Book Capital beyond Borders

Download or read book Capital beyond Borders written by Kenneth P. Thomas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the established wisdom regarding the balance of bargaining power between multinational corporations and host governments. Most theories, beginning with Raymond Vernon's, claim that the bargaining power of host states should increase over time. This work shows the opposite is true, at least for the automobile industry in the industrialized world. The reason for this is the growing mobility of production, which undercuts host states' bargaining positions. Capital mobility is thus central to both firm-state relations and IPE generally.

This book was released on 2022-05-13T22:59:00Z with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The history of wealth management shows that the profession has evolved from amateurs to a profession that impacts contemporary global politics and finance. However, this study shows that professionals have not replaced social trusteeship with the pursuit of profit; rather, they coexist in uneasy tension with one another. #2 The work of wealth managers is governed by an aristocratic code based on service, loyalty, and honor. They defend large concentrations of wealth from attack by outsiders. #3 The practice of trusteeship, which is the transfer of title to an adult male friend or relative while the original landowner is still alive, was developed to solve the problems of land seizures and taxes. It was a method of applying two forms of ownership to a single property. #4 The system of trusts, which was in place in England, America, and other common-law countries, allowed elites to preserve their wealth by transferring it into trust. This was done by evading the laws that threatened to dissipate dynastic wealth.

Book excerpt: As educational attainment grows increasingly more essential to individual and societal prosperity and simultaneously more expensive, policymakers' appetite for evidence of the return on the investment in a college education has swelled and they increasingly want to equip prospective college students and their families with concrete information about the likelihood of graduating and obtaining a reasonably well-paying job. It is against this backdrop that the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), embarked on a pilot project to develop a "Multistate Longitudinal Data Exchange (MLDE)." This effort was aimed at building a resource able to track how human capital develops and becomes mobile across a multistate region, and at given states, for their use in policy and program improvement, access to data that go missing from individual state databases whenever individuals cross state lines. Spanning individual-level data covering K-12 education, postsecondary education, and workforce information systems in four initial states (Hawai'i, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington) the pilot sought to determine whether a MLDE could serve as such a resource and, if so, how it could be built. This report describes how this project progressed, presents analytical results from a combined dataset of students who completed high school and started college in any of the four states, discusses the implications of those results, and offers lessons applicable to ongoing efforts to build and use longitudinal data systems for policy and practice. The report includes the appendix: Memorandum of Agreement Between WICHE and the Washington Education Research and Data Center (ERDC).

Book Redefining Global Strategy with a New Preface

Download or read book Redefining Global Strategy with a New Preface written by Pankaj Ghemawat and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Tools for Succeeding Globally Why do so many global strategies fail--despite companies' powerful brands and other border-crossing advantages? Because a one-size-fits-all strategy no longer stands a chance. When firms believe in the illusions of a "flat" world and the death of distance, they charge across borders as if the globe were one seamless marketplace. But cross-border differences are larger than we assume. Most economic activity--including trade, real and financial investment, tourism, and communication--happens locally, not internationally. In this "semiglobalized" approach, companies can cross borders more profitably by basing their strategies on the geopolitical differences that matter; they must identify the barriers their strategies will have to overcome, and they must build bridges to cross those barriers. Based on rigorous research, Pankaj Ghemawat shows how to create successful strategies and provides practical management tools so you can: Assess the cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic differences between regions at the industry level--and decide which ones require attention Track the implications of the specific border-crossing actions that will impact your company's ability to create value the most Generate superior performance through strategies that are optimized for the three A's: adaptation (adjusting to differences), aggregation (overcoming differences), and arbitrage (exploiting differences) Using in-depth examples, Ghemawat reveals how companies such as Cemex, Toyota, Procter & Gamble, Tata Consultancy Services, IBM, and GE Healthcare are adroitly managing cross-border differences. He also shares examples of other well-known companies that have failed at this challenge. Crucial for any business competing across borders, Redefining Global Strategy will help you make the most of our semiglobalized world.

Book Cross Border Venture Capital Flows and Local Ties

Download or read book Cross Border Venture Capital Flows and Local Ties written by Tereza Tykvova and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a unique global dataset from developed countries, this paper provides evidence that not only traditional determinants of international capital flows affect cross-border venture capital flows, but that ties among local venture capital investors are related to size and style of these flows. Our results on size indicate that both number and value of cross-border flows between two countries increase with tie intensities within the local venture capital industries in both countries. Our results on style suggest that strong local ties go hand in hand with more intensive ties to foreign investors. Thus, rather than protecting the local market and fending off competition from foreign investors, local tie intensity seems to stimulate international syndication and expansion of venture capital financing across borders, which allows venture capital investors to build geographically diversified portfolios and to add value by building cross-border syndicates. These effects seem to be stronger for those foreign investors who already have experience in the particular destination country.

Download or read book Cities Beyond Borders written by Dr Nicolas Kenny and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a body of research covering primarily Europe and the Americas, but stretching also to Asia and Africa, from the mid-eighteenth century to the present, this book explores the methodological and heuristic implications of studying cities in relation to one another. Moving fluidly between comparative and transnational methods, as well as across regional and national lines, the contributors to this volume demonstrate the necessity of this broader view in assessing not just the fundamentals of urban life, the way cities are occupied and organised on a daily basis, but also the urban mindscape, the way cities are imagined and represented. In doing so the volume provides valuable insights into the advantages and limitations of using multiple cities to form historical inquiries.
