Book excerpt: In 1870 the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck ordered the Prussian Army to invade France, inciting one of the most dramatic conflicts in European history. It transformed not only the states-system of the European continent but the whole climate of European moral and political thought. The overwhelming triumph of German military might, evoking general admiration and imitation, introduced an era of power politics, which was to reach its disastrous climax in 1914. Michael Howard's The Franco-Prussian War is widely acclaimed as a classic and the definitive history of one of the most dramatic and decisive conflicts in the history of Europe. Evoking a palpable sense of the struggle and the high stakes of the war, Howard analyses the tactics, political dynamics, morale and actions that determined the course of the conflict. He also describes the crucial role played by key figures in the war, including Bismarck, the Prussian military commander Helmuth Von Moltke, and the French generals MacMahon, Chanzy and Trochu. He also sheds fascinating light on how difficult it was to bring the war to an end, with extremists in both France and Prussia pushing to prolong the conflict. A tour de force of both European and military history, The Franco-Prussian War is a superb account of this dramatic and hugely important conflict, ideal for the student, historian and general reader alike. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new Foreword by Bertrand Taithe.

Book The Bayonets Of The Republic

Download or read book The Bayonets Of The Republic written by John A Lynn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bayonets of the Republic challenges the view of the French revolutionary army as an unskilled but fiercely patriotic fighting force that won simply by overwhelming its enemies with bayonet assaults. Skillfully combining traditional and new military history, Lynn demonstrates that French combat effectiveness encompassed far more than mere patriotism or frenzied charges.Lynn focuses on the Armee du Nord, largest of the eleven armies which protected the borders of France at the height of the Revolution. He does not, however, restrict himself to an analysis of generalship or weaponry, but examines every aspect of life in the French army--from rank-and-file recruitment, officer selection, discipline, political education, and group cohesion, to the flexible use of line, column, and skirmishers on the battlefield. The image which emerges is one of a highly motivated, disciplined, and tactically superior army that outmaneuvered and outfought its opponents. For students of the French Revolution, Bayonets builds upon and extends the best of recent scholarship on subjects as diverse as the debate over conscription and the distribution of revolutionary newspapers and songbooks. For military historians, it combines social, organizational, and operational elements to present a unique view of the French army as an institution and fighting force. And, finally, for social scientists concerned with troop motivation and combat effectiveness, it supplies a highly illustrative case study of troops under fire.

Book Bottlenecks risks and stresses in the cotton supply chain in Burkina Faso

Download or read book Bottlenecks risks and stresses in the cotton supply chain in Burkina Faso written by Artavia Oreamuno, M.A. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotton plays an important role in the economy of Burkina Faso, accounting for about 4 percent of GDP and 14 percent of export earnings. The COVID 19 pandemic had a strong impact on international cotton supply chains, with confinement measures affecting sales of textiles and apparel as well as international logistics, which in turn affected cotton markets and disturbed trade and international prices. In addition, national cotton supply chains are vulnerable to other shocks and stresses such as droughts, pests, storms, and irregular weather patterns resulting from climate change. This study aimed to identify major bottlenecks, risks and stresses affecting the cotton supply chain in Burkina Faso, with the purpose of deriving lessons to strengthen its resilience capacity and development, and with it, to improve the situation of the millions of livelihoods dependent on the cotton supply chain. The findings show that disruption in global cotton markets led to lower domestic cotton purchase prices in Burkina Faso, but that the overall impact on cotton domestic markets was limited. Nonetheless, poverty and food security was negatively affected. Key constraints include low incomes, natural capital, availability and costs of irrigation systems and tractors, and the availability of financial options. The low level of domestic processing of cotton fibre is also considered an important bottleneck. The key risks to the cotton supply chain in Burkina Faso are identified as climate change, pests and insecurity. Furthermore, governance issues negatively impacts on farmer’s motivation, farming skills, extension services and the availability of financing options.
