The church in a little country village of Central New York, where I lived. Formed a Ladies' Aid Society to work for the soldiers. All the old linen that had been saved for years by our mothers, was brought out and the girls scraped the lint from it for use in the hospitals. We made quilts, knit mittens, and packed boxes that were distributed through the Christian Commission. That was fifty years ago, but it is still f resh in memory. It was war, dreadful war then as it is now, but in our own beloved land. When the call came for men in the early sixties, many of my friends and acquaintances answered promptly and marched to the front. It is the experiences of one of the regiments that went from my own neighbort that I have tried to relate in this volume. What a pity that Curran was not Spared to relate in his own graceful language the story of his regiment! The Fifth Oneida has no his torian of its own. It has been my pleasure to know many of the ofioers and men of this valiant regiment, and I have often heard them recount their adventures. As a labor of love, therefore, and not for gain I have endeavored, during the past few years, to gather together their fragments of stories and crystallize them into this narrative. Many have aided in the work. To give credit to all, whose kindly suggestion or bit of evidence has been of help, would be impossible in this short space. Major A. I. King has been a constant help. The lieutenant colonel of a New York regiment and rising star in the Army of the Potomac, Gouverneur K. Warren performed heroically at Gettysburg. For his service at Bristoe Station and Mine Run, he was awarded command of the Fifth Corps for the 1864 Virginia campaign. But Warren’s peculiarities of temperament and personality put a cloud over his service at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania and cost him the confidence of his superiors, Grant and Meade. He was summarily relieved of his command by Philip Sheridan after winning the Battle of Five Forks, just eight days before Appomattox. Warren continued as an engineer of distinction in the Army after the war, but he was determined to clear his name before a board of inquiry, which conducted an exhaustive investigation into the battle, Warren’s conduct, and Sheridan’s arbitrary action. However, the findings of the court vindicating Warren were not made public until shortly after his death. For this major biography of Gouverneur Warren, David M.
