Download or read book Camouflaged Sisters written by Lila Holley and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We see their strong, determined faces in uniform. We see their unceasing exhibition of honor and courage while protecting our country. But there is something we don't see: victims of the system--the system with the mission to protect all people of America, including its servicemembers. In Camouflaged Sisters: Silent No More, twelve women strip away all comfort and protection to share the struggles they've faced, not on the battlefield, but instead in places they never expected--in their homes, in their barracks, amongst friends. These are the stories of sexual trauma, domestic violence, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many other dangerous challenges women in the military fight every day. This book gives a voice to the warrior who has suffered in silence, the soldier who has been plagued by pain, and the woman who will no longer stand for injustice but will rise up as a victor and speak her truth.

Throughout their military careers, these women navigated both loving and complicated relationships with their families-defined by blood and the service-that shaped their decisions and drive to succeed. Book Standing Up Against Hate

Download or read book Standing Up Against Hate written by Mary Cronk Farrell and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standing Up Against Hate tells the stories of the African American women who enlisted in the newly formed Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in World War II. They quickly discovered that they faced as many obstacles in the armed forces as they did in everyday life. However, they refused to back down. They interrupted careers and left family, friends, and loved ones to venture into unknown and sometimes dangerous territory. They survived racial prejudice and discrimination with dignity, succeeded in jobs women had never worked before, and made crucial contributions to the military war effort. The book centers around Charity Adams, who commanded the only black WAAC battalion sent overseas and became the highest ranking African American woman in the military by the end of the war. Along with Adams’s story are those of other black women who played a crucial role in integrating the armed forces. Their tales are both inspiring and heart-wrenching. The book includes a timeline, bibliography, and index.

Book Cinderella s Sisters

  • Author : Dorothy Ko
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

Download or read book Cinderella s Sisters written by Dorothy Ko and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-12-12 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of footbinding is full of contradictions and unexpected turns. The practice originated in the dance culture of China's medieval court and spread to gentry families, brothels, maid's quarters, and peasant households. Conventional views of footbinding as patriarchal oppression often neglect its complex history and the incentives of the women involved. This revisionist history, elegantly written and meticulously researched, presents a fascinating new picture of the practice from its beginnings in the tenth century to its demise in the twentieth century. Neither condemning nor defending foot-binding, Dorothy Ko debunks many myths and misconceptions about its origins, development, and eventual end, exploring in the process the entanglements of male power and female desires during the practice's thousand-year history. Cinderella's Sisters argues that rather than stemming from sexual perversion, men's desire for bound feet was connected to larger concerns such as cultural nostalgia, regional rivalries, and claims of male privilege. Nor were women hapless victims, the author contends. Ko describes how women—those who could afford it—bound their own and their daughters' feet to signal their high status and self-respect. Femininity, like the binding of feet, was associated with bodily labor and domestic work, and properly bound feet and beautifully made shoes both required exquisite skills and technical knowledge passed from generation to generation. Throughout her narrative, Ko deftly wields methods of social history, literary criticism, material culture studies, and the history of the body and fashion to illustrate how a practice that began as embodied lyricism—as a way to live as the poets imagined—ended up being an exercise in excess and folly.

Book Riding the Bus with My Sister

Download or read book Riding the Bus with My Sister written by Rachel Simon and published by HMH. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “heartwarming, life-affirming” memoir of a relationship with an intellectually disabled sibling: “Read this book. It might just change your life” (Boston Herald). Beth is a spirited woman with an intellectual disability who lives intensely and often joyfully, and spends most of her days riding the buses in Pennsylvania. The drivers, a lively group, are her mentors; her fellow passengers, her community—though some display less patience or kindness than others. Her sister, Rachel, a teacher and writer, camouflages her emotional isolation by leading a hyperbusy life. But one day, Beth asks Rachel to accompany her on public transportation for an entire year—and Rachel accepts. This wise, funny, deeply affecting book is the chronicle of that remarkable time, as Rachel learns how to live in the moment, how to pay attention to what really matters, how to change, how to love—and how to slow down and enjoy the ride. Weaving in anecdotes and memories of terrifying maternal abandonment, fierce sisterly loyalty, and astonishing forgiveness, Rachel Simon brings to light a world that is almost invisible to many people, finds unlikely heroes in everyday life, and, without sentimentality, wrestles with her own limitations and portrays Beth as the endearing, feisty, independent person she is. “With tenderness and fury, heartbreak and acceptance . . . Simon comes to the inescapable conclusion that we are all riders on the bus, and on the bus we are all the same.” —Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean

Book En Gendering the War on Terror

Download or read book En Gendering the War on Terror written by Kim Rygiel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war on terror has been raging for many years now, and subsequently there is a growing body of literature examining the development, motivation and effects of this US-led aggression. Virtually absent from these accounts is an examination of the central role that gender, race, class and sexuality play in the war on terror. This lack of attention reflects a continued resistance by analysts to acknowledge and engage identity-related social issues as central elements within global politics. As this conflict spreads and deepens, it is more important than ever to examine how diverse international actors are using the war on terror as an opportunity to reinforce existing gendered, raced, classed and sexualized inter/national relations. This book examines the official war stories being told to the international community about why and against whom the war on terror is being waged. The book will benefit students, scholars and practitioners in the areas of international relations, women's studies and cultural studies.

Book The Religious History of American Women

Download or read book The Religious History of American Women written by Catherine A. Brekus and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-11-13 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a generation after the rise of women's history alongside the feminist movement, it is still difficult, observes Catherine Brekus, to locate women in histories of American religion. Mary Dyer, a Quaker who was hanged for heresy; Lizzie Robinson, a former slave and laundress who sold Bibles door to door; Sally Priesand, a Reform rabbi; Estela Ruiz, who saw a vision of the Virgin Mary--how do these women's stories change our understanding of American religious history and American women's history? In this provocative collection of twelve essays, contributors explore how considering the religious history of American women can transform our dominant historical narratives. Covering a variety of topics--including Mormonism, the women's rights movement, Judaism, witchcraft trials, the civil rights movement, Catholicism, everyday religious life, Puritanism, African American women's activism, and the Enlightenment--the volume enhances our understanding of both religious history and women's history. Taken together, these essays sound the call for a new, more inclusive history. Contributors: Ann Braude, Harvard Divinity School Catherine A. Brekus, University of Chicago Divinity School Anthea D.
