Book Capital Movements and Corporate Dominance in Latin America

Download or read book Capital Movements and Corporate Dominance in Latin America written by Noemi Levy-Orlik and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problems of Latin America, through two of the most important features of the post-Bretton Woods economic order, large corporations and weak financial markets. In turn, it shows that their impact on economic growth and development is feeble and short-lived. This resulted in income concentration and an extremely unequal distribution of wealth in the region.

Book International Capital Movements

Download or read book International Capital Movements written by Charles P. Kindleberger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-06-24 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, this study of international capital movements looks at their historical role in the financing of trade and their dramatically increased role in the world economy in recent years. It examines the current economic theory and the policy implications of these changes. Beginning with an analysis of the balance of payments, the authors goes on to discuss international short-term and long-term capital movements, both historically and with reference to current events. A further chapter deals with financial deregulation and the progression during the last few years towards the integration of international capital markets. The author looks forward to two possible futures for international finance: a gradual federalisation of macro-economic behaviour on a world basis, or a move towards self-reliance and autarky. The book is based on the author's Marshall Lectures, given in the University of Cambridge. It will be of interest to those studying international and financial economies, graduate students and those involved in the formulation of policy.

Book The Liberalization of Capital Movements in Europe

Download or read book The Liberalization of Capital Movements in Europe written by Age F.P. Bakker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The member states are facing the choice between either reaping the benefits of increasing integration in a certain area - in this case the capital markets - attended by a significant reduction in national powers of autonomous decision-making and independence, or retaining this national independence enabling them to pursue their own policy objectives with the aid of instruments selected at their discretion. To this question, there is no generally valid answer. The solution is determined by the weight assigned to the benefits, on the one hand, and that assigned to the reduction in national sovereignty, on the other. This, however, is a subjective matter, which is assessed differently in the various countries. OnnoRuding, 1969 1. 1 CAPITAL LffiERALIZATION AND MONETARY UNIFICATION In the 1980s Europe made a leap forward towards the liberalization of capital movements. EEC directives were accepted by all member states obliging them to abolish all remaining exchange controls. This common objective of freedom of capital movements has been consolidated in the Treaty on European Union. Nowadays virtually all restrictions have been lifted. This stands in striking contrast to the state of affairs only a decade ago, when many countries still operated a tight regime. Although the Treaty of Rome provided for the freedom of capital movements, this objective was circumscribed by the clause that such liberalization should only be carried through to the extent necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the Common Market.

Book International Capital Flows

Download or read book International Capital Flows written by Martin Feldstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent changes in technology, along with the opening up of many regions previously closed to investment, have led to explosive growth in the international movement of capital. Flows from foreign direct investment and debt and equity financing can bring countries substantial gains by augmenting local savings and by improving technology and incentives. Investing companies acquire market access, lower cost inputs, and opportunities for profitable introductions of production methods in the countries where they invest. But, as was underscored recently by the economic and financial crises in several Asian countries, capital flows can also bring risks. Although there is no simple explanation of the currency crisis in Asia, it is clear that fixed exchange rates and chronic deficits increased the likelihood of a breakdown. Similarly, during the 1970s, the United States and other industrial countries loaned OPEC surpluses to borrowers in Latin America. But when the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates to control soaring inflation, the result was a widespread debt moratorium in Latin America as many countries throughout the region struggled to pay the high interest on their foreign loans. International Capital Flows contains recent work by eminent scholars and practitioners on the experience of capital flows to Latin America, Asia, and eastern Europe. These papers discuss the role of banks, equity markets, and foreign direct investment in international capital flows, and the risks that investors and others face with these transactions. By focusing on capital flows' productivity and determinants, and the policy issues they raise, this collection is a valuable resource for economists, policymakers, and financial market participants.

Book Long Term International Capital Movements and Technology

Download or read book Long Term International Capital Movements and Technology written by Mr.Harm Zebregs and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the theoretical literature on the question of how long-term international capital movements depend on the international distribution of technology. It focuses on long-term investment flows, as these are more affected by international differences in technologies than short-term financial flows. International capital movements are investigated in the context of various technology specifications, ranging from models with only one common technology to those with multiple and endogenous technologies. The paper demonstrates that the theoretical specification of technology is crucial to the prediction of the size and direction of international capital movements.

Book excerpt: International financial integration allows countries to become net creditors or net debtors with respect to the rest of the world. In this paper, we show that a small set of fundamentals--shifts in relative output levels, the stock of public debt and demographic factors--can do much to explain the evolution of net foreign asset positions. In addition, we highlight that external wealth' plays a critical role in determining the behavior of the trade balance, both through shifts in the desired net foreign asset position and the investment returns generated on the outstanding stock of net foreign assets. Finally, we provide some evidence that a portfolio balance effect exists: real interest rate differentials are inversely related to net foreign asset positions.

This book was released on 2005-03-30 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the potential gains and risks of open capital markets by first looking at what classical economic theory suggests aboutthe benefits of capital mobility and then examining the counterargumentsarising from problems of incomplete information and other distortions. It shows that the risks of removing controls on flows of capital acrossnational borders are similar to those associated with removing controlson domestic financial institutions. The paper then explores how to manageliberalization to minimize the risks and maximize the benefits.
