Catering for all types of visitors, from bar-hoppers to birdwatchers, and covering everything from Ghana's 550km of Atlantic coastline to its remote and sparsely populated northern border, Bradt's Ghana is the most detailed resource for those who want to explore the country's wealth of tropical beaches, national parks, forest reserves, cultural sites and scenic waterfalls. Written by Africa expert Philip Briggs, it provides unrivalled detail and knowledge of this little-visited nation. Book excerpt: They said it couldn't be done, but geeky sophomore Lauren Carlson transformed herself into a popular girl after moving to a new school half-way across the country. Amazing what losing your braces and going out for cheerleading will do. Only trouble is, the popular crowd is wearing on Lauren's nerves and she can't wait to return to summer camp where she's valued for her brain instead of her handsprings. She misses her old friends and most of all, her long time camp-only boyfriend, Seth. This year she intends to upgrade their relationship to year-round status once she's broken up with her new, jock boyfriend, Matt. He doesn't begin to know the real her, a girl fascinated by the night sky who dreams of discovering new planets and galaxies. But Matt isn't giving up without a fight. As he makes his case to stay together, Lauren begins to realize his feelings run deeper than she ever would have guessed. What if the guy she thought she was meant to be with forever isn't really The One? Returning to Camp Juniper Point was supposed to ground her uprooted life, but she's more adrift than ever. Everything feels different and soon Lauren's friends are turning on her and both guys question what she really wants. As summer tensions escalate, Lauren wonders if she's changed more than she thought. Will her first big discovery be herself? -- P.[4] of cover.

Book excerpt: Welcome to Dry Wells, a dystopia scorched by fiery drought, a charnel ground of dry bones and parched souls. Furious Christian rightwing fanatics called the Knights of the Lord's Second Coming rise from its socioeconomic ashes to take action, to reclaim their god given birthright: their right to bigotry and religious freedom. Immersed in their evangelical, apocalyptic fervor, they voluntarily patrol the border for illegal aliens in an effort to beat back the tide of diversity. The drama further unfolds when Jesus Christ himself appears to their leader, commanding him to build an end times tabernacle: a concentration camp for sodomites, liberals, feminists and the like to be held prisoner until the Final Judgment. It's an American horror story of biblical proportions.

The only complete history of U.S. armed forces from the advent of the tank in battle during World War I to the campaign to drive Iraq out of Kuwait in 1991, Camp Colt to Desert Storm traces the development of doctrine for operations at the tactical and operational levels of war and translates this fighting doctrine into the development of equipment.

Book German Prisoners of War at Camp Cooke California

Download or read book German Prisoners of War at Camp Cooke California written by Jeffrey E. Geiger and published by Sunbury Press, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943, the first great wave of Hitler’s soldier’s came to America, not as goose-stepping conquering heroes, but as prisoners of war. By the time World War II ended in 1945, more than six hundred German POW camps had sprung up across America holding a total of 371,683 POWs. One of these camps was established at the U.S. Army’s training installation Camp Cooke on June 16, 1944. The POW base camp at Cooke operated sixteen branch camps in six of California’s fifty-eight counties and is today the site of Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County. Compared to other prisoner of war camps in California, Camp Cooke generally held the largest number of German POWs and operated the most branch camps in the state. A large number of the prisoners were from Field Marshal Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps, as well as from other military formations. Under the terms of the Geneva Convention, the prisoners received comfortable quarters and excellent care. They filled critical wartime labor shortages inside the main Army post at Cooke and in the outlying civilian communities, performing agricultural work for which they were paid. On weekends and evenings, they enjoyed many recreational entertainment and educational opportunities available to them in the camp. For many POWs, the American experience helped reshape their worldview and gave them a profound appreciation of American democracy. This book follows the military experiences of fourteen German soldiers who were captured during the campaigns in North Africa and Europe and then sat out the remainder of the war as POWs in California. It is a firsthand account of life as a POW at Camp Cooke and the lasting impression it had on the prisoners.
