Book The Treasure of the San Jos

Download or read book The Treasure of the San Jos written by Carla Rahn Phillips and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-07-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2007 Award for Excellence in World History and Biography/Autobiography, Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers Sunk in a British ambush in 1708, the Spanish galleon San José was rumored to have one of the richest cargos ever lost at sea. Though treasure hunters have searched for the wreck's legendary bounty, no one knows exactly how much went down with the ship or exactly where it sank. Here, Carla Rahn Phillips confronts the legend of lost treasure with documentary records of the San José's final voyage and suggests that the loss of silver and gold en route to Spain paled in comparison to the loss of the six hundred men who went down with the ship. Drawing from rich archival records, Phillips presents a biography of the ship and its crew. With vivid detail and meticulous scholarship, the author tells the stories of the officers, sailors, apprentices, and pages who manned the ship and explains the historical context in which the San José became prey to the British squadron. But the story does not end with the sinking of the San José. While Phillips addresses the persistent question of how much treasure was on board when the ship went down, she focuses on the human dimensions of the tragedy as well. She recovers the accounts of British naval officers involved in the battle, and examines the impact of the ship's loss on the Spanish government, the survivors, and the families of the men who perished. Original, comprehensive, and compelling, The Treasure of the San José separates popular myth from history and sheds light on the human lives associated with a "treasure" ship.

Book The Placentia Area A Changing Mosaic

Download or read book The Placentia Area A Changing Mosaic written by Lee K.M. Everts and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-02-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touching on the wide array of people and events who have brought life to the history of the Placentia area, The Placentia Area - A Changing Mosaic offers a glimpse of the deep history that has transformed this part of Newfoundland and Labrador. The history is a collection of interconnected stories. Geological processes forged a landscape that would feature in later actions and activities. Geology created a wide expansive beach that Basque fish harvesters discovered was perfect for drying fish. This attribute, along with its deep harbour, then ensured that Placentia would go on to function in the struggles between the French and English. And from this period, the Placentia area has evolved, playing a role in the lives of well-known characters such as Pierre le Moyne d'Iberville or Roger F. Sweetman, as well as the less known, yet equally important, women and men who simply came to make a life for themselves. To the present day, the latter has remained a defining quality of the region.

Book Early Bourbon Spanish America

Download or read book Early Bourbon Spanish America written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years between the accession of the house of Bourbon to the Spanish throne in 1700 and the coronation of Carlos III in 1759 have often been bundled up, and dismissed, together with the later years of Habsburg rule. Growing out of the first Anglophone academic workshop to focus exclusively on Early Bourbon Spanish America, this collective volume gives prominence to the first half of the eighteenth century as a distinct historical period. Discussing from different methodological and geographical perspectives the ways in which the Bourbon succession, international competition over access to Spanish American resources, and war affected the Indies, the contributors examine some of the key changes experienced in Spanish America at the local, provincial and imperial level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996, this encyclopedia is a comprehensive reference resource that pulls together a vast amount of material on a rich historical era, presenting it in a balanced way that offers hard-to-find facts and detailed information. The volume was the first encyclopedic account of the United States' colonial military experience. It features 650 essays by more than 130 historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, geographers, and other scholarly experts on a variety of topics that cover all of colonial America's diverse peoples. In addition to wars, battles, and treaties, analytical essays explore the diplomatic and military history of over 50 Native American groups, as well as Dutch, English, French, Spanish, and Swiss colonies. It's the first source to consult for the political activities of an Indian nation, the details about the disposition of forces in a battle, or the significance of a fort to its size, location, and strength. In addition to its reference capabilities, the book's detailed material has been, and will continue to be highly useful to students as a supplementary text and as a handy source for reporters and papers.
