Book Canadian Immigration

Download or read book Canadian Immigration written by James Ted McDonald and published by McGill Queens University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social issues regarding immigration are at the forefront of the Canadian policy agenda. Given the marked decline in immigrants' labour market outcomes over the past few decades and the important changes in the policy environment, expanding the evidence base for new immigration and integration policy is crucial. This volume of essays extends and updates our understanding of economic and closely related social factors regarding immigration. Each chapter is an empirical investigation, with topics addressing labour market integration, including ethnic and gender aspects; immigrant economic returns to schooling; employment and self-employment; the skilled worker program; temporary foreign workers; housing; an international comparison of immigrant children's success in school; fertility; and health. "What makes this book special is that it focuses on research that can be used to inform policy, drawing on the latest research using Canadian data by a group of top-notch economists from Canada and around the world. The result is a great collection of papers that brings state-of-the-art empirical techniques and the latest data together to shed light on the most important policy challenges related to immigration." Krishna Pendakur, Professor of Economics, Simon Fraser University, and Co-Director, Metropolis British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Research on Immigration and Diversity "Canadian Immigration is an eye opener for US policy-makers and scholars of US immigration. Its relevance to US immigration policy debates is clear, both because of the similarity of the challenges facing Canadian and American immigration policy-makers and because of the authors' adept use of U.S.-Canadian comparisons to highlight policy effects. Moreover, it extends an analytical eye to areas of immigrant integration vital to ongoing immigration debates, yet rarely the focus of scholarly attention." Harriet O. Duleep, Professor, School of Public Policy, William and Mary College

Emphasizing the importance of social networks, communication, and the symbolic and material exchanges that strengthen communities, social capital has been the subject of an expansive body of literature. Social Capital, Diversity, and the Welfare State represents a landmark consideration of the diverse meanings, causal foundations, and positive and negative consequences of social capital, with a particular focus on its role in mitigating or enhancing social inequalities. The chapters, written by economists, political scientists, and sociologists, address a range of empirical and theoretical issues. This book is cutting-edge addition to the field that offers fresh insights into the conceptualization, operation, sources, and consequences of social capital in Canadian society.

  • Author : Larissa Remennick
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-06-11
  • ISBN : 1317977688
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Russian Israelis written by Larissa Remennick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israelis with a Russian accent have been part of Israel's social, cultural and economic landscape for over 20 years. They are found in all walks of life: as controversial politicians, senior physicians and scientists, kibbutz members and religious settlers. Despite lacking personal assets and below-average income, many of them managed to enter Israeli middle class, and some even became part of local elites – an achievement not to be taken for granted for the first-generation immigrants. This collection offers a multi-faceted portrait of the 'Great Russian Aliyah' of the 1990s with the emphasis on socio-political and cultural aspects of its insertion in Israel – based on social research conducted by the scholars most of whom are former-Soviet immigrants themselves. The issues covered include the exploration of Israel as an extension of the post-soviet space; the evolving political culture of Russian Israelis; the prospects for the ethnic media and Russian language continuity; visual tokens of 'domestication' of a major Israeli city by its 'Russian' residents, and mutual influences between Israeli and Russian cinematic traditions. Written in a lively and non-technical manner, most contributions will spark interest among both social scientists and broad readership interested in modern-day Israel and post-Soviet societies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Israel Affairs.

Book Mobilities of the Highly Skilled towards Switzerland

Download or read book Mobilities of the Highly Skilled towards Switzerland written by Laure Sandoz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses the strategies of migration intermediaries from the public and private sectors in Switzerland to select, attract, and retain highly skilled migrants who represent value to them. It reveals how state and economic actors define “wanted immigrants” and provide them with privileged access to the Swiss territory and labour market. The analysis draws on an ethnographic study conducted in the French-speaking Lake Geneva area and the German-speaking northwestern region of Switzerland between 2014 and 2018. It shows how institutional actors influence which resources are available to different groups of newcomers by defining and dividing migrants according to constructed social categories that correlate with specific status and privileges. This research thus shifts the focus from an approach that takes the category of highly skilled migrant for granted to one that regards context as crucial for structuring migrants’ characteristics, trajectories, and experiences. Beyond consideration of professional qualifications, the ways decision-makers perceive candidates and shape their resource environments are crucial for constructing them as skilled or unskilled, wanted or unwanted, welcome or unwelcome.

Book Community Rights and Corporate Responsibility

Download or read book Community Rights and Corporate Responsibility written by Liisa North and published by Between The Lines. This book was released on 2006 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian mining activity in Latin America has exploded over the past decade and a half. Investors have responded to neoliberal policies of deregulation, privatization, state-downsizing, and export promotion encouraged by leading capitalist nations and international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The result, predictably, has been sharp conflicts between the communities affected by mining and their advocates on one side, and the transnational mining companies supported by the local state and the Canadian government on the other. This collection, the most comprehensive in the English-language to date, investigates these conflicts in Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Contributors address the related sustainable development, community, corporate, legal, and social issues. A valuable contribution to Latin American development studies, this collection will prove of interest to students and specialists in the field, journalists, NGOs, and policymakers.
