Book excerpt: International students not only have an economic impact on the United States in the billions of dollars, they culturally enrich college campuses and play a critical role in fostering U.S. foreign relations (NAFSA, 2006). The purpose of this study was to examine international students' perceptions of the United States as a result of participating in a short-term ESL program at three campuses of a community college district in the Midwest, and to explore the influence of campus cultural attributes (diversity of the student body, breadth of support for international students, and setting) on these perceptions. This was a mixed-method study. Data was collected via a quantitative survey, four focus groups, and two case studies. The participants were sixty students from eight countries throughout East and Southeast Asia. The findings suggest that the students' perceptions of U.S. culture were altered as a result of their eight-week stay in the United States for each of the five perception areas examined: diversity, friendliness, safety, wealth, and quality of American higher education. The findings also suggest that perceptions of U.S. culture differed because of the cultural attributes of each campus. An important finding was that students from all campuses expressed appreciation for the open discussion and collaborative learning environment of their college classrooms. The class format contributed to increased perceptions of the quality of American higher education. Additionally, students from all three campuses were required to participate in a service learning project that connected academic and social experiences. This experience was integral in not only connecting students with their local communities, but also students reported a greater understanding of wealth stratification in the United States. The attributes from each campus that contributed to positive perceptions and experiences are presented in a model titled S.C.A.L.E. This is an acronym for the five key factors that influenced perception formation: Staff, Culturally-relevant Curriculum, American Student Contact, Local/regional Exploration, and Experiential Learning. All components impact perceptions to various degrees depending on the cultural attributes of the campuses. Implications and suggestions for international student programming, and suggestions for further research conclude the study.

In the 2020-2021 school year, international student enrollment declined by 15%, demonstrating the direct impact of the pandemic on U.S. institutions of higher learning (Svrluga, 2021). Moreover, the financial contribution of foreign students dropped by 27% to $28.4 billion in the same financial year, which was attributed to perceptions among international students that they were unwelcome, in addition to visa processing challenges. The purpose of the study was to examine factors influencing the retention of foreign learners in U.S. higher education institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study aimed to identify the unique challenges international students faced coping with the COVID-19 pandemic while in the United States. The study further examined some key interventions higher education institutions should have implemented to ensure international students' experiences remained positive and existing challenges were resolved effectively. The study was guided by Spady's model, Tinto's theory, and the PICO framework (Considine et al., 2017; Nicoletti, 2019). The study was grounded on a systematic review of pertinent literature. The studies' relevance to the research questions was derived from journals, conference proceedings, electronic databases of U.S. colleges and universities, research reports from research organizations, and other electronic databases such as JSTOR, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Emerald. The PRISMA 2009 flow diagram guided the process of selecting studies. Results from quantitative studies were compared based on the methodologies adopted and results found out. Qualitative studies that were included were analyzed thematically."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This study explored perceptions of sense of belonging in academic and social contexts at West Coast University for Indian international LGBQ students in the United States with a focus on how institutional contexts and sociohistorical factors influence perceptions of sense of belonging on campus at the intersection of multiple identities. To address individual and institutional factors, a critical qualitative framework of Intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989, 1991) and a constructivist qualitative framework of Sense of Belonging (Strayhorn, 2012) grounded this phenomenological study. The current study used intersectionality to highlight the multiple and intersecting sociohistorical structures that influence Indian international LGBQ students' perceptions of sense of belonging on campus. Sense of Belonging encapsulates how perceptions of personal and interpersonal experiences impact an individual's connectedness and overall success on campus. Strayhorn (2012) conceptualization of Sense of Belonging into seven elements is used in framing and analyzing the study. The seven elements are (a) sense of belonging is a basic human need; (b) is a fundamental motive; (c) takes on heightened importance in certain contexts at certain times in certain populations; (d) is related to, and seemingly is a consequence of, mattering; (e) social identities intersect and affect college students' sense of belonging; (f) engenders other positive outcomes; and (g)m be satisfied on a continual basis and likely changes as circumstances, conditions and contexts change (Strayhorn, 2012). All four participants partook in three semi-structured phenomenological interviews based on Seidman's (2013) three-part interview structure: (a) focused life history- understanding of individual and cultural values and journey to U.S. higher education; (b) details of the experience - exploring individual interactions in campus and academic contexts; and (c) reflection on the meaning of the phenomenon - how individuals perceive and make meaning of these experiences. The data analysis developed three major themes: (1) Defying Boundaries, Defining Self and Community, (2) Speaking Language to Power, and (3) Centering Self within Sociohistorical Contexts. Overall, participants did not feel strong sense of belonging on campus. While interpersonal relationships fostered some belonging, there was a clear lack of overall perceptions of sense of belonging within academic and social contexts. The most salient facets of identity influencing sense of belonging for Indian international LGBQ students were sexuality, race, international student status, linguistic ability, and gender. While undergraduate and graduate students had similar perceptions of sense of belonging, graduate students expressed a need for relationships with other Indian international students while undergraduate students intentionally looked for domestic social circles. At the institutional level, salient factors influencing belongingness for Indian international LGBQ students were: (a) lack of awareness among domestic peers and faculty; (b) lack of visibility of Indian international LGBQ identities and communities on campus, (c) English language testing and requirements and (d) lack of institutional funding support. Intersecting sociohistorical factors influenced individual perceptions of sense of belonging by creating a culture where students did not feel it possible to express their intersectional identities on campus. Finally the study ends with recommendations for practice and research by higher education professionals and scholars. The study concludes recommendations for practice and research to foster sense of belonging for Indian international LGBQ students by enhancing support and services specifically for this population while also challenging current definitions of sense of belonging and expanding monolithic representations of international students.

