Merriam Prize (2003) Salsa is a popular dance music developed by Puerto Ricans in New York City during the 1960s and 70s, based on Afro-Cuban forms. By the 1980s, the Colombian metropolis of Cali emerged on the global stage as an important center for salsa consumption and performance. Despite their geographic distance from the Caribbean and from Hispanic Caribbean migrants in New York City, Caleños (people from Cali) claim unity with Cubans, Puerto Ricans and New York Latinos by virtue of their having adopted salsa as their own. The City of Musical Memory explores this local adoption of salsa and its Afro-Caribbean antecedents in relation to national and regional musical styles, shedding light on salsa's spread to other Latin American cities. Cali's case disputes the prevalent academic notion that live music is more "real" or "authentic" than its recorded versions, since in this city salsa recordings were until recently much more important than musicians themselves, and continued to be influential in the live scene. This book makes valuable contributions to ongoing discussions about the place of technology in music culture and the complex negotiations of local and transnational cultural identities.

The Ford Foundation endorsed this alliance between the universities of the region to provide scientific and technical support to social inclusion projects aimed at generating equity. The financial resources provided by the Ford Foundation and the time allocated by the professors and researchers of the Universidad Autónoma, Universidad ICESI, Universidad de San Buenaventura-Cali and Universidad del Valle made this research and its publication in a book possible. This book discusses different theoretical guidelines used in the definition of a region, considered useful as analytical references for the empirical proposal in this book about the 28 municipalities in northern Cauca and southern Valle. Its six chapters describe the patterns of territory occupation, the socio-demographic characterization of the municipalities of the extended city-region, the region's economic structure components, the labor market imbalances, the analysis of the political-electoral heterogeneity of the urban agglomeration of Cali, and some conclusions and policy recommendations. Hence, based on a conceptual and methodological model, the empirical analysis furthered in this book indicates that Cali, as the main urban center, should include in its development plans and territorial planning more effective measures to know, assess, and plan—together with the neighboring municipalities, not only those of the department of Valle itself but those of the urban-rural periphery or hinterland of the southwest, which includes the municipalities of southern Valle and northern Cauca—, albeit through less asymmetrical relations and more shared associations to face a set of common problems that affect the entire region whose epicenter is Cali.

Drawing on an example from Cali, Colombia, Hentschel describes a tool for such policy formulation at the local level - a rapid city household survey. Although the survey uses pre-coded and closed- ended questions, it is contextual in the sense that it is tailor-made to social and economic conditions in Cali. The survey places particular emphasis on collecting key quantitative information, such as household welfare and service access, as well as qualitative information, such as service evaluations and population priorities. Combining the quantitative and qualitative data allows, for example, the mapping of population budget priorities or service satisfaction levels by welfare group. Rapid city household surveys could provide an important tool for the development of local social policies.
