Book excerpt: Political, economic and social barriers among Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada are giving way to global forces and the "global dreams" they inspire. This collection of original articles and essays examines popular culture, literature, theatre, belief systems, indigenous practices and questions of identity, exile and alienation. The interconnectedness and distinction of cultural production throughout the Americas, "transplanted" interests, the mediation of African and European influences, and the expression of shifting identities, all reflect the development of a new American neighbourhood.

Book excerpt: Discovering the Americas describes and analyzes the evolution of Canadian foreign policy towards Latin America. The book is divided into three parts, each reflecting a distinct phase of Canada's relations with the Americas. Part 1 traces Canada's minimal relations from the beginning of the century until the Trudeau years. Part 2 examines the Trudeau era when, partly propelled by nationalism, Canada sought a more independent role in its relations with Latin America. Part 3 discusses the post- 1984 era, which has been marked by the prospect of an emerging hegemony in the Americas.

Book Canada Latin America and the New Internationalism

Download or read book Canada Latin America and the New Internationalism written by Brian J.R. Stevenson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-12-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Canada, Latin America, and the New Internationalism Brian Stevenson argues that Canada's foreign policy toward Latin America has been profoundly affected by these three factors and has evolved in response to both changing domestic demands and shifting international circumstances. By analysing a pivotal period in Canada-Latin American relations, he shows us how successive Canadian governments made important initiatives toward closer relationships with Latin America and were also pressured by non-governmental organizations to play a bigger role in the region. Canada's increased role can be seen in official foreign policy commitments, such as the decision to join the Organization of American States, and in policy decisions on political refugees. He explains that while the United States has played a key role in sometimes constraining Canadian foreign policy in the region, it is important to realize that Canadian foreign policy has been steadied by a long-standing tradition of internationalism. Canada, Latin America, and the New Internationalism demonstrates that the tradition of internationalism in Canadian foreign policy as viewed from the perspective of foreign policy analysis provides the framework within which to understand and accommodate changes in its policy toward Latin America. The period which the book explores is critical in order to understand the contemporary nature and future direction of Canada-Latin America relations.

[...] Two other clear motivations are the strengthening of the domestic security apparatuses of countries affected by the drug trade, that also affects Canadian society and its perception of security; and strengthening of parliaments and other forms of accountability on the executive arms of governments in Latin America and the Caribbean. [...] According to the Auditor General of Canada, the lack of a formal plan has meant that Canada's aid priorities are determined by other "Government of Canada policy objectives, the priorities of the Minister of International Cooperation, and CIDA's own operational policies and strategies" (Office of the Auditor General of Canada, 2009). [...] In addition to regular communication and meetings, the project will host two workshops: one at the outset to get researchers and policymakers to agree on areas for research that are relevant to policy, and the other at the end of the project to share research findings and policy recommendations with key actors in the sector. [...] It supports three types of 17 The PAHO services as the Regional Office for the Americas of the WHO and the technical health agency of the OAS.

Book Canada s Past and Future in Latin America

Download or read book Canada s Past and Future in Latin America written by Pablo Heidrich and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-04-27 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many historians and political scientists argue that ties between Canada and Latin America have been weak and intermittent because of lack of mutual interest and common objectives. Has this record of diverging paths changed as Canada has attempted to expand its economic and diplomatic ties with the region? Has Canada become an imperialist power? Canada’s Past and Future in Latin America investigates the historical origins of and more recent developments in Canadian foreign policy in the region. It offers a detailed evaluation of the Harper and Trudeau governments’ approaches to Latin America, touching on political diplomacy, bilateral development cooperation, and civil society initiatives. Leading scholars of Canada–Latin America relations offer insights from unique perspectives on a range of issues, such as the impact of Canadian mining investment, security relations, democracy promotion, and the changing nature of Latin American migration to Canada. Drawing on archival research, field interviews, and primary sources, Canada’s Past and Future in Latin America advances our understanding of Canadian engagement with the region and evaluates options for building stronger ties in the future.
