Book California Community College Faculty

Download or read book California Community College Faculty written by Maria Elena Clinton and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faculty involvement in institutional governance has come to represent the norm within higher educational institutions. Community college faculty members' role in institutional governance has not been the major focus for studies. Currently, faculty members from Liberal Arts (LAC) programs represent about 70 percent of the faculty in California community colleges; they also represent the largest percentage (88) of academic senate presidents. By comparison, approximately 30 percent of Career and Technical Education (CTE) faculty represent only 12 percent of the academic senate presidents in 2012. This study identified and explored the differences between LAC and CTE faculty perceptions of their values and roles regarding their involvement in the academic senate and shared governance process at their institutions. In addition, the study also identified and explored the notable differences and similarities between LAC and CTE disciplined full-time faculty member's perceptions of incentives and disincentives regarding running for Academic Senate president. The qualitative research design was used to interview and study Liberal Arts (LAC) and Career Technical Education (CTE) full-time tenured and tenured-track California community college faculty members at two community colleges located in one Southern California college district. The researcher discovered that the majority of the CTE participants did not feel as though the academic senate or college valued their discipline or discipline expertise. In stark contrast, the majority of LAC participants did believe that the academic senate and college valued their discipline and discipline expertise. The study identified that LAC and CTE participants share more similarities when it comes to the identification and perception of disincentives. Although LAC and CTE participants identified the same incentives, they had differing perceptions of the exact meaning or motivation behind them. More research is needed in this area of study if community colleges want to continue to have faculty from all representative disciplines participate in shared governance at their colleges. If these areas are not thoroughly explored, there will be a continued lack of participation from faculty, especially CTE faculty.

Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. The Dream Is Over tells the extraordinary story of the 1960 Master Plan for Higher Education in California, created by visionary University of California President Clark Kerr and his contemporaries. The Master Plan’s equality of opportunity policy brought college within reach of millions of American families for the first time and fashioned the world’s leading system of public research universities. The California idea became the leading model for higher education across the world and has had great influence in the rapid growth of universities in China and East Asia. Yet, remarkably, the political conditions supporting the California idea in California itself have evaporated. Universal access is faltering, public tuition is rising, the great research universities face new challenges, and educational participation in California, once the national leader, lags far behind. Can the social values embodied in Kerr’s vision be renewed?

Book American Higher Education in Crisis

Download or read book American Higher Education in Crisis written by Goldie Blumenstyk and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American higher education is at a crossroads. Technological innovations and disruptive market forces are buffeting colleges and universities at the very time their financial structure grows increasingly fragile. Disinvestment by states has driven up tuition prices at public colleges, and student debt has reached a startling record-high of one trillion dollars. Cost-minded students and their families--and the public at large--are questioning the worth of a college education, even as study after study shows how important it is to economic and social mobility. And as elite institutions trim financial aid and change other business practices in search of more sustainable business models, racial and economic stratification in American higher education is only growing. In American Higher Education in Crisis?: What Everyone Needs to Know, Goldie Blumenstyk, who has been reporting on higher education trends for 25 years, guides readers through the forces and trends that have brought the education system to this point, and highlights some of the ways they will reshape America's colleges in the years to come. Blumenstyk hones in on debates over the value of post-secondary education, problems of affordability, and concerns about the growing economic divide. Fewer and fewer people can afford the constantly increasing tuition price of college, Blumenstyk shows, and yet college graduates in the United States now earn on average twice as much as those with only a high-school education. She also discusses faculty tenure and growing administrative bureaucracies on campuses; considers new demands for accountability such as those reflected in the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard; and questions how the money chase in big-time college athletics, revelations about colleges falsifying rankings data, and corporate-style presidential salaries have soured public perception. Higher education is facing a serious set of challenges, but solutions have also begun to emerge. Blumenstyk highlights how institutions are responding to the rise of alternative-educational opportunities and the new academic and business models that are appearing, and considers how the Obama administration and public organizations are working to address questions of affordability, diversity, and academic integrity. She addresses some of the advances in technology colleges are employing to attract and retain students; outlines emerging competency-based programs that are reshaping conceptions of a college degree, and offers readers a look at promising innovations that could alter the higher education landscape in the near future. An extremely timely and focused look at this embattled and evolving arena, this primer emphasizes how open-ended the conversation about higher education's future remains, and illuminates how big the stakes are for students, colleges, and the nation.
