Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice, what are the odds that cancer would strike David Yates three times – and he would survive? David Yates survived serving military duty in Vietnam, only to come home and find out that he had cancer – malignant melanoma, to be exact. After surgery and recovery time, he was finally getting back on his feet when the cancer returned less than two years later. Surgery and treatment again followed, and David was back into his life – changed, but still moving forward. More than three decades later, David found himself receiving the news of a cancer diagnosis for the third time. Cancer Sucks – A True Story is David’s story. From the moment of that third diagnosis – this time for colon cancer – David was determined to see this through to its completion. He hadn’t let cancer beat him in the past, and it wouldn’t beat him this time, either. Filled not only with personal stories, but also first-hand accounts of what to expect when going through treatments, David’s story becomes a new kind of handbook for cancer patients. Book My Parent Has Cancer and It Really Sucks

Download or read book My Parent Has Cancer and It Really Sucks written by Marc Silver and published by Sourcebooks, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let's face it, cancer sucks. This book provides real-life advice from real-life teens designed to help teens live with a parent who is fighting cancer. One million American teenagers live with a parent who is fighting cancer. It's a hard blow for those already navigating high school, preparing for college, and becoming increasingly independent. Author Maya Silver was 15 when her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. She and her dad, Marc, have combined their family's personal experience with advice from dozens of medical professionals and real stories from 100 teens—all going through the same thing Maya did. The topic of cancer can be difficult to approach, but in a highly designed, engaging style, this book gives practical guidance that includes: How to talk about the diagnosis (and what does diagnosis even mean, anyway?) The best outlets for stress (punching a wall is not a great one, but should it happen, there are instructions for a patch job) How to deal with friends (especially one the ones with 'pity eyes') Whether to tell the teachers and guidance counselors and what they should know (how not to get embarrassed in class) What happens in a therapy session and how to find a support group if you want one A special section for parents also gives tips on strategies for sharing the news and explaining cancer to a child, making sure your child doesn't become the parent, what to do if the outlook is grim, and tips for how to live life after cancer. My Parent Has Cancer and It Really Sucks allows teens to see that they are not alone. That no matter how rough things get, they will get through this difficult time. That everything they're feeling is ok. Essays from Gilda Radner's "Gilda's Club" annual contest are an especially poignant and moving testimony of how other teens dealt with their family's situation. Praise for My Parent Has Cancer and It Really Sucks: "Wisely crafted into a wonderfully warm, engaging and informative book that reads like a chat with a group of friends with helpful advice from the experts." —Paula K. Rauch MD, Director of the Marjorie E. Korff Parenting At a Challenging Time Program "A must read for parents, kids, teachers and medical staff who know anyone with cancer. You will learn something on every page." —Anna Gottlieb, MPA, Founder and CEO Gilda's Club Seattle "This book is a 'must have' for oncologists, cancer treatment centers and families with teenagers." —Kathleen McCue, MA, LSW, CCLS, Director of the Children's Program at The Gathering Place, Cleveland, OH "My Parent Has Cancer and It Really Sucks provides a much-needed toolkit for teens coping with a parent's cancer." —Jane Saccaro, CEO of Camp Kesem, a camp for children who have a parent with cancer

Book excerpt: My name is Nikki, I am 26 years old and I am a Breast Cancer Survivor. The word "Cancer"...terrifying, death, hopelessness, fearful and sad. This was how the word Cancer made me feel being 23 years old and diagnosed with Breast Cancer. This word was all to familiar to me losing my mom to Cancer when I was 15, who would have thought after seeing her battle I would soon have one of my own. It's hard to believe that something as terrifying as “Cancer” could actually change one of my core beliefs; a belief that this disease was only meant to cause pain and tragedy in one's life. I now walk with hope and gratitude for all of the little things that I use to take for granted. I stand among the many courageous woman diagnosed with Breast Cancer every day. I wanted to share my story and the hope I found through my experience. Something real to laugh with or cry with and the little tricks I found that helped me cope with the symptoms that I experienced. This is my journey....

Book Love Laughter

Download or read book Love Laughter written by Marilyn R. Moody and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-01-19 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love & Laughter is the true story of the original American Online Cancer Survivors Support Group. It was written to show the bonding between many courageous people, who came together weekly, in cyberspace to share their stories while going through their cancer experiences. The title of the book is the essence of the story. You may become teary eyed in places, and for sure you will have many good laughs as these people bring lots of humor to the sessions. The story is told in a two act play, with two scenes each. The period covered is from Halloween of 1994 through New Years Eve of 1995. There are some main characters, and also people who drop in on occasion to participate in the cancer chat meetings. You will probably find at least one person that you cant help falling in love with. If you are a cancer survivor you will probably relate to what these people are experiencing and expressing in the group. When the play was performed in Southern California it received excellent reviews. People who never had cancer, spoke about how much they learned about a cancer diagnosis. Its informative, sad, funny and very, very real. Comments from audience members who had never touched a computer but who said theyd read about chat rooms in the newspapers stated, that it gave them such a vision of what goes on in one that they now could understand what chat rooms are about. One person who lives in the Midwest ordered a copy of the video tape of the play. Shes not a cancer survivor and has never been in a chat room, but she said watching the play made her feel like she was part of the group. When you read the book you will probably wonder how cyberspace could be created on a stage... but just let your imagination go with the story thats what I did when I wrote it. Youll know whats going on, and well Welcome to Cancer Survivors!

Book So Much to Be Done

  • Author : Barbara Brenner
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2016-05-03
  • ISBN : 1452950342
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book So Much to Be Done written by Barbara Brenner and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What kind of cancer is it?” was the first question Barbara Brenner asked her doctor after hearing that the lump in her breast was malignant. His answer: “You don't need to know that.” Wrong response. Brenner, who was already an activist, made knowing her business and spreading knowledge her mission. The power behind Breast Cancer Action and its transformative Think Before You Pink® campaign, Barbara Brenner brought an abundance of wit, courage, and clarity to the cause and forever changed the conversation. What had been construed as an individual crisis could now be seen for what it was: a pressing concern of public health and social justice, with environmental issues at the center of prevention efforts. Collected in So Much to Be Done, and framed by personal accounts of Barbara and her influential work, Brenner’s columns and blog posts form a chronicle of breast cancer research and health care activism that is as inspiring as it is informative. As she takes on the corporate forces at work in breast cancer research and treatment and in the “pinkwashing” of fund-raising for the cause, Brenner, a self-described hell-raiser, contends with cancer herself, twice, and her words offer understanding and encouragement to all those whose lives are touched by the disease. When Brenner was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, she broadened her critique of health care while also writing about her own experience. Infused with her characteristic moxie, humor, anger, and compassion, these reflections from her last two years provide an in-depth, precisely observed portrayal of what it is to live with a terminal disease and to die on one’s own terms.

The intense love for her family gave her the strength to face the journey itself, while dealing with the possibility of losing her battle. It has taken Karina two years to finally get her story on paper, with two primary messages in her vision: to raise lymphoma awareness while also helping anyone reading her story who has been affected by cancer. Reliving her experiences has been a secondary journey in itself. This is her story of how she broke through the chains of cancer, through the highs and the lows, for her very own piece of salvation -- Liberation. Every tear that has been written into this book has been worth it.
