Book Fulfilling the Potential of Cancer Prevention and Early Detection

Download or read book Fulfilling the Potential of Cancer Prevention and Early Detection written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-05-07 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer ranks second only to heart disease as a leading cause of death in the United States, making it a tremendous burden in years of life lost, patient suffering, and economic costs. Fulfilling the Potential for Cancer Prevention and Early Detection reviews the proof that we can dramatically reduce cancer rates. The National Cancer Policy Board, part of the Institute of Medicine, outlines a national strategy to realize the promise of cancer prevention and early detection, including specific and wide-ranging recommendations. Offering a wealth of information and directly addressing major controversies, the book includes: A detailed look at how significantly cancer could be reduced through lifestyle changes, evaluating approaches used to alter eating, smoking, and exercise habits. An analysis of the intuitive notion that screening for cancer leads to improved health outcomes, including a discussion of screening methods, potential risks, and current recommendations. An examination of cancer prevention and control opportunities in primary health care delivery settings, including a review of interventions aimed at improving provider performance. Reviews of professional education and training programs, research trends and opportunities, and federal programs that support cancer prevention and early detection. This in-depth volume will be of interest to policy analysts, cancer and public health specialists, health care administrators and providers, researchers, insurers, medical journalists, and patient advocates.

Book Colorectal cancer awareness and prevention in an underserved population

Download or read book Colorectal cancer awareness and prevention in an underserved population written by Sherry Roberson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research project was to increase awareness of colorectal cancer prevention and screening. This project allowed the researchers to provide tailored, culturally appropriate, and accurate information on early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer that would result in a direct health impact on a population of underserved people ages 50 and older. The potential benefit of this project was to increase detection and decrease the incidence of late stage colorectal cancer in the target population by utilizing evidence-based teaching methods. Fifty surveys were conducted in a clinic that predominately provides primary health care to the medically underserved community. The goal of this survey was to assess demographics, knowledge of colorectal cancer, and barriers to screening. The inclusion criteria for this study included no prior history of colorectal cancer and be at least 50 years old. Utilizing the information provided from the questionnaires, the researchers of the project produced a colorectal cancer educational video tailored to the needs of the target population. Upon the completion of this study, it was noted that a majority of the participants were not knowledgeable about colorectal cancer, and the recommended screening guidelines, and warning signs. Fify-four percent of those surveyed had never undergone colorectal cancer screening after reaching 50 years of age. A significant finding was that 63% of the participants who had never been screened cited the reason was due to a lack of doctor recommendation. Further studies need to be conducted to determine if the CRC educational video increases awareness, knowledge, and prevention in the targeted population.

  • Author : National Cancer Policy Board
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1999-08-04

Download or read book Ensuring Quality Cancer Care written by National Cancer Policy Board and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-08-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all want to believe that when people get cancer, they will receive medical care of the highest quality. Even as new scientific breakthroughs are announced, though, many cancer patients may be getting the wrong care, too little care, or too much care, in the form of unnecessary procedures. How close is American medicine to the ideal of quality cancer care for every person with cancer? Ensuring Quality Cancer Care provides a comprehensive picture of how cancer care is delivered in our nation, from early detection to end-of-life issues. The National Cancer Policy Board defines quality care and recommends how to monitor, measure, and extend quality care to all people with cancer. Approaches to accountability in health care are reviewed. What keeps people from getting care? The book explains how lack of medical coverage, social and economic status, patient beliefs, physician decision-making, and other factors can stand between the patient and the best possible care. The board explores how cancer care is shaped by the current focus on evidence-based medicine, the widespread adoption of managed care, where services are provided, and who provides care. Specific shortfalls in the care of breast and prostate cancer are identified. A status report on health services research is included. Ensuring Quality Cancer Care offers wide-ranging data and information in clear context. As the baby boomers approach the years when most cancer occurs, this timely volume will be of special interest to health policy makers, public and private healthcare purchasers, medical professionals, patient advocates, researchers, and people with cancer.

Book Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk

Download or read book Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk written by Suzanne H. Reuben and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though overall cancer incidence and mortality have continued to decline in recent years, cancer continues to devastate the lives of far too many Americans. In 2009 alone, 1.5 million American men, women, and children were diagnosed with cancer, and 562,000 died from the disease. There is a growing body of evidence linking environmental exposures to cancer. The Pres. Cancer Panel dedicated its 2008¿2009 activities to examining the impact of environmental factors on cancer risk. The Panel considered industrial, occupational, and agricultural exposures as well as exposures related to medical practice, military activities, modern lifestyles, and natural sources. This report presents the Panel¿s recommend. to mitigate or eliminate these barriers. Illus.
