To that consideration every other has been subordinated. By identifying so far as possible the actual battle position of individual battalions it is hoped to stimulate local pride and interest in their respective territorial or recruiting areas. Difficulties were here encountered, both through absence Of detailed Oflicial narratives and limitations of space, but if full justice has not been done each fighting unit, it is not from lack of application and goodwill. Book Canada s Triumph From Amiens to Mons

Download or read book Canada s Triumph From Amiens to Mons written by Fred James and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada's Triumph From Amiens to Mons: August to November 1918 It was a clear night on the 7th. From out a velvet sky the stars looked down on the hosts waiting to go into battle at the first ush of dawn along a twenty mile battle front that stretched from the river Avre to the Ancre. In the territory to the rear supplies were stored ready to go forward the next day; dressing stations and hospitals were prepared to receive the inevitable victims of a clash of fighting bodies. Before the zero hour the infantry all along the front moved up close to the Hun line. The French were on the right of the Canadians, the Australians on the left. Our right ank was on the amiens-roye road and our left on the amiens-chaulnes Railway. At precisely on the morning of the 8th the Allied artillery crashed out in a united roar. Though the Canadians' guns had been in position for three days not a shot had been fired. Unwarned, the enemy remained unsuspicious. The gunners relied on getting results from calculations made from carefully prepared maps drafted on information obtained by the intelligence staff. This was a new departure in gunnery and proved an unqualified success. All the firing was done without previous registration by actual fire. Book Shock Army of the British Empire

Download or read book Shock Army of the British Empire written by Shane B. Schreiber and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1997-06-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an operational history of the Canadian Corps in the battles of the final 100 days of World War I, beginning with the battle of Amiens, August 8, 1918, and culminating in the retaking of Mons on November 11, 1918, only hours before the war ended. During the late summer and autumn of 1918, the Canadian Corps, under Lt. Gen. Sir Arthur Currie, played a crucial role in the defeat of the German Army on the Western Front. This work examines the operational, organizational, and tactical innovations developed by the Corps during this campaign and their subsequent effect on military thought. Six battles are examined for their planning, conduct, and lessons: the Battle of Amiens, the breaking of the Drocourt-Queant line, the Canal du Nord and Cambrai, the pursuit to Valenciennes, the storming of Mount Huoy, and the return to Mons.

Download or read book The Greatest Victory written by J. L. Granatstein and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Canadians come to lead these mobile, well-coordinated, and hard-hitting attacks? The preparations were intense, according to Granatstein, ranging from individual training to massive corps-wide exercises; careful analysis of "lessons learned" studies; expansion of the role of signallers, gunners and engineers; and perfection of techniques like the "creeping barrage." The "fire and movement" philosophy emphasized by Sir Arthur Currie, Commander of the Canadian Corps, increased the use of tanks, machine guns, Stokes mortars, and phosphorus bombs, among other military hardware. Mobility was the key; Canadians used their two Motor Machine Brigades - with guns and mortars mounted on armoured cars and trucks - with great effect. Granatstein is an award-winning historian who has received six honorary degrees for his work on conflict and Canadian history.
