Book excerpt: A tear, engineered in 1856 by Rodolphe-the adulterous lover of Flaubert's Madame Bovary-is dripped onto a breakup letter and sent to the heroine via messenger. "There ought to have been some tears on this; but I can't cry; it isn't my fault," he says, but not to her. Then, having filled a drinking glass with water, Rodolphe dips his finger and lets a big drop fall onto the paper, leaving a pale stain on the ink. Cally Spooner's monograph documents a large eco-system of 40+ works which takes the incident of this false tear as a lynch pin, to reflect on the outsourcing, hijacking, erosion, decay, or destruction of personal, subjective utterance, in a 21st-century hyper connected and financialized climate. For the monograph, Spooner describes each work in an active, present-tense voice, intercut with diagrams, drawings, culled, and censored correspondence. New essays bring into focus central themes that play out in Spooner's transdisciplinary performance work.

Book The Artist s Novel A New Medium

Download or read book The Artist s Novel A New Medium written by David Maroto and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do artists write novels? What impact does the artist?s novel have on the visual arts? How should such a novel be experienced? In recent years, there has been a proliferation of visual artists who create novels as part of their broader art practice. They do so in order to address artistic issues by means of novelistic devices, favoring a sort of art predicated on process and subjectivity, introducing notions such as fiction, narrative, and imagination. In this sense, it is possible to see the novel as a new medium in the visual arts; yet very little is known about it. This two-volume publication is the first to explore in depth the subject of the artist?s novel.00Part 1, 'A New Medium', is a theoretical examination that looks critically at the different ways contemporary artists employ the artist?s novel, focusing mainly on four key case studies: Benjamin Seror?s 'Mime Radio', Cally Spooner?s 'Collapsing in Parts', Mai-Thu Perret?s 'The Crystal Frontier', and Goldin+Senneby?s 'Headless'. It seeks to situate the artist?s novel within the broader context of the visual arts in the hopes of sparking a much-needed discussion about a practice that has long been ignored by critical strands in art discourse. It includes valuable resources, such as the only existing bibliography of artists? novels.00Published with Part 2: 'The Fantasy of the Novel'(ISBN 9788867494255) as a two-volume publication.

Book excerpt: John Latham (1921 - 2006) is widely considered a pioneer of British conceptual art.His multifaceted practice encompasses sculpture, installation, painting, film, land art, engineering, found-object, assemblage, performance happenings and theoretical writings, the diversity of which is galvanised by his unique understanding of our place in the universe. This publication traces the trajectory of Latham's practice and brings together archival material, including documentary photographs, texts, correspondence and various ephemera, in order to build a picture of the artist's life and work. Latham saw the artist as holding up a mirror to society: an individual whose dissent from the norm could lead to a profound reconfiguration of reality as we know it.Latham has been associated with several national and international artistic movements, including the first phase of conceptual art in the 1960s. He was an important contributor to the Destruction in Art Symposium of 1966, and also a co-founding member of the Artist Placement Group APG (1966-89).The Serpentine Gallery exhibition (and this accompanying catalogue) spans Latham's career to include his iconic spray and roller paintings; his one-second drawings; films such as Erth (1971), and Latham's monumental work, Five Sisters (1976) from his Scottish Office placement with APG.Published on the occasion of the exhibition, A World View: John Latham at Serpentine Gallery, London, 2 March - 21 May 2017.

Book The Book Lover s Publication

Download or read book The Book Lover s Publication written by David Maroto and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is devoted to the phenomenon of the artist novel, and whether it can be considered to be a medium in its own right within the visual arts. Visual artists create different strategies to integrate their novels into their practice. Introducing traits that are particular to narrative literature into the visual arts implies the accentuation of some features over others, such as narration, fiction, identification, and the act of reading and its protracted engagement, as well as distribution in public space. An artist’s approach comes fundamentally from the visual arts. The creation of an artist novel doesn't differ from any other artwork. Both processes feed into each other as they evolve within the same body of works. Thanks to the contributions of a selected group of artists, writers, curators, and scholars this publication strives to demonstrate that literature, when treated by visual artists, can take place well beyond the space of the book.

Book Metamodernism

Download or read book Metamodernism written by Robin van den Akker and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metamodernism: Historicity, Affect, Depth brings together many of the most influential voices in the scholarly and critical debate about post-postmodernism and twenty-first century aesthetics, arts and culture. By relating cutting-edge analyses of contemporary literature, the visual arts and film and television to recent social, technological and economic developments, the volume provides both a map and an itinerary of today’s metamodern cultural landscape. As its organising principle, the book takes Fredric Jameson’s canonical arguments about the waning of historicity, affect and depth in the postmodern culture of western capitalist societies in the twentieth century, and re-evaluates and reconceptualises these notions in a twenty-first century context. In doing so, it shows that the contemporary moment should be regarded as a transitional period from the postmodern and into the metamodern cultural moment.

Book Call Them by Their True Names

Download or read book Call Them by Their True Names written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] call to arms that takes on a range of social and political problems in America—from racism and misogyny to climate change and Donald Trump” (Poets & Writers). National Book Award Longlist Winner of the Kirkus Prize for Nonfiction Winner of the Foreword INDIE Editor’s Choice Prize for Nonfiction Rebecca Solnit is the author of more than twenty books, including the international bestseller Men Explain Things to Me. Called “the voice of the resistance” by the New York Times, she has emerged as an essential guide to our times, through incisive commentary on feminism, violence, ecology, hope, and everything in between. In this powerful and wide-ranging collection of essays, Solnit turns her attention to the war at home. This is a war, she says, “with so many casualties that we should call it by its true name, this war with so many dead by police, by violent ex-husbands and partners and lovers, by people pursuing power and profit at the point of a gun or just shooting first and figuring out who they hit later.” To get to the root of these American crises, she contends that “to acknowledge this state of war is to admit the need for peace,” countering the despair of our age with a dose of solidarity, creativity, and hope. “Solnit’s exquisite essays move between the political and the personal, the intellectual and the earthy.” —Elle “Solnit is careful with her words (she always is) but never so much that she mutes the infuriated spirit that drives these essays.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Solnit [is] a powerful cultural critic: as always, she opts for measured assessment and pragmatism over hype and hysteria.” —Publishers Weekly “Essential reading for anyone living in America today.” —The Brooklyn Rail
