Book End to End

Download or read book End to End written by Pam Agar and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over 6km in length and 266ha in area, the Canning River Regional Park varies from Eucalypt woodland bordering a billabong and a stretch of fresh-water river at one end to shallow reed and paperbark fringed tidal stretches at the other. From one end of the year to the there there are also subtle changes in the landscape, plants and birds, as well as on-going work within the park to maintain both natural and developed areas and to address current problems. If you have ever wondered why the riverine habitat varies so much, whether plants are local or introduced, when the kingfishers arrive or how the area was used in the early days, this book will help to broaden your knowledge. On one level, it is a celebration of the seasonal details of a unique natural environment, which is listed on the Register of the National Estate. Despite the proximity of the park to the hustle and bustle of suburbia, there is still much to be discovered by any patient observer who chooses to spend time wandering along the walk trials within the regional park." - back cover.

Book Management and Ecology of Freshwater Plants

Download or read book Management and Ecology of Freshwater Plants written by Joseph Caffrey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need for appropriate management of aquatic plants in rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, and drainage channels and urban waterways. This management must be based on a sound knowledge of the ecology of freshwater plants, their distribution and the different forms of control available including chemical, physical, biological and biomanipulation. This series of papers from over 20 different countries was generated from the highly successful European Weed Research Society symposia on aquatic plant management, this being the ninth. The contributions provide a valuable insight into the complexities involved in managing aquatic systems, discuss state-of-the-art control techniques such as biomanipulation using fish and waterfowl and the use of straw, and deal with patterns of regrowth and recovery post-management. Careful consideration is given to the use of chemicals, a practice which has come under scrutiny in recent years. Underpinning the development of such control techniques is a growing body of knowledge relating to the biology and ecology of water plants, including growth responses under different trophic conditions, the impact of pollution, and aspects of photosynthesis. The authorship of the papers represents the collective wisdom of leading scientists and experts from fisheries agencies, river authorities, nature conservation agencies, the agrochemical industry and both governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Book The Americas and Oceania Assessing Sustainability

Download or read book The Americas and Oceania Assessing Sustainability written by Ray C. Anderson and published by Berkshire Publishing Group. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Americas and Oceania: Assessing Sustainability provides extensive coverage of sustainability practices in two regions linked culturally and historically by their relative isolation before the Columbian exchange, by their colonization after it, and by the challenges of pollution, resource overuse, and environmental degradation. Regional experts and international scholars focus on environmental history in areas such as the South Pacific islands, now particularly threatened by rising ocean levels due to climate change, and on countries whose governments and corporations can play a major role in promoting or discouraging sustainable choices: Brazil, an emergent power on the world stage; the United States, the world's third most populous nation; and New Zealand, seemingly on its way to becoming an enviable model of sustainable development.

Book Water Policy Tourism and Recreation

Download or read book Water Policy Tourism and Recreation written by Lin Crase and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the complicated interrelationships between freshwater resources and tourism and recreation. The focus is on Australia, but comparisons with the experience of other countries are also made throughout. Yet Australia has been at the forefront of conflicts over drought and water use, particularly for irrigated agriculture, as well as of the design of policies and institutions for water policy, so there are many lessons which can be applied to other parts of the world. The authors examine in detail the relationships between water economics and supply, and the needs for tourism and recreation. The book discusses water use and access and the conflict between urban and recreational demands. It considers the institutional arrangements around water and the significance of property rights, including water markets and water pricing. Theoretical and practical models for increasing collaboration and cooperation such as the use of trusts are also developed and water trusts in the USA are examined. Specific chapters highlight the role of interest groups, such as the boating industry, to influence policy thinking and the practical trade-offs between access to urban water supplies and the requirements of recreation. Tourist behavior in relation to water use and pricing is also assessed.
