Download or read book Dangerous Intercourse written by Tessa Winkelmann and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dangerous Intercourse, Tessa Winkelmann examines interracial social and sexual contact between Americans and Filipinos in the early twentieth century via a wide range of relationships—from the casual and economic to the formal and long term. Winkelmann argues that such intercourse was foundational not only to the colonization of the Philippines but also to the longer, uneven history between the two nations. Although some relationships between Filipinos and Americans served as demonstrations of US "benevolence," too-close sexual relations also threatened social hierarchies and the so-called civilizing mission. For the Filipino, Indigenous, Moro, Chinese, and other local populations, intercourse offered opportunities to negotiate and challenge empire, though these opportunities often came at a high cost for those most vulnerable. Drawing on a multilingual array of primary sources, Dangerous Intercourse highlights that sexual relationships enabled US authorities to police white and nonwhite bodies alike, define racial and national boundaries, and solidify colonial rule throughout the archipelago. The dangerous ideas about sexuality and Filipina women created and shaped by US imperialists of the early twentieth century remain at the core of contemporary American notions of the island nation and indeed, of Asian and Asian American women more generally.

Book excerpt: The story of a man who began his journey with Rs 10,000 and built a Rs 17,000-crore empire From beginning his career as a small trader in Delhi to building Havells, one of India’s largest electrical goods company, Qimat Rai Gupta’s story makes for an inspiring read. Told rivetingly by his son, Anil Rai Gupta, this is the account of how QRG, as he was fondly known, braved poverty, ill health, competition, corruption and bureaucracy to turn his dreams into reality. Havells faced stiff competition from companies that couldn’t tolerate a modest trader challenging them. Despite legal battles, family feuds and severe shortage of funds, QRG never gave up. During his last years, Havells acquired German giant Sylvania which was twice its size. When Sylvania’s losses pushed Havells to the brink, QRG fearlessly decided to keep the company nonetheless. It was under his tutelage that Anil Rai Gupta, present chairman of Havells, turned Sylvania around. QRG’s life is proof of the adage ‘Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author’s military sci-fi saga continues as the fate a remote planet decides the future of the Confederacy. Second Lt. Antonio Santana was considered a hero—until he refused an order to fire on unarmed civilians. Now stripped of his rank, he’s been posted to the isolated planet of LaNor. Since its discovery, LaNor has attracted attention from all corners of the still-precarious Confederacy of Sentient Beings—all with an eye to exploiting its location and natural resources. As for the native LaNorians, little concern is paid to them except as a steady supply of cheap labor. But now, led by their empress, the LaNorians are ready to launch a rebellion. Taken by surprise and suddenly surrounded, the competing interests must band together for survival. It is an unlikely alliance held together by Santana’s courage and the diplomatic prowess of his sometime lover Christine Vanderveen. Even as the Legion and its newfound allies struggle to fend off the LaNorians, Santana begins to suspect that they all may be pawns in a much greater and deadlier campaign. Someone else is behind the uprising. And their true objective is to spread the chaos of war far beyond LaNor . . . “[An] elaborate military-political thriller . . . Dietz has created an intricate tapestry of local and star-faring culture with topnotch action sequences.” —Publishers Weekly