The number of Chinese international students studying abroad has increased by 600% over the last two decades. Higher education institution leaders need to understand this growing segment of their student population and meet their unique needs. Unfortunately, regional data is lacking concerning antecedent factors of acculturative stress for Chinese international students. The purpose of this narrative study was to understand Chinese international students' perceptions of the factors, if any, that may lead to acculturative stress while attending a four-year public university in the southeastern United States. The research question was, How do Chinese international students understand their cultural and academic experiences at a public, four-year university in the southeastern United States? This study was based on an interpretive paradigm study. This narrative inquiry population included three Chinese international students enrolled full-time at a public, four-year university in the southeastern United States. The key conclusions were (a) university interactions in the southeastern United States are largely positive, with a few exceptions; (b) cultural differences have a powerful influence on Chinese international students' acculturative experiences in the southeastern United States; (c) current political and social conditions in the United States are causing heightened stress among Chinese international students; and (d) language challenges are the single greatest stressor for Chinese international students in the southeastern United States.

Book excerpt: Social support has been found to contribute to an overall positive adjustment for International students in U.S. colleges. This study addressed the relationship between International students' perceptions of university assistance in adjusting to campus life and their social adjustment levels. Questionnaires were divided into two sections: 1) university helpfulness in connecting with others - collegiate personnel and students - in the campus community and through the various campus events offered; and 2) assessing social adjustment through The Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ). The questionnaire was distributed to undergraduate students attending a private Midwestern university with 62 usable responses gathered from 31 American and 31 International students representing eight international countries. The university had 68 undergraduate International students and 45.4% participated in the current study. Statistical analyses revealed that Americans were more socially adjusted to university life when compared with International students (p.001). The data also disclosed that there was no relationship between level of adjustment to campus life and student perception of being respected by peers and faculty (p.05). However, International students with relatively lower social adjustment were observed as more likely to perceive campus activities as less useful than their more well-adjusted International peers, though no significance was found (p>.05). All the International students reported being treated well by faculty and students, yet improvements were suggested for social events to include opportunities for multicultural relations. Implications of this study suggest that well-developed campus events that connect International and American students could have a positive impact on social adjustment for International students.
