Book Recent Approaches to Canada Goose Management

Download or read book Recent Approaches to Canada Goose Management written by Harvey K. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 15 years considerable attention has been focused on research and management problems associated with the Mississippi Valley population of Canada Geese. The general breeding, migration, and wintering ranges are well defined. Because this flock is closely associated with national wildlife refuges and State management areas in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and the majority of this population winters in southern Illinois and vicinity, it has been possible to determine quite accurately annual total population trends, annual harvest rates, and the breeding potential of the population sent back to the breeding grounds each spring. Based on knowledge accumulated for this population, steps are being taken to compile similar information for other major continental Canada goose populations.

Book The Rocky Mountain Population of the Western Canada Goose

Download or read book The Rocky Mountain Population of the Western Canada Goose written by William B. Krohn and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The western Canada goose (Branta canadensis moffitti) was divided into a Rocky Mountain population (RMP) and a Pacific population (PP) on the basis of band recovery programs examined in this study and recovery data from other investigators. Habitat information provided a base line for evaluating future changes in nesting, molting, and wintering areas. Topics covered in the discussion of breeding biology are nesting chronology, spring population composition, breeding age, clutch size, nesting success, artificial nesting structures, and gosling survival. Some management recommendations include the refinement and standardization of spring and winter aerial surveys, and more accurate age and sex determinations when geese are banded and color-marked.

Download or read book Wild Geese written by M. A. Ogilvie and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In range, Wild Geese covers the geese of North America, Europe and Asia, and thus the world species except for the Hawaiian Goose or Ne-Ne. The plan of the book is similar to the author's Ducks of Britain and Europe but distribution, status and migration rightly assume a more extensive role in Wild Geese and the detailed text on those subjects is fully complemented by migration and distribution maps. Comprehensive chapters are also devoted to classification, ecology, breeding, identification, and to exploitation and conservation. The identification chapter is especially helpful with sections on adult and first winter birds, downy young, plumage variants and voice, for each species and sub-species, as well as guidance on ageing and sexing geese in the field. The text is effectively supported by 16 identification plates in colour by Carol Ogilvie, showing details of heads and bills as well as all species in flight and on the ground, and downy young. The author is an established authority on ducks and geese and has been a research scientist at the Wildfowl Trust, Slimbridge, England, since 1960.

Book Global Warming and Population Responses among Great Plains Birds

Download or read book Global Warming and Population Responses among Great Plains Birds written by Paul Johnsgard and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-02-19 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Based on an analysis of 47 years (1967-2014) of Audubon Christmas Bird Counts (CBC), evidence for population changes and shifts in early winter (late December) ranges of nearly 150 species of birds in the Great Plains states is summarized, a region defined as including the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and the Texas panhandle. The rationale for this study had its origins in Terry Root's 1988 Atlas of North American Wintering Birds. ... The present analysis includes all of the 40 annual CBC surveys from the 1967-8 to the 2006-7 counts, plus the results of the most recent 2013-14 CBC. The present summary quantitatively describes the early winter abundance for 147 of the most commonly encountered regional species, illustrating their temporal changes in geographic distributions and relative abundance between 1967 and 2014"--Publisher description.
