final line. Author Ron Willis has been writing since he was seven years old. His talent piloted him to a successful career as a newspaperman, and now as a novelist. His first book, Cricket's Biggest Mystery: The Ashes, fascinated its readers with explanations of the greatest mystery surrounding the cricket rivalry between England and Australia. Look forward to a Charlie Benskin trilogy that will be full of continuing private-eye intrigue, set in England and Western Australia. Book excerpt: Every damn thing in Callie Hamasaki’s life is gone in a puff of smoke. With nowhere else to turn, she sublets a friend’s apartment, desperate to rebuild her career one canvas at a time. And if her best friend’s brother would stop intruding on her with his dictates, she’d unstick and unlock a way forward. Did she ask Abraham Wells for his help? Not even a little. But he’s giving it anyway, because helping is all he’s good for. He takes care of people, and so what? No one else complains with over-the-top insults and pointed comments about him acting like a martyr. Only Callie, with her sass and her talent and the way her hips move when she dances. She could paint a mural full of all Abraham doesn’t know about how he’s messing up his own life. But if he’s going to keep griping at her, why would she bother telling him? After all, baring their truths could leave them stripped down to nothing but the attraction between them, and that’s—probably—not worth the risk.
