Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camping Among Cannibals By the skipper I was introduced to the agent, and by him to a dozen or so of other nautical gentlemen, one of whom, a young man, was, I learned, to aecom pany us, being somehow interested in a part of the cargo. Him I have found a most pleasant companion. Two bare little rooms formed the agent's offices, upon whose wooden walls hung great charts represent ing very large spaces of water dotted here and there with minute specks, which, on their part, stood for the Islands. But the branches of beautiful coral and strange brightly-coloured shells on the safe and mantelpiece, and the richly-carved canoe-paddle pushed away in a corner behind a dusty file of old bills, were most suggestive of the interesting places to which they traded. Here I took my berth, and found myself, to my surprise, to be a person of some importance as the passenger, for I am the only one; and here I returned after making some purchases in the town of necessaries for the voyage, as nothing was provided in the way of cabin furniture but a mattress, of which, indeed, they spoke with some complacency, but which, after I had endured for two nights its intolerable smell and dirt, I besought the skipper to have thrust below. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out of the Woods: A Romance of Camp Life Robert Ferris lounged on the window seat of this quarters at the C Club finishing his after-dinner cigar, and watched the moon as it rose over Lake Michigan, giving a touch of picturesqueness to Chicago's most unattractive harbor. He was perplexed, and the cause lay in the telegram and the letter which he held in his hand. The telegram, which was from the manager of the Gloria mine, stated that the feeling among the strikers was hourly growing more serious, and urged him to come at once. The letter was from his oldest friend, Captain Philip Vinton, a retired naval officer, saying that on the next day he would reach Chicago, where he was to join a party of friends for a month's outing in the woods of northern Michigan. Ferris's father, Edward Ferris, also a naval officer, had been killed in the early part of our civil war by the bursting of a cannon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ghost Camp or the Avengers A wild and desolate land; dreary, even savage, to the unaccustomed eye. Forest-clothed hills towering above the faint, narrow track leading eastward, along which a man had been leading a tired horse; he was now resting against a granite boulder. A dark, mist-enshrouded day, during which the continuous driving showers had soaked through an overcoat, now become so heavy that he carried it across his arm. A fairly heavy valise, above a pair of blankets, was strapped in front of his saddle. He was prepared for bush travelling - although his term of "colonial experience," judging from his ruddy cheek and general get-up, had been limited. A rift in the over-hanging cloud-wrack, through which the low sunrays broke with a sudden gleam, showed a darksome mountain range to the south, with summit and sides, snow-clad and dazzling white. The wayfarer stood up and stared at the apparition: "a good omen," thought he, "perhaps a true landmark. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
