Book Korean Honorifics and Politeness in Second Language Learning

Download or read book Korean Honorifics and Politeness in Second Language Learning written by Lucien Brown and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the ways that advanced speakers of Korean as a second language perceive, use and learn the complexities of the Korean honorifics system. Despite their advanced proficiency in Korean, the study shows that the honorifics use of these speakers diverges in crucial ways from native speaker norms. It is argued that, rather than reflecting the language competence of these speakers as such, this usage is linked to questions of the identity of language learners and foreigners in Korean society. In addition, it shows the influence of conflicting ideologies regarding the meaning of politeness . This argument is backed up by rich data collected through mixed methods (discourse completion tests, role-plays, natural interactions, introspective interviews), allowing for a detailed picture of how the honorifics use of second language speakers emerges in context. The book concludes by discussing the implications of the study for politeness research, interlanguage pragmatics and language pedagogy."

Yideum captures with raw honesty the sense of dread felt by many Korean women during this time as Jeong struggles in a swirl of misguided desires and hopelessness against a society distorted by competing ideologies, sexual violence, and cultural conservatism. Facing this helplessness, her impulse is to escape into the world of art. Blood Sisters is a vivid, powerful portrayal of a woman’s efforts to live an authentic life in the face of injustice.

Book Translanguaging and English as a Lingua Franca in the Plurilingual Classroom

Download or read book Translanguaging and English as a Lingua Franca in the Plurilingual Classroom written by Anna Mendoza and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores multilingual practices such as translanguaging, code-switching and stylization in secondary classrooms in Hawai’i. Using linguistic ethnography, it investigates how students in a linguistically diverse class, including those who speak less commonly taught languages, deal with learning tasks and the social life of the class when using these languages alongside English as a lingua franca. It discusses implications for teachers, from balancing student needs in lesson planning and instruction to classroom management, where the language use of one individual or group can create challenges of understanding, participation or deficit identity positionings for another. The book argues that students must not only be allowed to flex their whole language repertoires to learn and communicate but also be aware of how to build bridges across differences in individual repertoires. It offers suggestions for teachers to consider within their own contexts, highlighting the need for teacher autonomy to cultivate the classroom community’s critical language awareness and create conducive environments for learning. This book will appeal to postgraduate students, researchers and academics working in the fields of sociolinguistics and linguistic ethnography as well as pre-service and in-service teachers in linguistically diverse secondary school contexts.

Book Alpha Male Blast from the Past

Download or read book Alpha Male Blast from the Past written by Isla Chiu and published by Isla Chiu. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My future used to look so promising. I graduated from high school at the top of my class and got into Princeton. But then I flunked out of the Ivy League school. Now I'm prancing around in a skimpy French maid outfit while waiting on sleazy rich guys at Parisian Dream. Ag, more like Parisian Nightmare. I don't think things could get any worse until I find myself waiting on Gerald Holland, my former best friend. And it turns out he's still a little—okay, very—salty about how I rejected him in high school. But though he acts like he hates me, he also acts like he still wants me... WORD COUNT: 7,300 Excerpt: He's treating me like a charity case. If I had a little more pride, I would tell him to take back his money. But I have a stupid amount of student loans to pay off for my one semester of college, so I keep the cash. "What do you do nowadays?" I ask. Gerald definitely had a glow-up after high school. He lost all of his baby fat and now looks like the stereotypical handsome rich guy from a romance novel. Chiseled cheekbones, a strong jaw, and a sleek blond haircut straight out of an expensive salon. His emerald-green eyes are the same though. "I design apps," he says. "I recently sold one to Google for a pretty penny." That explains the custom-tailored suit and Rolex. He grins. "Not bad for someone who had a 2.0 GPA in high school, eh?" "Not bad," I murmur. I should be glad for Gerald—and I am—but his success makes my failure all the more painful. In high school, people expected great things from me and expected nothing from Gerald. Yet I'm a Princeton dropout and he is a Rolex-wearing tech mogul. "I bet you regret rejecting me in high school." I glare at him. "Did you just come here to rub your success in my face?" "That's one reason. The other reason is I had a burning desire to see you in a sexy French maid outfit." He glances at my cleavage and legs, making me blush. "A wet dream come true."

Book excerpt: Hilarie Walsh just wants to lay low during her senior year after being branded the class tramp by her loathsome ex. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't escape the notice of the new kid Eric Lawington, the arrogant but incredibly sexy son of a billionaire who makes the rich heirs and heiresses at her school look middle-class in comparison. At first, she wants nothing to do with him, but Eric is nothing if not persistent and evident sparks fly between them. However, jealousy, the past, and a drama-making twin with a history of wrecking his sibling's happiness threaten their relationship... Excerpt: All the hardness left her face. Her eyes turned wide; her mouth stopped glowering. She looked vulnerable, like she could fall into pieces at any moment. "I don't know if I should be relieved or scared that you've stopped acting like a jerk." "Why should you be scared?" "Most of the time, guys are jerks. When they're being nice, they want something from you or are planning to break your heart." "You're so cynical." "Blame my ex." He untied the knot behind her mask. "How about I help you forget your ex?" "Trying to seduce me?" "Maybe." "Why are these masks so small?" she asked as he took off her mask. "Isn't the point of a masquerade ball to not know who anyone is?" "Not for me. I just wanted to show off my wealth." "You're a douche, but at least you're an honest one." "Unlike your ex?" She lifted the corners of her mouth. "You don't know his name, yet you already somehow know him so well." His mask fell to the bed. "May I kiss you?" "Why not?" she whispered. Closing his eyes, he put his lips on hers. From the way she moaned without pulling away from him, he could tell she enjoyed this. He then left a trail of kisses down her slender white neck, making her sigh in bliss. Christ, even her shoulders are beautiful, he thought as he pulled the straps of her dress down the smooth pale skin. She gasped as his teeth grazed the skin over her collarbone. "Want me to stop?" he breathed against her shoulder. "No," she whispered.
