Book Capitalism and Class Struggle in the USSR

Download or read book Capitalism and Class Struggle in the USSR written by Neil C. Fernandez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this was the first Autonomist Marxist book on the USSR. The various theories of Soviet capitalism are considered more comprehensively than in any previous work, and are shown to be inadequate insofar as they fail to demonstrate satisfactorily the predominance of the category of capital. A powerful new theory is developed which does precisely this, introducing the concepts of bureaucratic forms of both exchange-value and money. This constitutes an important contribution to the overall theoretical critique of capital. Attention is then turned to the class struggle. For the first time, the various ’Marxist’ theories of the USSR are systematically considered in relation to what they say about the working class and its struggle.

Book Russia and the Long Transition from Capitalism to Socialism

Download or read book Russia and the Long Transition from Capitalism to Socialism written by Samir Amin and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of early twentieth-century Russia came the world’s first significant effort to build a modern revolutionary society. According to Marxist economist Samir Amin, the great upheaval that once produced the Soviet Union has also produced a movement away from capitalism – a long transition that continues even today. In seven concise, provocative chapters, Amin deftly examines the trajectory of Russian capitalism, the Bolshevik Revolution, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the possible future of Russia – and, by extension, the future of socialism itself. Amin manages to combine an analysis of class struggle with geopolitics – each crucial to understanding Russia’s singular and complex political history. He first looks at the development (or lack thereof) of Russian capitalism. He sees Russia’s geopolitical isolation as the reason its capitalist empire developed so differently from Western Europe, and the reason for Russia’s perceived “backwardness.” Yet Russia’s unique capitalism proved to be the rich soil in which the Bolsheviks were able to take power, and Amin covers the rise and fall of the revolutionary Soviet system. Finally, in a powerful chapter on Ukraine and the rise of global fascism, Amin lays out the conditions necessary for Russia to recreate itself, and perhaps again move down the long road to socialism. Samir Amin’s great achievement in this book is not only to explain Russia’s historical tragedies and triumphs, but also to temper our hopes for a quick end to an increasingly insufferable capitalism. This book offers a cornucopia of food for thought, as well as an enlightening means to transcend reductionist arguments about “revolution” so common on the left. Samir Amin’s book – and the actions that could spring from it – are more necessary than ever, if the world is to avoid the barbarism toward which capitalism is hurling humanity.

Book Socialism and Capitalism Through the Eyes of a Soviet migr

Download or read book Socialism and Capitalism Through the Eyes of a Soviet migr written by Svetlana Kunin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in the 1950-60s, a period defined by Soviet leaders as time of “developed socialism", Svetlana believed in the greatness of socialism: fairness, equality and the benevolence of the communist leaders managing society’s march toward progress. Gradually, disillusion set in as historical and contemporary events exposed the true reality behind the veil of empty words. The decision to immigrate wasn’t easy. Parents, relatives, and friends were left behind. Then, in 1980, came the unexpected discovery of a new life in capitalist USA. This unusually personal story that starts in the Soviet Union and ends in the United States draws parallels between two economic and political systems and provides a missing perspective and commentary on parallels to life in the USA. In this book Svetlana makes the case for how a free market economy in the USA leads to a dramatically better life for a common person, than that of powerful centralized government as she experienced living in both the USA and the former USSR. Many articles that the author published in the Investor’s Business Daily under “IBD Exclusive Commentary Series: Perspectives of a Russian Immigrant” are poignantly relevant today. They are included in the book with IBD’s permission.

Book Class War Conservatism

Download or read book Class War Conservatism written by Ralph Miliband and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, in 2013, the Daily Mail labeled Ralph Miliband “The Man Who Hated Britain,” a diverse host rallied to his defense. Those who had worked with him – from both left and right – praised his work and character. He was lauded as “one of the best-known academic Marxists of his generation” and a leading figure of the New Left. Class War Conservatism collects together his most significant political essays and shows the scope and brilliance of his thinking. Ranging from the critical anatomy of capitalism to a clear-eyed analysis of the future of socialism in Britain, this selection shows Miliband as an independent and prescient thinker of great insight. Throughout, his writing is a passionate and forcefully argued demand for social justice and a better future.
