Book First Seventeen Years

Download or read book First Seventeen Years written by Charles E. Hatch and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A permanent settlement was the objective. Support, financial and popular, came from a cross section of English life. It seems obvious from accounts and papers of the period that it was generally thought that Virginia was being settled for the glory of God, for the honor of the King, for the welfare of England, and for the advancement of the Company and its individual members.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England in Colonial Virginia, Vol. 1: 1607 1619 On the 26th of April, 1607, the settlers arrived at a cape, which they named Cape Henry in honour of the Prince of Wales, the eldest son of King James the First. A cross was planted there. Then the expedition sailed into Chesapeake Bay and up the James River. On the 13th of May, the site for Jamestown was chosen; and the ships were made fast to the trees. The next day, the travellers unloaded. Both gentlemen and labourers felled trees to make a clearing for the fort. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 26, 1607, the English colonists anchored at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay and came ashore to the historic piece of land they named Cape Henry. Then, in 1917, a military post was established and fortified to protect the southern portion of the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay during World War I; it was named Fort Story. Expanded and heavily fortified to meet the demands of the Second World War, the post served as a principal installation for the Harbor Defenses of Chesapeake Bay. The big guns fell silent after that conflict, and the post became the Home of Army Amphibians with over-the-beach operations. Today Fort Story continues to provide a superb training installation for the Army Transportation Corps and Special Operations.

Book Love and Hate in Jamestown

Download or read book Love and Hate in Jamestown written by David A. Price and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book and aSan Jose Mercury News Top 20 Nonfiction Book of 2003In 1606, approximately 105 British colonists sailed to America, seeking gold and a trade route to the Pacific. Instead, they found disease, hunger, and hostile natives. Ill prepared for such hardship, the men responded with incompetence and infighting; only the leadership of Captain John Smith averted doom for the first permanent English settlement in the New World. The Jamestown colony is one of the great survival stories of American history, and this book brings it fully to life for the first time. Drawing on extensive original documents, David A. Price paints intimate portraits of the major figures from the formidable monarch Chief Powhatan, to the resourceful but unpopular leader John Smith, to the spirited Pocahontas, who twice saved Smith’s life. He also gives a rare balanced view of relations between the settlers and the natives and debunks popular myths about the colony. This is a superb work of history, reminding us of the horrors and heroism that marked the dawning of our nation.

Book excerpt: No state can claim a longer history of experimenting with and promoting viticulture than Virginia--nor does any state's history demonstrate a more astounding record of initial failure and ultimate success. An essential addition to any wine lover's library, Virginia Wine: Four Centuries of Change presents a comprehensive record of the Virginia wine industry, from the earliest Spanish accounts describing Native American vineyards in 1570 through its astonishing rebirth in the modern era.Grape cultivation--for agriculture, horticultural curiosity, and wine production--has absorbed ambitious Virginians since April 1607, when a few casks of European wine washed ashore onto the dunes of Cape Henry in the company of a band of travel-weary English settlers. Andrew Painter chronicles the dynamic personalities, diverse places, and engrossing personal and political struggles that have established the Old Dominion as one of the nation's preeminent wine regions. Virginia's wine industry now accounts for nearly $1 billion in annual sales, with more than 275 wineries growing more than thirty varieties of grapes. The author discusses a multitude of wine-industry trends, events, secondary industries, and jobs that have revolved around the growing of grapes and the making and promotion of wine. This is the definitive look at Virginia's wine history and culture, in an agricultural and industrial sector that is itself unique within world commerce and society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "New Discoveries at Jamestown: Site of the First Successful English Settlement in America" by John L. Cotter and J. Paul Hudson Jamestown has always been a site of much history and intrigue for the United States of America, as one of the first settlements in the new world. After the town had been, for all intents and purposes, abandoned, many of the artifacts were forgotten until historians began to dig for them to reconstruct the lives and genealogical trees of those who once inhabited it.
